I've set my eyes on the Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 with the intention of combining it with the Razer Tiamat 7.1 headset. Any thoughts?

Any ETA when Razer Tiamat 7.1 will come out?

I had ASUS Xonar DS for couple of months and was happy but recently switched to HT OMEGA CLARO, and will never purchase any different brand, absolutely love the HT Omega Claro.

The headset was launched mid-March with low quantities of units. Since then it's been basically a hardship to Razer managing to keep stock. Although, I managed to snag one some 10 days ago. And since these headphones are highly dependent on the audio hardware, it's quite laughable when used with the on-board sound card (well at least on the P67 extreme4). That's why I'm on the lookout for a quality audio card.

If you have the money the Xonar ST/STX is pretty much the best. Combine that with nice high quality headphones and/or stereo system and it's outstanding.

Any headset/headphone which comes as 'surround' is a joke. Stay far away. It is much better to buy quality studio headphones and then use Dolby Surround / Headphone on the soundcard to the stereo output.

Xonar DG is dirt cheap and has headphone amp on it (about 30e). There is also newer model called DGX which has PCI-E 1x , DG is PCI.

Best avoiding PCI as any upgrade in future likely wont have legacy PCI slots on board.

For the Xonar Essence the ST is actually better then the STX. For whatever reason the STX (PCI-E Version) lost a couple of things that the ST had, like the serial bus for the analog-surround output daughter card.

But most motherboards these days don't have PCI, or if they do the slots are right under the PCI-E 16x slots so you can't use them anyways.

At that price point, I would go for the Sennheiser HD 558, which would offer a far superior sound quality in stereo, versus the subpar "surround" sound you'd get with these or similar. Trust me, been there, done that.

D2X is the equivalent of D2/PM, it does have the same features but the D2X is PCI based and requires an additional power cable.

I own the D2/PM, pretty good sound card, just that the drivers are unstable .

I've been using the Essence STX for about half a year now and have never had a single problem with it.

Requires a molex power input as well, but that only helps further ground out any noise.

Asus's drivers for their soundcards are my favorite. The control panel for it is incredibly simple, small, and no bullshit.

Coupled with a good stereo amp and speakers, and/or some nice studio headphones it produces great sound. Even if you spent more I think it would be hard to find a better part out there.

I got a Xonar DX and I'm not particularly happy with it. I assume my complaints could apply to other Xonar cards as well.

The power connector pins got messed up the first time I was disconnecting them and now I need to twist the cable a specific way in order to get it proper power. I was literally just pulling out the connector cable like on any other component and they broke. Unlikely you'll encounter the same problem, but I think it says something about the quality of craftmanship.

And another thing are the driver issues. I've had games that completely had no sound (SWTOR during release for example), games where part of a sound gets stuck and keeps repeating and forces me to restart my PC (EVE Online, still happens every time I exit the game).

On-board cards on my last two mainboards had no such issues.

Sound quality of the card seems nice although I don't really have anything to compare it with, other than crappy on-board.

Other cards will not need a external power cable.

I've got a Xonar D2DX and your right about the power connection on the asus cards, I think i'm going to break it everytime I try to unplug it. Other than that and no front panal connection I have zero problems with my Xonar.

been using my Audigy 2 ZS for nearly 10 years by now Razz and it gets sometime chunky with some new games, specificaly in shortcut scenes...

for me the Xonar Essence STX is damn expensive here (US$ 250), but that would be the card i've would buy to replace the Audigy.

also, i plan to upgrade my motherboard in a few months, and as some allready told, some mobos will not have pci expansions, only pcie, be carefull with that.

and, the integrated audio system of some mobos (top line) are blewing the vast quantities of dedicated sound cards around.
