software firewalls are useless you noobz

That's true only if you are the type of person who knows better than to open attachments from emails, click Yes to popups in IE, etc. And also assumes that you never let anyone else use your computer. I have a secondary business cleaning up spyware and viruses from people's machines and almost always the problem comes from young kids who love to click Yes/OK to installing junk like that.

Eh what does viruses have to do with firewalls? As if there is a open worm for an exploit thas no patch yet out all you live on is luck-

I was talking more about trojans/keylogger type programs which a software firewall is actually useful in catching. A hardware firewall doesn't care about connections initiated from inside the network, since most people do not configure their home networks to block any outgoing ports (which isn't foolproof anyway, since the program could use port 80, 443, 25, 21, 6667, etc. which would be guaranteed open for outbound traffic on almost any firewall).

If you're confident you can avoid getting such things installed on your machine, then you do not need a software firewall.
