You just use OpenVPN to unlock it the first time, and after that you don't need it again.
So yes, it would help if you want to play now.

Well, the difficult Ubisoft DRM is also cracked (apart from two games or so?) so I don't think it will take the Scene (or others) that long to crack this. If it was really hard to crack then someone would've reported about it by now

Just give it a few days / weeks, since its something new the first time always takes much longer then everything after. since cracking a new protection gives them bragging rights they will do all they can to get it done.
