(...) such a great 'story' (which is laughable, compared to actual great stories) (...)
Different opinions are one thing but here you show that you, sir, are an ignorant. You can bash the gameplay element all you want but there is no denying that the devs did a great job in using Heart of Darkness as the foundation and giving it a twist. I hope by "actual great stories" you don't mean Max Payne 3 as a recent example. Guess you never read a book in your life and obviously only play games for the playing part, hitting esc/enter/space whenever a cutscene pops up.
Finished the game, saw the plot "twist" from a thousand miles away.
I hated how the game actually blocked you from different choices, ie when you're supposed to use the white phosphorus on the military camp. I actually started shooting them instead (because I thought it was a valid choice, considering that Lugo opposed) , only to find that the enemies respawn indefinitely and shoot you almost instantly with perfect accuracy and increased damage.
I'm with Interinactive on this one, a decent story(and ONLY story) does not make a good game. Even Prince of Persia: Sands of Time had better story, and it was a fucking action/adventure game with no focus on the story at all.
When your marketing is only based around a story and "significant choices" (pffffff ), and that the overall plot emphasises the value of human life all the while you shoot 10,000 guys in the face with no remorse, then you're doing it wrong.
Also Interinactive actually bought the game, so he has legal right to complain. Which cannot be said for hfric, who just burns everything and then complains about people complaining.
I just finished this. Just like many people here, I loved the story. Dark and depressing. It contains several similarities with Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness, and that only made me like it more.
About the gameplay, nothing new. It starts very boring in the first few chapters, but gets a little better later on. The game mechanics were kinda fucked up and that could be annoying in some parts.
Graphics were current generation for the most part, nothing impressive and the presentation was excellent imo. Also, quality voice acting.
Made it to "The Pit."
I like this game so far. Sure, the hard difficulty is a bit of a grind at times, but the story seems to be legit.
The beginning of "The Pit" shows why I don't like games designed for consoles. Too damn clunky to do some killing in that cramped space.
@Interinactive or Neon: care to write a (little) review about it? You guys basicly already have already 50% done and I or you can make a video review out of it.
Don't need to hear anymore...at this point it is a 60/40 split of good too bad....I have been playing up to chapter 4....not much good out now anyway...grab this game ( when on sale)
Just started playing it. I am maybe an hour in and I like it
I see the ambition and story is getting very interesting.
First of all the graphics arent that terrible some were saying. Rough around the edges but they feel sharp even tho textures aren't A.

I tried playing but, as per usual, I get bizarre performance issues It runs locked 60... until there's any sand/dust on the screen, where it plummets down to the 40s. Woohoo.

The dust effects are pretty demanding, I noticed that during the first (prologue) level in the demo, I guess it's impossible to counter outside of better hardware.
(This particular UE3 build uses a really high quality preset as well, though I doubt tweaks will improve performance of that particular effect.)
(That and the game does have some optimization issues as I think was shown in various reviews and performance comparisons or something like that, think it was posted earlier.)
Finished today.
Fantastic game. Really deep, with multiple endings above average for sure. I would categorize it near binary domain. Maybe a little inch lower.
I don't agree wholly with above review.
It think that graphics were good enough(loooong development can be seen especially on some models) and the gameplay was actually good and fun. The game is short enough, that it did not started to be too repetitive.
Of course it is a cover shooter. What? Would You like trained military man run around like warhammer space marines? Using cover is essential in any real shootouts. You die fast and enemies die even faster. I have no idea why everyone is so negative about cover in games. Wouldn't You hide behind cover of people were shooting at you ?
The feel of shooting is really WEAK and gunshots sounds kinda bad but I liked how fragile everyone feels. Enemies die from 1 headshot.
Sand mechanics weren't plentiful but I liked sandstorms and other "sand situations". The game had some near jaw dropping moments but nothing really too stunning action wise.
So while game played well, it might not have been either fantastic but nowhere to put in medicore/average category either imo.
Offcourse the atmosphere and story takes the cake here. Characters are very well drawn and plot is just engaging from first moments. Defy much more ambitious than most games. Something on Brother in Arms level I would say. Well worth experiencing.
Now about the FULL price. Almost NONE game is worth full price these days. paying 50/60usd for a less than 10h singleplayer experience is never a good thing. But that is the reality. Even shorter games costs as much
I would give it solid 8/10. Wait for the price drop or sale and get it. 40$ is alright

That's interesting. My scores are pretty consistent. I don't have a 10/10 game, my highest rated title would be the original Half-Life (9.9). Going down from there I start rating the rest of the games I've played and will play, for example, Deus Ex is a 9.5, Witcher 2 is a 9, etc.
If I rate a game less than 8/10 then it means there's very little to no chance that I will replay it. Examples would be Duke Nukem Forever (I rated it 7.5) and Rage (I think it was 6 or 6.5). Every game I rated 8 or higher has a real chance to be replayed, but that's also dependant on time available of course.
So for me scores aren't pointless as long as I use them as a reference for how I liked a game or not. But they're effectively useless for comparisons to other people's ratings, in my opinion.
Scoring is totally pointless. There is no way of comparing 8/10 linear game to let's say 9/10 skyrim
That's only 1 point! but looks how much more skyrim offers right ?
The score is biased only on game being reviewed. It shows the quality of product but without direct comparison. And it's all personal so...
Actualyl Jeff gerstmann have fantastic opinion on scoring in one of his jar videos on giantbomb. He explained that they included x/5 review scores only for purposes of metacritic etc and explained that scoring is totally pointless and that he have enough of emails complaining about... "You gave that game 3 stars while worse game got 4 stars!"
Angry Joe... no matter how derp he is, have very good scores. When he gives 7/10 it means something.

It doesn't matter how much more Skyrim offers. For instance, Half-Life (a game categorized as linear) was for me a much superior experience to the nearly 200 hours I've put into Skyrim.
Imo, the actual reason scores could be considered pointless is that not everyone's taste in games are the same.
