the guy - his name is charles carreon - sued the oatmeal because they complained that a web-comic aggregator site was stealing their comics. Then the oatmeal collected money for the lawsuit and money for two non-profits. Now he is suing them too.
Worse than jack thompson, and that is a pretty epic achievement. Just epically bad.
Yeah, I've been following this too. The sheer scale and enormity of the scumbag levels emanating from both Carreon *and* FunnyJunk are just.... seriously.. it defies belief. I hope Matthew Inman counter-sues them both. Even if he doesn't, the Kickstarter fundraiser already made over $150,000 for charity -- that's fucking awesome
That blog post misses the reality of the situation though.
Whoever is 'funnyjunk' hired the lawyer to help them sue Oatmeal/etc.
The lawyer likely charged a fee in advance knowing all well that 'funnyjunk' will never win the lawsuit. So said lawyer gets, let us say, $2000, for throwing together some fairly standard paperwork and submitting it. Easy money for the lawyer.
You see stupid lawsuits like this all the time. The lawyer knows full well nothing will happen with the case, and even likely get thrown out - So that is why he charges a fee in advance to do some easy paperwork.
So this guy isn't exactly a Jack Thompson. Jack Thompson did/does stuff entirely different.
It's like that recent case where some lady is sueing the state of Indiana for 1 trillion dollars because they impounded her car. She likely paid some lawyer $500 in advance to do 20 minutes of work. The lawyer knows full well the case is going to get thrown out and do hardly any work. A cool $500.
Either that, or all the lawyers will see Carreon as a new standard of douchebaggery, and they’ll rise to meet it by, for instance, including baby-punching in their billable hours.
as Mchart says, easy money for some paperwork, but i have the feeling that Mr. Carreon is serious about this one...
