You misunderstood what I meant with the word simplicity.
Since they are going to release Mac and Linux OpenGL versions of their games day 1, along with the Windows/DirectX version.. why not scrap the DirectX Windows version? You are saying OpenGL requires more effort.. but they have already decided to put the effort in the first place when they announced Mac will be considered a tier 1 platform, 2 years ago.

Quote: | We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. |
(And I'm sure they'll make the same promise for linux as well, eventually).
Of course a D3D-ish version will always be made for the the 360, but then again a GL-ish version will also be made for the PS3, and to be honest the PC remains their lead platform, so it's not very relevant whether they use D3D for the 360.
Quote: | This article compare a DirectX9 game. Microsoft improved performance a lot with D3D10/11 so already the article tests are void. |
Very good point! Didn't think of that. However it doesn't make it any less impressive that the immature GL/Linux version runs better.
Quote: | D3D10/11 also allow for many features set that you won't see in OpenGL. |
And vice versa. nvidia's FXAA/TXAA's creator Lottes points out some GL extentions that offer functionality that's not present in D3D. http://timothylottes.blogspot.gr/2012/08/gl-faster-than-dx-and-linux-faster-than.html
Dunge wrote: | Plus, people saying "Yaii every games will run on Linux and it will be better and faster" they forget that barely no commercial game support OpenGL anyway. Source engine is an exception. |
Valve is making a start.. | Not really, it only says that they finally spent some time on optimizing OpenGL, I will easily bet 1000€ that if they look into their DirectX render and also have all the NVIDIA/AMD guys there that the DirectX performs much better. DirectX is also much easier to use than OpenGL (own experience). OpenGL isn't bad but DirectX is just better (mainly because of the support from Microsoft), only downside that you might call is the dependency on Microsoft products, but that's not such an issue really.

Did steam broke the "copy files to game folder" install method on this last update?
Was just trying to install stalker cs that way, but I noticed that steam doesn't create the game folder inside the common folder.
Instead it creates a steamID folder (25010 in this case) inside the downloading folder and downloads the game into that one. Trying to overwrite it with the game content from a disc is useless since it's progress seems to be tied with a couple of state_steamID.patch files.
Deleting those and asking steam to verify the files also does shit.

How about, downloading? Or is there no proper internet in the shithole or Europe?
PC: Yes. Console: No.

Copying the files is still going to be faster if you have them already.
In any case, it seems to download like it used to for me. Maybe it depends on the game?

Tried moving files to game folder, install and it started discovering and installing the game properly

Nice move Valve but Europe ain't America |
They're just doing it to cover their asses. I'm sure if you're having a huge issue with a game they'll still refund it. I bought Alice Madness Returns during the sale, they certainly didn't have to refund me but I never once was able to get the game running due to EA's DRM and they refunded me for it.

Yeah... Everyone's getting antsy about the new ToS and "What If'ing" about refunds and the like. But it's Valve. They've not done anything particularly evil in the past, so chances are good they won't anytime soon. The only thing they're really worring about is Win8's Metro store, and that just means they're going to really start pushing how much better value they are compared to other companies.

I have very high hopes for the Source 2, the good old updated Source still holds pretty damn well even after all these years. I hope I'll be able to see it in action before I get old

Source 2 + Half Life 3. Only logical explanation as to why the hell is it taking them 5 years now to make new HL game.

Steam Expands Beyond Games
http://store.steampowered.com/news/8584/
Quote: | Aug 8, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.
The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.
More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.
"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests." |

the "derp' thing is overused, remember, people whined how Steam "sucks" at early days, now people prefer it at most alternatives serivices when it comes to games.

Plus, steam having a competitor up to the job can only be good for all of us.
