The story alone is what stands out to be so great. The subtle choices, which are not in your absolute face and the sheer terror of what conflict and war can do to a man is what sets this apart from the rest of the shooters. However, the mechanics are really...I don't know, basic. However, as I said earlier, it redeems itself with the story.

I love how we pirates bitch about a game when we didn't pay for it.
Nothing wrong with that mind you but it just makes me chuckle at the irony.
You guys do make my day every once in awhile.....thanks.

If the story is as good as many people are saying here I might give it a go afterall. The gameplay does look boring but a good enough story can sort of make up for that sometimes imo.

At chapter 8 or so now, that scene there was really nice, kinda like bacon sort-of.
Spoiler: | |
(Good portrayal of the war-zone and chaos going on in the setting they've created for this game, sometimes the choices you do will have unintended consequences, nicely captured here and in some other areas of the game, wonder how it'll continue from here.)
Spoiler: |
Brilliant set up as well, kill that spotter whom is just one soldier of many others you've fought thus far and then seeing the area below is full of soldiers, realize there is a mortar nearby and deciding to actually use it despite complaints from your squad not to and knowing it means using said white phosphor you encountered earlier and saw the effects of and then shooting up a camera drone first thus switching the view to a very neutral black and white spectrum so you just shoot the moving targets and follow the camera then leaving the area and going down when everything stops moving and then seeing just what you've accomplished in this rather brutal act, impressive set-up.

I'm on Chapter 14 right now and this is one of the most depressing games I've played this year.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

I'll let you know if they were right or not.

I see ixi is enjoyng cover shooters more and more. First Binary Domain and now this.
Weren't you sworn enemy of such games? |
I still am and will always be . The cover system has ruined the whole genre, except for some extremely rare cases such as Mr. Payne where it was well integrated and "optional" .
Haven't tried this one (the iso demo) yet , but the 'official' short demo left me completely unimpressed so boring it was. I might check it out just for the story, which should be decent after all, still unsure though.
As for Binary Domain, well it was quite a generic cover shooter too gameplay-wise, but the story/characters/huge bosses definitely made up for it

The gameplay has been seen many times and done to death but like Binary Domain, it is the story which saves the game. I haven't
played such a depressing game in a long long time and everything only grows from bad to worse. Hell even the loading screens mock you near the end of the game.
Playing the game is totally worth it for the haunting final chapter.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

What a shame this game is. I didn't want to believe it, but it seems the "naaarrrraaaatiiiveeeee" is indeed that good. But it is wrapped up in such generic shooter crap that it really is a test on your patience and your ability to deepthroat+swallow for some dubiously nice story that pops from time to time but is for the most part hidden under cover (part of the cover shooting mechanics? ).
What a shame.

The campaign was so short and had story moments filled throughout that it never felt the way that you described it (which is quite disturbing I might add )
1 and 2 are still amazing.

@yuri I am really angry with this game. These are the most frustrating games - they have a good core, but are surrounded by layers of ugly.

I don't know what kind of games you guys actually play if this is 'crap' or 'ugly'. The graphics are okay, not amazing but good enough. Gameplay is very basic 3rd person shooting with no additional gimmicks but it's not bad like some might say. Just not unique in anyway.
The story is certainly where this game shines, there are many situations in the game where things can get pretty fucked up and there's actually a few moments where you can choose what to do and the game changes a little bit according to that. Multiple endings is always nice too.
Multiplayer feels a bit tacked on, it's developed by another studio and has the same problems with the singleplayer. It's very basic, simple and uninspiring, following the Call of Duty-design with the perks and the weapon unlocks and whatnot.
It's not really bad but it's a lot of unused potential. I will probably play some of the multiplayer with my friends these next few days and then just move on to other games but I would say the game was worth the 28€ I paid for it. Not a bad game but a solid, fun shooter that could have been great instead of just 'good'.

