Hello folks,

I am planning a ~15 day roadtrip in July @ the west coast of the USA and I need some tips from some USA people.

I planned a trip through some remote locations, so most of the hotels are booked in advance. So the schedule is quite fixed. There is no room to go to Seattle or Mexico Wink

The only thing that is open is what we actually will visit during our roadtrip. And with we, I mean, me and 5 others and our bad ass big ass rental SUV (which was shit cheap to rent btw, 600$ for 2 weeks Laughing Laughing, gotta love the crisis ! )

So the schedule roughly goes as following

LA (2 days) - Six Flags Laughing
Coastal highway - Monterey - Santa Cruz
San Francisco (2 days)
Yosemite Park - Mono Lake
Death Valley
Las Vegas (2 days)
Zion Park
Grand Canyon
Havasu Lake
Joshua Tree National Park
Salton Sea/Slab City + salvation mountain Laughing Laughing
San Diego (2 days)

Anything epic or memorable in the vicinity or between any of the locations would be highly appreciated. Can be anything, nature, building, event, park, things to do/eat/drink etc.

Especially for the cities, I need some tips. I've been to San Francisco, LA and San Diego before, but only half or 1 day when I had to take a flight. So I have seen the major things. On the other hand, 2 days is too short to see everything. So I am looking for the small gems that are not that known, but are very cool to visit

@zmed
Yeah, well, we couldnt' squeeze in Sequoia NP, but we are going to Mariposa in the south of Yosemite because apparently, there are some Sequioa trees there as well Very Happy

@iconized
Any tips on what to say or do to be guaranteed a cavity search? I've only been pulled once from the queue for additional questioning/scans. I asked them what triggered that decision, but they said 'cannot disclose' Laughing

Dunno, not being on a list helps a lot. Anyway I will never visit a country that makes me go through customs like that.

I won't let some stupid customs spoil my experiences in the national parks. Can't blame nature for having retarded people living in its neighbourhood.

I did half of that trip (Reno -> Yosemite -> San Fran -> Down Highway 1 -> LA -> San Diego -> TJ -> Pheonix -> Las Vegas

My tips:

Stop at lovely places along highway 1 - I enjoyed Seaside, Santa Cruz, etc. Look for whales at Monterey - you should be able to see them!

Don't visit TJ - it's horrible.

Magic mountain is the best theme park I've ever been to - it's AMAZING. Go on a week day and you won't queue more than 5 minutes, you'll be ill before 1pm (I have been, both times)

Visit the saddle ranch on Sunset Bvld while doing the Hollywood thing - great bar, good food, good drinks. Bucking Broncho there quite a lot too. Very "hip" place to be.

See as much of Yosemite as you can - don't just go to the lake. The valley with the amazing waterfalls is sweeeet. Visit the mega massive trees too!

Make sure you go to Grand Canyon on your way past. It's awesome. While visiting, stop in Williams and find the mega bbq ribs place - they're awesome. Williams is a weird little dusty "route 66" town, but the BBQ ribs at the ribs place kick ass.

In Vegas, if you're into clubs, do a VIP party bus club tour. They work out much cheaper than the entry costs to a single club, and are ALOT of fun. And no queueing to get into bars / clubs.

Fuck dem bitchez in Vegas!!1111one

Monterey Bay Aquarium is a must see!!! Then you have Disneyland, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe off the top of my head... If you're looking to go clubbing/nightlife, DON'T. It's all crap outside of San Diego/Las Vegas. The crazy stuff here happens in private parties, not clubs ^^

Dutch customs are not much better btw. I guess if you come from a country like Egypt or Somalia the chance you get treated like that is lots higher. Seriously if they see a reason to check you up, you will have to co-operate, but it is fucking rape. Yeah I know there are people out there that put stuff in their anus or vagina, perhaps then customs should use a body scanner.

I'm curious as to when the cavity search will take place? Last time I looked, you don't get searched visiting any of the locations that are planned.

Would love to give you some travel tips but first we need to know what is your agenda. In plain terms, put your list in the order of travel.

The Grand Canyon is going to blow you away. Too bad you didn't plan on a burro ride to the valley, it is better than any ride at Magic Mountain.

Well Compugeek most people who visit the USA get there by plane, so that would be customs at an airport.

Because we are located on the border of mexico ... and they look mostly Mexican hahaha
Point is, Six Flags is not that much fun unless you are 12 and Mexican Wink - but thats because you dont mind the heat ... not racist again Wink
In the LA area, Malibu area is fun to drive through and has plenty of places to stop by, it also features an Ocean and bars/beaches. Downtown is actually most fun these days for dinners and such, let me know if you need restaurant tips, just let me know what kind of food. LA rules at sushi and mexican food Smile

Six Flags is fine in Summer assuming it's not a weekend or the school holidays.

The lines are dead during the week and they all have steam / shade too.

GO TO MAGIC MOUNTAIN!

Well, we all fly +15h, land at 8pm and will probably be pretty jetlagged. I guess getting up early the next day, driving or doing anything tiring is not a very good idea. Sooo, six flags is perfect. Get up at 9-10, go there, spent the afternoon and drive to the first hotel.

+ tickets were only $30.

And i highly doubt it will be very crowded as that six flags nearly went bankrupt because of a lack of customers...

and @Compugeek, the list i mentioned was in the order of travelling...

and we all have difficult agendas and limited holidays. The only schedule that was possible for the 6 of us, is the agenda that we have now. So any question as to 'why not an extra day or why not this or that' 'no time' Smile
