I am due to graduate on Friday. Tonight is Wednesday night. I get email from academic counselor that they are rescinding my graduation due to a lack of units. They had previously approved my graduation a month ago, and I had met twice with them face-to-face to make sure I was graduating on time.

I spent the last hour going through my transcript, and shockingly they appear to be correct. I don't have enough units to graduate. However, I've been manually monitoring this number for years, making sure I have enough units, and now all of a sudden I have some units missing. Furthermore, if I had missing units, why did they approve my graduation at all and tell me that everything was ok when I talked to them face-to-face, SPECIFICALLY TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS SITUATION NEVER AROSE!?!?

Now it seems I'll have to take some additional bullshit courses I don't care about over the summer (Introduction to Painting and Vampirism in Anime Laughing) just to get enough units to graduate, and this will cost me thousands of dollars, as well as upset all my plans for the summer ($1k+ trip to carribean, $2k+ trip to europe).

And tomorrow morning I have an exam I am in danger of failing that I have to study for, and now I can't concentrate due to all the stress this is causing.

By units? Do you mean Credits? If I understand from your posts, you are/were studying in CS major?

How many of them are You missing to graduate?

5 Units. 1 class is 4-6 units.

And yeah, units = course credits = credits, I use them interchangeably.

What school you do attend if you do not mind telling?

I was under impression You attend university in California, and it's first time I have ever heard school using unit system as credits and course being 4-6 credits/units

Most of classes in my school give 3-4 credits

University of California at Irvine.

Every school weighs units/courses differently here (in California). A course at UC Santa Cruz will be 5 units, but will only count for 4 units at UC Irvine. It makes transferring units a nightmare.

Thanks I'm going to go tomorrow and try to work out a deal with them where I take the classes online. That would really save my ass. But if I have to spend the summer in Irvine studying Vampirism in Anime and Painting, I think I'll fucking snap =/

Ahh, wow. I can only image if one would transfer from a college/uni from NY to a CA with different units/credit ratio. They will fuck you over pretty hard and would require You to repeat plenty of courses

I wish You good luck on the exam! And I hope you straight things out with the Advisor.

So far, I am in good position to graduate in December, I will have enough credits/required courses but I won't meet with the Dean until middle of September/October to sign it. Hopefully, I will not get screwed and have to wait until Spring 2013 to graduate.

A little around half of the classes that most students will end up taking for a 4 year degree plan contain classes which have little to do with the eventual major and are designed for 'whole scope person'.

The bullshit goes well beyond high school.

From what I can tell, one of my Philosophy classes might not be counting for anything anymore, but I'm not sure. I'm going to go talk to the counselor tomorrow if I can, and hopefully we work something out. Still, it's stressful as hell =/ Exam tomorrow as well >.>

Yeah it's called "General Education" here, and it's fucking bullshit. I ended up taking philosophy, women's studies, urban warfare & iraq, and introduction to sociology, amongst other things.... and my exam tomorrow is for physics in medical instruments. Rolling Eyes

A class mate of mine had a similar issue.

He had enrolled in a course called 'process engineering' but he thought it was the same as 'process engineering optimisation'. Anyway, something like that, dunno how to exactly translate it from Dutch to English. For the Dutch people 'procesregeling' vs 'proceskunde'. They are very similar, but the former focusses a bit more on optimisation processes, the latter on modelling of processes.

Anyway, long story short. He went to all the classes, he made his exam. But the professor could not enter his points into the system... And then the shit hit the fan. It appeared he had taken an exam for a course he was not enrolled in and he had fucked up the one he was officially enrolled in. Wouldn't have been that bad, if he weren't in his last year... So, we all graduated and he would not. Really a lame situation for the guy. I belief he even had a 16/20, so really bad luck for the guy.