I hate you, guys. You've made me check this closer and now i can't leave it alone. Story and atmosphere are great...
As for the generic shooter, i can live with it, because of the aforementioned elements (though if they've put some better gameplay, this would actually be a good game).
The complete Intel list, found after some digging.
Spoiler: | There are a total of 23 Intel Locations spread out over the chapters:
Chapter 1: The Evacuation Intel Locations
Intel Location 1: You will find this "paper map" intel taped on the side of an oil truck, stuck on a board. It's in the area you enter at the beginning of the mission, right around your first firefight when your team mate says "Who the f*ck are these guys?" I recommend looking for it right after you shoot the glass, so the sand pours on top of the enemies, then turn directly around to find the intelligence.
Intel Location 2: You will find this "orange bag" intel on the ground inside of the crashed plane's cargo hold, if you walk below the plane you'll spot it easily enough. It's before you walk up the stairs.
Chapter 2: The Dune Intel Locations
Intel Location 3: You will find this "documents bag with a smiley face emblem" intel on a weapons crate below a bright blue umbrella, it's on the lookout pier after you walk past the crashed helicopter. It's quite a view from there!
Intel Location 4: You will find this "videotape" intel on the ground inside of the Dubai TV news network building, it's on the floor next to the cameras in front of the news desk.
Chapter 3: Underneath Intel Locations
Intel Location 5: You will find this "bullet-making tools" intel on the ground. It's after overhearing Castavin, on the side of the room where your team mate asks "Anyone think we should try and talk to those guys again? I mean, we did come here to save them."
Chapter 4: The Refugees Intel Locations
Intel Location 6: You will find this "girl's doll" intel on the ground. When you're in the first underground hallways, it's on the floor of a dead end. It's in the green-hued hallway where your team mate remarks "Ugh! You smell that? Someone's definitely been living down here."
Intel Location 7: You will find this "photos" intel on a table after you rappel downwards into a CIA safehouse. You should see it right when your team mate says "D*mn! All this stuff is CIA!"
Chapter 5: The Edge Intel Locations
Intel Location 8: You will find this "papers" intel on the ground inside of the Sky Wadi gym's room.
Intel Location 9: You will find this "newspapers with brick/bomb on top" intel on the ground inside of the top apartment's room. This is right after you cross the crackling metal bridge between buildings.
Chapter 6: The Pit Intel Locations
Intel Location 10: You will find this "paper folder" intel on the table to the right of the American flag and the corpse.
Chapter 7: The Battle Intel Locations
Intel Location 11: You will find this "package" intel taped to the red "STOP" roadsign, which is found below the hanging corpses outside.
Intel Location 12: You will find this "tape recorder & photo" intel on the ground to the left of the entrance of the storefront building. It's lying on the ground next to the sniper rifle.
Chapter 9: The Road Intel Locations
Intel Location 13: You will find this "American flag" intel at the beginning of the mission. It's the American flag hanging on the meeting room wall above candles.
Chapter 10: Riggs Intel Locations
Intel Location 14: You will find this "papers" intel on the table inside of a big white army medical tent.
Intel Location 15: You will find this "paper" intel on the glass table next to Riggs. It's after he shoots two soldiers, but has to be picked up before you follow him to the Depot.
Chapter 12: Alone Intel Locations
Intel Location 16: You will find this "tape" intel on the ground next to a fan and other electronic equipment. It's inside of the kitchen of the room that you zip line into.
Intel Location 17: You will find this "vest" intel hanging below the sink of the Radioman's bathroom.
Chapter 13: Adams Intel Locations
Intel Location 18: You will find this "tape recorder in can" intel on the ground in the rocky area after you've gone past the airplane wreckage. When you exit the wreckage, look to your left side and you'll see it.
Intel Location 19: You will find this "statue" intel on a schrine with candles in the shantys after you chase off the locals. It's right around when your team mate says "There's our exit."
Chapter 14: The Bridge Intel Locations
Intel Location 20: You will find this "framed papers" intel on the chair, inside of the room to your left after the turret area.
Intel Location 21: You will find this "taped-on paper" intel that's taped onto the American flag on the wall of the soldiers memorial.
Chapter 15: Welcome Intel Locations
Intel Location 22: You will find this "framed photo" intel on a black & white table of the apartment.
Intel Location 23: You will find this "documents" intel on the bed-side table after you go upstairs in the apartment. |
