I think imaginative minds are more likely to find cartoonish females sexy than other people. Characters become more alive in the imaginative mind. Same reason why imaginative people tend to be more sensitive to a lot of things in life whether it's perceived illnesses or flying on a plane etc.

Really good point you bring up here Frant. There is something else as well. It's much safer to feel love for an animated character. Real girls will hurt you, the animated ones can be loved from a safe distance. Imagination and sensitivity perhaps go hand in hand, and there is the fear to be rejected.
Personally as teenager I felt in love with girls at a distance. I never told them I had feelings for them. Which is btw a bad approach. You should just try to socialise with a girl and covertly show some interest and see where it goes. But these girls noticed my interest anyway, lol.
I guess many Japanese male teenagers have autistic traits by bad parenting. The fertility rate in Japan is 1.2 at the moment. Their culture is going to extinct if this goes on. And my guess television shows like One Piece and many other anime series do not help either.
