Another take is only in september and a second degree can go fuck itself.
That fucking professor have failed almost everyone. more than 100 people are in situation as me. Whole studies goes for fucking nothing because of this old piece of shit

How many people total? Over 100 sounds like there's something wrong with him and his course, not the people.

Each time, only like 10-15 people pass. There have been 3 tries.....
I am anserwing all questions on exam and nothing works. He is just fucking randomizing it,
Ofc he can't be dealt with. His degree is too high

Sucky situation, asshole professors are everywhere..
I still remember Physics 1, I had to wait two years before actually managing to pass that exam, with a ratio of ~130-140 failed students out of 150 every single time. Patience, you need it.
Or just follow Inz's advice

blablabla, maybe the students are collectively stupid
No really, you can't blame teachers for collectively failing. You can't demand a success rate for a certain course. It does happen that whole classes collectively fail because they did no effort. I've given the same course now for 4-5 years. I use the same course and same slides ever since. Sometimes they all pass, sometimes they all fail. A lot of students hoard together, have the same behaviour, same agendas, sometimes it's just not good enough.
Going to the board won't change shit. What's next? 100 people don't go to the class, take exam, fail all together. Then let 50% pass? That won't work, you give them too much power. And hey, students, will always abuse any little amount of power they have
I've had classes with 30 people. None of them showing up in the year. Rumor has it the exam is shit easy because it is open book. I cordially invite the students for a test exam because I hear the rumours as well Who shows up? The 5-10 people who are always present. Who does not show up?, those never showing up.
Result? 20-25 of them failing in 1st pass. So second pass in August, guess what, they all pass. And the exam is the same level of difficulty. I have a bag of 10-15 questions, each exam I take 4 at random from the bag. I use the same bag for the test exams, so sometimes the test exam is 50% the same as the real exam. Yet, they keep failing, year after year after year.
And I know more than 10 of the 15 questions are floating around in some form of 'exams of the previous years' document which are available for sale in the students organization. So yeah, i don't change the questions, I want to give them a chance.
Each year I start with the same slideshow
*Each year the course is underestimated
*Each year 75% fails in 1st pass.
*You don't have to come the courses, but you are highly encouraged
*There is a test exam which is highly representative for the real exam
Yet, they fail. Can't explain that.
@Werelds, There is almost nobody at a university who is teaching and not doing research. You can't be a good teacher if you don't know what's going on in the scientific world. Plus, you won't get tenured if you are bad at research. Those old dinosaurs might be a bit slow at their sixties, but be damn sure they had some nice scientific career before being tenured.
On topic... I heard the summer will be really shitty. So you can study during the summer. Can;t you defend in september or ask to a defense nevertheless? Would really be retarded to let you lose an entire year because of small 3ects course...

IT. Mathematics one. First semester ~250 students.
Exam: 210 fail, 40 pass.
20 of them with 50-65% score (<50% fail)
20 of them with 66%+ ... I was one of the 66% plus
I prepared with a friend of mine for 1 week, 6 hours a day and we prepared lots of lots of notes.
-> The professor should not lower the standards that are required to pass the exam, just because the students are too lazy to spend time learning the stuff.

Horseshit spankie. If he gets a 90% failure rate 3 times in a row, that's not laziness.
On two occasions I've had a professor (university degrees rather than my "measly" vocational degree) removed from a course and its "sequels" because they're just not fit as a teacher. Not everyone is capable of teaching other people anything. I personally passed both courses, but of the 87 other people in my year at the time, only 3, respectively 5 others did after second try (first course it was only me and one other who passed first try, second course it was 3 of us). Wanna know the difference? All of us had done a similar course at another university before. In both cases the required textbook was a highly theoretical piece of shit that not only barely had any examples or assignments, but was also intended for people who were already familiar with the basics of the matter at hand. Add to that that neither teacher provided any decent examples or exercises, and both courses are fucking annoying to learn on your own. Of those 87, just about everyone showed up because both courses had a reputation of having people fail.
Once replaced, most of those 87 passed (although from what I hear, one of my former fellow students only got it in his 5th out of 4 years - 2nd year course ). I'm not sure how they changed, although I do know the textbooks were replaced. Courses in question were "System Engineering & Control theory" and "Logic & Set theory". Neither is hard if taught properly because it's all just logic really.
So no, it's not just students, it does happen (more often than you think) that the "teachers" are just shit
Both of them were in fact highly intelligent and I personally did have some good conversations with them (and one even gave me bonus points o/), but they are fucking terrible teachers. There are tons of lazy students and lots of my fellow students at the time only showed up for exams for other courses, but there are plenty of shit teachers as well. It's too easy to blame it on lazy students. I never said standards should be lowered either, I'm just saying that the way a course is taught can make a huge difference
So KC, if attendance rates were good and he keeps having these ridiculously high failure rates, go to the board and have his methods and exams examined. Doesn't hurt to try.