The student administration did not want to change his curriculum, saying 'you have to finish courses you are enrolled in', so he was fucked. But then the professor, who was teaching both courses and was very supportive, became very creative. If the rectorate does not want to change the curriculum, i'll change your points. He just swapped his points from course A to course B, as if he had taken the correct exam Laughing

Why the story? Well, if you studied decent for 4-5 years, professors want to see you pass. So, try to find a solution. Of course, if you just miscalculated, you are fucked:p

I find it really strange that you can miss credits. Here in Belgium, we have 60 credits per year for a standard trajectory. 5 years for a full bachelor + Masters program. In first 3 bachelor years, not many options, you just follow the standard curriculum and you can pick 1 or 2 optional courses. However, the final 2 master years, I had only 1 obligatory course per year and the rest I could choose from different 'bags of courses' (i.e. choose max 3 from the following 10, max 3 from the following 10, 1 from the following 4 etc). And indeed, we had to swap some courses around to get 58-62 credits per year and make sure we had exactly 120 credits in total in the Master years. It was just impossible to miss, if you did not have enough credits, you were not enrolled. Why would they let you enroll if you are missing credits ?!?!

Are you sure they didn't change some of the credits per course? Maybe they were 5 or 4 units in the past and now only 2 or 3? Or you are missing a course on your transcripts? There must be an explanation. I've had my share of paper work fuckups here in the past as well...

Most notably the 'hit the arrow down button, please' incident.
'Here it states, you are still enrolled as a student, you can't start your PhD'.
-'Miss, you told me last time, and I brought my diploma'. Here you go.
'Are you sure this is real and not fake?'
-'Yes, I graduated and got an award from the faculty, just check it. People here know me'.
'I am confused. Please bring a letter from the dean to certify you graduated'
*1 week later*
-'Here you go, the letter from the dean'
'Oh i see, there are only 10 rows on my screen. Look when I press the down button, it states *graduated*, that was on the 11th row. hehehe, that's why I couldn't see it.'
-'Uhu'
'Everything is fine, thanks for your cooperation'

... I went completely

I was studying bio-engineering - biotechnology with a major in computational biology. I had taken up 58 credits and I had to get to 60. And there was only 1 course with 2 credits. Guess what that one was? 'Agricultural structures'... Laughing

So i had to spent my days designing sheds, farms, meadows, field irrigation, tree rows around fields. Laughing Laughing Luckily it was only a small 2credit course. But, yeah, you have to go through a lot of crap, for the sake of god knows why.

My brother had some other technical issues (max of number of courses per semester, and credit issues etc). He was studying organic chemistry synthesis and he was forced to take the course 'spraying techniques'. So he had to run around on a concrete surface with a hand sprayer like in the picture below. And then count 1-2-3 steps, spray 1 second, 1-2-3, spray. And then they verified the spraying pattern on the ground. Laughing Laughing

I'm in the same situation (though not exactly like yours). This lead to me doing my thesis and two courses at the same time. Luckily my thesis supervisor is a great guy, so he is not pushing me to meet all the deadlines. I'm juggling with the courses though, both have required attendance percentages. I know we're all grown up fuckers now, but a little bit more warning or guidances from the university would've been appreciated. Hopefully I'll be done in six weeks with this shit. After doing internships doing courses sucks so much ass Sad

PS. many profs are major dicks btw. Fuckers don't answer mails, when you go up to them you get the question "why didn't you mail me?" (because no one answers dick). Some professors are really cool (during my last internship my prof was fun, brilliant and understanding), but most are "I'm better than you" assholes (well duh I'm a student). Just venting.

Shit, good luck Tainted! That is really retarded and I hope everything sorts out well for you Smile

Thankfully seems like I have the right amounts of credits/units so all I have to worry at the moment is the thesis, although as always there have been several complications..damn, why is it always so hard Very Happy

Good one xD. "Sadly" we've never had lolcourses, only serious ones, even though often not very relevant to my studies, kinda disappointing I have to admit Laughing I would have liked some diversity, just to open the mind a little Razz

Seems I have a philosophy course I took 3-4 years ago that counts for 0 units now... which is bullshit, but it looks like that's the way it is...

*sigh* I've slept on this and thought about it. In the very worst case I'll take summer classes online from August-September, and still be able to graduate as class of 2012. So the situation shouldn't be too bad, unless they don't allow me to take online classes for some reason. Then I'm fucked, because I'll be outside of California for the summer, and working fulltime after that >.>
