I have the same feeling, something is really off with this game. There is no flow, not in the main story and not in the side stories (especially the romance). Sometimes the transitions are so sudden, I feel like I missed a couple of missions. The game does not feel like a beta or some half-assed effort, far from it, but there is definitely something not right here. |
I too have this feeling. Things for some reason don't feel fluid. But I am loving it.

JC2 uses Avalanche Engine 2. Sleeping Dogs uses a propriety engine built by United Front Games.

For example, when you have to go and steal cars for a guy... he just appears in your missions as far as i can see, there is no introduction or reason why, its just there. or am i wrong?

He should have been the first vehicle seller you encountered as part of a story mission and will mention that he's interested in working with you, then you get his contact info and can do those random missions for cash.

Yeah, or the guys from "your crew" that you find during the murder/organ trade investigation, they were never introduced, so while Wei is like "oh no, Victor" etc, I'm like- "why should I care, I never knew these guys".

The wedding was the point where gaps in the story between missions really started to kick in. "Hey Wei, drive my fiancée around to pick up crap for our wedding tomorrow which you've totally known about this entire time, despite none of us ever mentioning it before".

i get really clean ones some times, and other times i get blown out ones like the screens you posted. so far i have seen the same shadows outside on all the cars and people too, but it was only in the morning (and they were much chunkier than the ones from inside the building, but i didnt think to take a screenshot). im pretty sure i have never seen them at night yet. ill start paying more attention now, but i just did a quick test and i didnt get them from car headlights, street lights, shop signs or any other light source at night. i have only played for about 40 minutes so far though (and another 10-15 running around looking at shadows right now lol).

Characters introduced from here and there so randomly and it's especially jarring if you've played GTA4/EFLC where each and
every character was introduced through a mission/cutscene etc. Is the game really supposed to be like that or is this some bug?
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Fucking sucks that they didn't do night shadows properly (prolly because the engine couldn't handle so many light sources... )
But during the day they indeed are there:
One thing that annoys me tho is the horrible SSAO quality..

To be fair, has any game ever handled dynamic shadows from multiple light sources beyond a few? It's a console port - we should thank the gaming gods that it is as good as it is.

That's just how it is. My feeling is it's a consequence of designing all the set pieces first then hashing a story around them, rather than starting with a flowing narrative and building missions from that.

yeah it would have been nice to see something at night too. i imagine they had a good reason for scaling them back though (they had to do it on purpose/for a reason of some kind). if not performance, then it might have just looked like hell with the shadows from all the headlights and all the other shit all at once.

Doom3. Actually if you put several light sources (with 1/(light sources).count intensity), in a grid that reassembles the light sources size & appearance, you'll achieve realistic light diffusion, though your frame rate will most probably suck @ 16 light sources
What Doom3 missed was some real time global illumination, like crysis has it now. But at that time that wouldn't have run on any GFX card fluidly I guess...

Fair enough, but then Doom 3 was arguably primarily built around lighting, given that the whole gimmick was running around in the dark with a flashlight. But even so, 16 light sources is nothing. Take a real world example of one of Sleeping Dog's night scenes (or any other modern city open world game for that matter) and count the number of light sources. Depending on how "dense" the area is, there could be hundreds. No game has ever approached anything like that.

GTA4 has dynamic shadows on everything, also during night.
All source engine games have multiple lightsources with dynamic shadows.
Cryengine games.
Think even UE3.5 games...

not
take TF2 for example, you get the same character shadow no matter where you are, inside, outside, on a roof, in a cellar, under water and whatnot. that's hardy a "dynamic" shadow. |
Ok lemme rephrase that for the simple mind.
All source engine games CAN have multiple lightsources with dynamic shadows from them.

The more I play this game I realize why GTAIV is really a better game IMO.
This game has some really fun moments, but the plot of GTAIV was so much better. The physics as well just made for some fun. I've been really let down by the car destruction physics in this game. In GTAIV all sorts of shit flys off a car as you beat it to shit. In this game you just get changing damage textures, but nothing really flys off.
Running into people shows you really how bad the physics are in this game as well. In GTAIV it is fairly satisfying running someone over and seeing what the dead body does. Not so much in this game. The bodies sort of slide around like sticks, and generally don't have much going on.
So it's a good game, but I don't think it tops GTAIV (And Gay Tony DLC in particular).
