Select a fleet when out of combat and click the tab "battle actions" (on the right next to the fleet), there you can read all the possible cards you can use in battle.

Thanks. It helped me a ton. I finally managed to win couple of battles.

What about cheating human opponents? Very Happy

That's one of the reasons why I hardly play any multiplayer game. Sad

Retrofitting ships is VERY cheap and instant, ships only lose remaining movement points. So, with money at reserv it's very easy to counter enemy ships.

After missile spam ships, I switch to equal beam, missile, shields and flak plus twice less kinetic and deflect e.g. M: 4 B: 4 K: 2 F: 4 S: 4 D: 2

Playing as Empire on normal, only bad cards and leveled up hero causes severe loses, with heroes such fleets become almost invincible Very Happy

Best starting strategy for me being land grab as much as possible, hold for as long as possible, build economy and field two Commander / Pilot heroes and one Administrator hero at capital.

Its possible to retrofit ships??? lol, I feel like an idiot now.

And yea, that almost the same ratio that I play with on regular ships. I'm even shorter kinetic. I had bad experience in my first game when I put all weapons research in kinetics and AI destroyed me with missile builds. Now rockets/beams and some low amount of kinetics are all that I use. Combat really is not a problem for me, I usually fail later when I start having problems with population happiness and AI outproducing me. I still haven't found the right planet development path.

Just started with the game and always curious how many cheating benefits the AI gets with each difficulty grade.
I've downloaded XML archives from the official forum to check some data. It's only from the old 0.51.2 version but shouldn't differ too much from 1.05 maybe:

http://forums.amplitude-studios.com/showthread.php?6813-all-your-xml-are-belong-to-us

As you can read in GameDifficultyDescriptors.xml, the Easy2/Newbie diff is the only one where the AI hardly gets any benefits beside the little approval bonus.
I guess the combination of ShipCostBonus of 20% and BuyOutBonus of 30% on Normal diff already makes it easy for the AI to spam new ships quickly.

If you want really good AI that does not cheat and can compete with the player you probably need an extra CPU just for the AI. Just look at how long the turns in later stages of a game take in Civ5 or Total War games and imagine how long it would take for an even more complex AI.

Cheating AI is a staple for 4X games, I don't know what people expect, lol. We're not a stage yet where the AI can actually be Artificial INTELLIGENCE.

It's more about how far we perceive the AI is cheating. If it's too evident it' can be very frustrating.
I'm not speaking about this game, I haven't played it. I'm speaking in general terms.

well, the AI feels like it has pretty randomized behaviour with some necessary boni to make it challenging. same as all 4x games in the end.
what annoys me though, is that it seems to spit out 4000+ power rating fleets every turn when you corner it in a system.
it feels like playing risk (the board game) and trying to occupy australia.

I think I'm shelving it for the moment. Although I love game design (much more than Gal Civ), the AI is just over the top. Its dumb, it cheats and has insane advantages. It really isn't fun playing against it because all games go the same way. Quick rush on nearest AI so I can compete with their expansion advantages, try to stabilize for couple of turns, then turn on the next one. It quite impossible to outproduce and expand past AI using peaceful means, so one must constantly use war as means of acquiring planets.

Playing on Newbie diff is fine enough. Had about 6k score, while the seven other AIs started with 3k downwards. I quit the session because I’m going to start with a smaller large map and a Disc-4 galaxy this time instead of the boring huge Spiral-8.
A proper challenge should already be Easy diff. Just don’t get fooled by the difficulty names. They are just for mocking players.

What I noticed during my first match:
- Pirates are definitely too powerful and need tweaking. I recommend playing without them at first, because they can also cripple the AI players later. As example in my first session: formed an alliance with the Sophon AI and saw that each of its systems was occupied and currently invaded by one or two pirate fleets. Sick!
- Admin hero at beginning is a must because they are so hilariously powerful with their straight food, production and approval bonuses later
- Spiral-X galaxies isolate you too much from each other. This is not really much fun to expand and interact with other factions.

According to some test starts with Amoeba and their omniscient trait, the Disc-4 galaxy seems most interesting with more alternative lanes to each other. Should be much harder on Normal+ diff maybe, but let’s see how it goes on Easy diff at first.

By the way, the first hex-edited mod has already been released. In time, especially with upcoming mod tools, there will be soon balance and tweak mods that will hopefully fix all frustration.

Nah, this russian update looks too strange to me. I better don't install it over my skidrow.

Maybe JBeckman can provide some updated files, please? I'm especially interested in the sharedassets17.assets file, because the most important game stats are stored there for modding. That could already work with the 1.0.5 exe.
According to the official forum, there is already a 1.0.9 version:

I've been watching this one for a few months. It's a RTS/TBS mix.

Hi,
I was wrong. Russian patch does work without issue.

The reason it didn't worked for me first time, was because I applied patch to empty folder (was curious what was updated) and then copied its contents to game folder.

If installed this way, patch will not trigger its diff patching component that updates big files in the game (among others, it patches resources.assets that is 1.3GB is size).

So after applied properly, patch worked, as well as later 1.09 patch (that needs to be applied afterwards).

P.S.
Crack from patch is optional. Skidrow cracks works too.

Thanks for the kamikaze test!
I risked it too now and it seems to work with skidrow. Retreat takes one round longer and new Sheredyn portrait present.
I forgot to replace the modified sharedassets17.assets file with the vanilla one what caused a mismatch error during the 1.0.8 update but thankfully, the 1.0.9 later included that file again.

Updates endorsed. Long lives communism!

No big deal. You will still evade the missiles that would arrive in round 3.