First of all I want to say there are complete nutter professors, but not really that many. And nobody fails students for fun, why would they do that? And if they do fail excessively for no reason, go to the faculty. Of course faculties will intervene if the professor is completely out of order. But it doesn't happen that much. Those guys don't change from being nice and smart to completely fucked all of a sudden. And if problems persist over a long period of time, he will be reprimanded.
@KillerCrocker, obviously I can't judge your personal situation as I am obviously not there to observe what's going on. And it would be really shitty if you would have to lose a year because of a minor course such as a 2ects course. I am just giving my personal opinion on education
@Werelds
Well, I hear that excuse all the time. But I always see people skipping class because the 'class is going too slow', 'class is boring', 'I learn better from the book', 'class is a waste of time' etc. I do agree that a lot of the classes are boring and expendable, but hey, people have to be entertained now and then...
And yeah, some of the professors are a bit strange and not completely fit to teach. But that's because they are research freaks and have to teach because, well they have to, it's mandatory. Who said that bad researchers are sent to give class? That's not true at all. And a university is not a bunch of retards. You don't 'accidentally' become a professor. It's highly competitive, so people should have respect for the professors, even if they can't turn on a computer ( ) or give class. They must be good at something...
It's the student's job to understand it, not the professor's. If you don't get it, buy a book, go to the library, look it up on the internet, ask someone else. Too many times I've had students in front of me who answer a question with 'Yeah, I really didn't understand that in the book, so I couldn't study it, can I get another question' Who cares if you didn't understand it? So you didn't get it, so you just skipped it?
I studied engineering a couple of years ago and I attended classes. Some of them were ok, some of them just sucked (yeah, some people cant give class, i admit that). But I always passed, how? If you don't get it, go to the library, get another book, and check it out. Go to wikipedia etc. Now I am teaching at the engineering faculty, I am always open for students with questions outside the lessons, they hardly ever show up...
Last year I started with economics at university. Quite obviously, I can't attend class. I attended 0h of the classes so far, I only attend the exams. Is it hard? yeah. Do I miss sitting in the classroom? Yeah, it's hard to know what to study, how to study, takes longer to understand things. Is it possible? Yeah, I have to buy additional books now and then, go to libraries, surf half of wikipedia etc, but eventually, it is possible. So far I passed all my exams, only had to take a 2nd pass once.
It's not kindergarten: study these 10 questions and you will have 5 of them on the exam. No, comprehend the matter and the bigger picture and take the exam. The classes and the books are a helpful tool in understanding the matter, but far too many times students take those as the absolute maximum that should be know, when in fact that's most of the time the fundamentals that are needed to pass.

I did say they were highly intelligent, they're just incredibly crap at teaching.
I don't think you understand just how bad these 2 were at teaching. It's the kind that scribbles a whole blackboard full without saying a word, turn around and go "any questions?". They had it all fine in their head, but when you'd ask "so why'd you differentiate that?" their answer would be "well because I had to". No chance to reach them after class either, they'd always disappear to fuck knows where, not their chambers at least.
Saying students should use Wikipedia and what not is fine, but honestly, why the fuck did I pay tuition (and yes, I did pay) then? I'm sorry, but that doesn't sit right with me. The university gets money, the teacher (regardless of whether he's a professor or not) gets money to teach - fucking teach. Particularly with something like computer science or mathematics it's all about being able to apply the knowledge you've gained. No, sorry, but the educational system is shit enough as it is (for teachers as well as students; the paperwork you poor teachers have to go through is just ridiculous).
That said, I also had a bunch of great teachers who'd always be there for you and take the time to answer any questions. You can say whatever you want about books and other informational text, nothing beats a teacher to actually explain it properly. That's why the profession exists in the first place.
I'm not saying all are bad, but saying it's always students is just as much horseshit
| spankie wrote: | Ok, in that case, there is only 1 solution.
1) Go find a hot chick in your class
2) Convince her that she has to give up her degree for the greater good --> this one is really important
3) Let her file a complaint for sexual harassment
4) Enjoy his career cratering

The problem with shitty teachers at the uni (in Holland atleast) stems from the fact that researchers which have absolutely no interest in teaching are practically forced to do required teaching. With our current "everyone has to be complete and whole" bullcrap mentality, it is deemed necessary to be qualified for all situations.
I once had a postdoc give a class, it was a disaster. The guy had been my supervisor some months ago so I knew for a fact he was nearly a genius, but he had no luck with getting his point across to students. The problem was that he was explaining things like he would to colleagues, the student cohort though has a very diverse character so not every student will understand WTF is going on. It is very hard to prepare a logical story, it's not like a work meeting. I could see from the faces around me that most people had no clue what they were just told.
Many courses at the uni are very dynamic, new lecturers are added every year. Some of them are first-timers, some have not mastered the art after all the years. Just because a whole clas fails, even if teh teacher was brilliant, does not mean the class was lazy or stupid.

Thats not the problem here... the questions on the exam were easy and I answered them. But nothing helps. it is just unpassable.
idk if he is only looking for some of his keywords or something in answers but cmon... This is just fucking stupid.
