If you have lots of ram, also consider using the -maxMem option in command line. I have 8GB of RAM:
"c:\Program Files (x86)\ArmA 2\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe" -beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -nosplash -mod=@dayz -maxMem=6144 -skipintro /high
More info: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters#Performance
edit: lol - "2047 is hard-coded maximum (anything higher falls back to 2047)."

2047 is hard-coded maximum (anything higher falls back to 2047).
it says in the wiki, with filecache being excluded? does it still work ?

Sure enough it does say that. Game still works with the 6GB setting, but I'm not sure if it's really using 6GB or just 2GB.

as far as i know those maxmem & cpucount commands are just there to restrict arma 2 from accessing it (like,if you need them for streaming or whatever).
but hey,who knows if that is even true

any chance the max threads setting can be used to divide the threads a bit better? atm one core goes to 80% while the other 3 are at 25% during gaming.

I don't think it would effect that behavior. If it's using 25% on the other 3, then it's using that core and max threads is set properly. If you want the game to better balance usage between all cores, that is something BIS needs to do with code optimization in the beta patches.
edit: iirc this is one area that BF3 shines. Cores show good balancing in utilization in Task Manager in that game. That sort of optimization can be time consuming (expensive) to implement.

of course 85% isnt the end of the world as long as it doesnt hit 100%, but thats the issue of course what if more AI is present etc and it does go up to 100%

Okay so I tried getting this game running last night and finally managed but it was already pretty late to be in the mood to trying to figure out options commands controls etc...
Ran around for a bit got fucking scared, didnt understand what the feck i was doing and got munched on after about 15 minutes before dying lol...
I spent about 10 minutes on one game running around with like 4000 blood and in shock and couldnt see fuckall on my screen, pretty scary when suddenly you see a zombie running at you.
Anyway things I noticed during session...
Debug window was wayyyyy to big, couldnt see my inventory because of it (fixed with interface size in options i believe)
FOV is a fucking joke.... I got motion sickness after playing a while, just felt really weird running around in FPS mode.
With AA on I found all the trees and stuff had small white dots on them which was a little distracting, managed to just down the AA and seems to be more tolerable now.
Main gripe is with the mouse... Just seems really odd... I've tried adjusting the X / Y sensitivity but the mouse movement is just fucking weird... If i move on the x plane with the mouse its got a certain sensitivity which I adjusted and is fine... up and down the same thats a bit less but fine.
If you move left and down for example, the mouse is like in accelerated mode and spins round too fast...
Just feels really ugly as a result. Can't wait to get into the game but I really really need to watch the tutorials, didnt have a fucking clue what I was doing.
Best moment, being in my first house finding lots of goodies, going to open the door to leave and noticing its raining plus seeing my first zombies walking past outside.... Looking down at my gun and realising I'm almost outta ammo.
Wow... suspense.

Head bobbing can be turned down a great deal in the gameplay options. As for the other stuff refer to

I found during my playtime and from watching these videos that they all have this context menu on the left the use the mouse wheel to navigate with. Last night whilst I was playing I didnt have that at all...
Wondering if its because of the server rules I was playing on?
For example if i have bandages and am bleeding, to bandage myself i had to go into my inventory right click the bandage and do bandage self...
Whereas in the videos they just mouse wheel down to apply bandage and do it that way which is much quicker... There a tip when choosing a server on what I need to look out for to have a nice easy mode to play on till i get used to the game?

It's old. The new system requires you to go to the gear menu

bandages and stuff were moved into the inventory in a recent patch
the wheel menu is still there for using items in the game world, like checking zombie gear or opening doors or climbing ladders
the debug menu should be tiny
in options, set interface size to smallest and see that your interface resolution is at your native resolution
you can have the 3d resolution be lower than that for a slight performance increase and blurrier image, or same as native for sharp image.

Hopefully will be online again later on this aft or this evening. Wanted to enjoy the game more but just couldnt as was too tired and all the options which needed tweaking were making me not enjoy the game.
When a Z is running towards you and your mouse is all over the fucking place, doesnt exactly help. Ended up using all my noob ammo on like 3 zombies and then getting nom nom nom nomd on by other Z's
lol

hehe, that's why you don't panick, nor rage You basically have to stay calm, even if the craziest shit happens. One can never be careful enough, especially when you have found something valuable.
It happens with me all the time. When I just spawn, I'm the totally attacking type, running around rambo/wayne like but today I found a bike and I was so happy (it had a broken wheel but I didn't mind, even riding it slow was awesome!! ), that I instantly turned into sam fisher mode

Earlier today I was just doing the usual looting run through Cherno and as usual tried to gather the many things one needs to survive a journey to the north.
Found lots of great stuff, an AKM, compass, watch, knife etc... then even a ghillie suit! How awesome is that in a game like this. lol
So I travel north relatively cautiously for like 1-2 hours, everything was awesome, just some minor troubles on the way, nothing a ghillie suit can't handle.
I could see the main airfield in the distance and couldn't wait to finally get some military grade equipment from the barracks there. So I'm jogging through the small forest when I see 2 guys running roughly at me at an angle and about 20 meters away.
I immediately hit the ground and stopped moving in the hope that they would simply run past me..
Unfortunately they somehow spotted me and immediately opened fire with silenced weapons.
I took a couple of shots and took one of em out, but died immediately after that.
After respawned I talked to the 2 guys and turns out they weren't actually bandits or anything but simply thought I was and that I was sneaking up on them, hiding with my ghillie suit and all. Of course the guy who I killed was just as fucked as me, with all his newfound military equipment on his dead body in the north.
It was the closest I ever got to the airfield ever since I started playing about a week ago... and in the end killed again by DayZ making everyone trigger happy mass murderers in self defence (or so they say)
Awesome game really. I love the excitement when you see other people and you have no clue whatsoever how they're going to react.
One guy might shoot you, another might just run away, yet another might offer to team up with you.
Like earlier today I was in a building when I turned around and found a guy had sneaked up on me...
I resisted the urge to shoot and he was a nice guy and asked for a blood transfusion, which I of course did right away.
He could have killed me, I could have killed him, but we didn't.
Now I got a new friend on steam
TLDR;
Never forget that not everyone wants to kill you and there are good guys out there too, even if sometimes it doesn't seem like it.

Absolutely, also the fact that infected can no longer see/attack through walls is very much needed.
