I haven't tried win 8 yet, but metro doesn't seem that bad to me. I like to keep my desktop clean so having a full screen with a bunch of icons pop up when I want to start something is preferable to having them cluttering my desktop when needed or not.

Start menu is too slow as it takes too many clicks to reach what you want, unless you're lucky to find it in the commonly used list, or pin it there (but very limited space).
Taskbar has limited space and I only prefer to keep constantly running apps there.
I use 3rd party dock bar with similar functionality anyway (not full-screen, but I don't think it matters - not like I can look at two places at once while searching for the icon to click)

I plan on using it just like a desktop on demand. Essentially similar to show desktop button in Win 7, which was a failure and i never use it because it too often fails to restore apps properly (and obviously because i want my desktop to be clean). Although first thing I'll do in Win 8 is to reduce the size of those tiles as much as possible.

You'll probably get a lot of use out of it Bearish, but you will need to keep on top of the menu as everything you install gets added as an icon. It gets cluttered very quickly.

OR just stick sticky notes all over your monitor with arrows draw on them pointing to the icons on your desktop, same look Smile

lolwut?

@sYn

I would think they had something similar to "Add desktop shortcut" when installing a program, but hardly a big deal.

Indeed, the "add shortcut to start menu" is the action that causes the creation of the icon. I tend to just untick that. If you then want to find installed applications you just use the search function (just start typing with metro open).

I assume in time we'll start to see more live tiles, which should make metro far more useful.

Hopefully they've fixed the few remaining issues with multi-monitor setups :\. Guess we'll find out tomorrow!

Leo, you're testing win 8 after all? good, you'll be assimilated! Very Happy

Edit: that's strange, I have UAC disabled and as far as I can see there are no problems. Confused

You don't have it disabled, you have the UAC notifications disabled. To disable in Windows 8, you have to edit registry.

Well, that's the problem, UAC can't be disabled completely. Neutral

Yes, you're right. I've tried the registry hack now and there are problems, same as you have. Embarassed

More pathetic shit. I put the taskbar on the right, as I am used to work, but surprise surprise, start is still on the lower left corner Not only that, but the charms shit also doesn't allow me to work properly with the taskbar because moving the mouse from top lower opens charms shit So I move the taskbar to the left; now if I have Metro shit running, it disturbs my taskbar work

Clearly Microsoft gave this shit a lot of development and QA time. / 10

I've only tried it after the patches (on the derptop), and it was indeed pretty good. Smile On the home PC I've had XP until February 2010, epic OS was epic. Laughing

If you had the hardware, you mean...

Ran worse than XP and 7 on my laptop, not much MUCH worse but still pretty damn noticeable.

Oh and I'm not talking about it as a bloated-out-of-the-box laptop OS (if you ever bought a laptop you'll know what I mean).
Even with a clean install it was slower than those other two.

Clean install of Vista on a 1GB RAM was a little slow, but with 2GB it was really unnoticeable and difference was subtle. It was still much better than XP.

I was running it on a 3GB DDR2 machine and you noticed it on startup, shutdown and especially when switching/launching multiple programs.

Not a huge difference, but why bother when XP was much faster and really didn't give any trouble?
Of course that was the RTM version IIRC, and it's not that fair to compare it to RTM Win 7 but still...
