Quote:

Sega shared final details today on Phantasy Star Online 2's pricing scheme, and also revealed that the game, or a version of it at least, will be coming to a third platform.

The big change from past PSO games as far as pricing goes is that PSO2 will be free-to download and play. It will use an item transaction system, meaning you'll need to pay for some items.

PC and Vita owners won't have the game all to themselves. Sega announced a smartphone version, which will be released on iOS and Android.

The smartphone version will be different from the PC and Vita version. The PC and Vita versions offer cross platform play. The smartphone version will just share data with the two versions

The smartphone version, and the relationship with the PC and Vita version.
Sega also says that the smartphone version will offer simpler character creation, and a simpler control experience, complete with social game elements. Sega says to expect a more "personal" and "simple" experience compared to the other two versions.

The PC version of PSO2 will be arriving first (as previously promised), with service planned to begin in early summer. The smartphone version will come next, in Winter 2012. The Vita version is due in Spring 2013.

The Phantasy Star Online 2 schedule.
Sega will hold the game's promised closed beta test in late April. This test will reach a scale of 100,000, and will allow for 24 hour play (when there's no maintenance, of course). Players will also get to sample story elements from the game.

Nice, I have fond memories of PSO.... also some not so fond memories of some really screwed up stuff, but overall it was fun for sure.

I really didn't expect to see this franchise ever again though, I figured it was dead for good.

You really should pick up a cheap PSP, if you haven't already, as Phantasy Star Portable/Portable 2 are both incredible! I'm also considering going back into Blue Burst, but only if I can find a way to stop the game teleporting you all the way back to Ship Selection/Lobby once you complete a quest Sad If it worked like PSOv2, where you return to Pioneer 2 instead, that would be awesome.. but sigh Sad

Naw, PSO is an instanced hack'n'slash MMO with tons of loot. Doesn't play or look anything like TLR.

Nice. I actually recently started playing PS Portable 2 on my PSP. I loved the PS games on the consoles big time. Up there with my FF fandom.

Same here! PSO + FF = my favourite a/jRPGs. I really hope Sega put this out worldwide, rather than locking to JP for a while like they did on PSO and PSOBB.

Epic beta footage!

Forest Area
Caves Area
Caves Area + Dragon fight.
Urban (!!) Area

Man, I'm epically excited for this - love how the music is very similar to PSO, just remixed slightly. The whole game is giving off a delicious air of "This is the PSO you know and love... just improved!" I truly hope Sega release the English beta ASAP, I've taken to playing PSO Ep1&2 Plus! on the Dolphin GC emulator Very Happy

Why you add that? I don't get insulted that easily. Laughing

But who else besides Sabon would be all over a Jap Crap thread. Razz

Naw, the only "online only" version is Blue Burst -- and even then that's only on emulated servers. The original game had an offline mode for Episode 4. PSO (Dreamcast), PSOv2 (Dreamcast and PC) and PSO Episodes 1 & 2 (Gamecube+Xbox) are all playable offline or in 4-player splitscreen co-op. Since I couldn't play Blue Burst due to the aforementioned quest issues and I didn't want to downgrade myself so severely back to PSOv2, I decided to just emulate instead Very Happy Looks great (16xAA/3xInternal Res <3), runs great, plays great.

I'm just surprised, and very happy, about how much PSO2 actually feels like PSO. I'm a huge fan of Phantasy Star Universe, but the game changed a lot and stopped feeling like Online. That's not to say it's a bad game, just different, whereas PSO2 looks and sounds just like an enhanced/expanded PSO. Awesome times ahead for my love of Jap Crap Very Happy

Phantasy Star Online 2 Launches in Japan On July 4th

Fixed Sad there's no word of EU/NA yet, though I'm hoping DSO's rumours are true and we hear about it next week or sooner. Though if this stays a JP exclusive it won't surprise me... the last PSO titles on PC were JP exclusives for quite a while Sad PSOv2 never saw an EU/NA release and BlueBurst took almost a year before it came out in NA.

Pretty much all versions of PSO had offline modes, except for Blue Burst Sad Blue Burst requires connecting to the internet. PSU had offline capability too, though it was saddled with GameGuard security which meant you had to at least have a net connection to launch the game >_< Bah.
