No. It wasn't. It's OK at best due to the SFX at the time, and the funny commercials like he tends to do in all his films. But generally, it's a shit film. |
No, it's a work of fucking genius. Only Verhoeven could have taken a well-loved sci-fi novel and made a film that satirises its source material's central philosophy. Not to mention the the eerily prophetic parallels that can be drawn between the film and last 10 years of US foreign policy. Add to that the still unmatched CGI, Basil Poledouris' bombastic score and Neil Patrick Harris in a Nazi uniform.
You're not looking hard enough. |
I don't like to stare at shit.

Yea, but it is being made by the same guy behind Appleseed, which I for one enjoyed.

Wouldn't call this a remake, first one was a movie this is animation. Now if someone did the same thing with Avatar people wouldn't even notice the difference.

Really? I mean fucking REALLY? A sequel to one of my all time favorite classics given to a motherfucker named Appleseed |
...whut?
Not sure if serious or brain damage.
Also, starship troopers was an anime waaaaaaayyyyy before verhoeven made his film, ssure it sucked, but if you're going to call out mediums, anime had it before live action did.

resurrection just in case someone feels they want to 'discuss' the cgi movie (because it really doesnt warrant its own topic)... which i doubt, given that its pretty dumb. not bad as a fun generic cgi action film though. lacks any real depth or 'fuck yeah' sequences to be great though.

typical shitty japanese style writing/characters... cheesy as hell (you know how japs are).. but once you get past the typical adolescent immature fascination with tits (not complaining, mind, but i do find it silly and a waste of time in an action film) and sex, and when the mission actually starts... eh.. its actually a pretty decent time-waster. its not deep like battleship was, and its nothing really standout or overly satisfying, but as a dumb timewaster cgi action film... yeah id watch it again, and i look forward to the 1080.
obviously it doesnt match up to the original, but as long as you watch it as a generic sci-fi cgi action film, you'll probably enjoy it. it was definately better than st3 thats for sure. the cgi wasnt too bad either. its nice to see another full cgi film again, that isnt a hollywood family film. its been ages.
and it was quite nice to see that the film wasnt TOO wimpy when it came to depicting deaths - which it definately does - but an opportunity was definately missed to go quite dark and gory.
Id basically sum it up as a massive missed opportunity, but it could have been a hell of a lot worse. its jap cgi - you should know what to expect
ima rate it 6.5/10 (or maybe a 6... its around that region) not memorable, but not terrible - had some nice action sequences, and at times it bordered on creating a tense scenario. kinda wish it had stuck to being an 'isolated group on a big ship vs aliens' type of story though... it really was at its best between boarding the ship and hitting the wormhole (not a spoiler). |
