It's a massive thing in the UK right now, this skimming nonsense, and it always seems to be Eastern European fucks coming over - mass-targeting cash machines - then cashing out before they can get caught. Whenever I fly back to England to see family, or whatever, I always see more stuff about it on the news - and recently I watched this documentary about police trying to catch them in action.
It's been going on for years now and I *always* check the machines before I use them. I run my hands along the top rim, looking for cut-apart camera phones (they often use those to record your PIN) and I always tug at the card slot and the surrounding mechanisms before use. Sorry to hear about you losing so much money, but at least you're getting reimbursed by the bank.

The ATMs here are all hardcore protected (the ones I've been using anyway), so I think something fishy was going on. One, it has a metal thingy to prevent skimming apparatus, two it's right next to a police station (if that would make any difference). I think they don't know exactly where it happened, just speculating. What I can't figure out is how they got 5500 euros since the daily limit is 1000 (the guy didn't give exact numbers, just said everything was gone).

Damn, Romanians going rampant in the Uk.
You also have gypsy pickpoketers, I think there was a documentary about that, they steal an insane amount of money per year.
Come to think of it gypsies are also from Romania

I never understood why the general populace was allowed to buy tools like that in the first place, I can't think of a single genuine and legitimate reason for any non-developer to own them, aside from illegal card skimming.

Yeah, we are all gypsies here in Romania. We are all also Eastern European fucks - come on guys, you can do better. I'm still waiting someone to post that we should be exterminated, or fenced and held at gunpoint inside Romania. In particular someone from Poland, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria or Hungary - cause they are Eastern European, but not "fucks". Nice 'holier that thou' attitude, gentlemen - especially since you know for a fact that mister_s was robbed by gipsy romanian eastern european fucks.

What part of "92% of ATM crime is committed by Romanians" didn't you understand? Oh, poor you! you poor person you! Of course, come on over and rip off cash machines, we're so sorry we dared say anything  I didn't say every Romanian was the same, but when it's such a huge (NINETY TWO PERCENT, that's EIGHT percent less than TOTAL) amount of crime being committed by the same people .. then yeah, fuck that; I'm damn right going to say "Eastern European fucks"

yeah, that was the main item. But I remember an article who listed a lot of other items and tools, and most of them where used for skimming :/

Aye and, as Sev said; not just programmers but readers too -- including contact-less stuff such as GSM scanning. These tools are, or used to be, available to everybody and I just don't see how they're relevant to the majority of people other than nefarious means.

I will say thats 92% of the ones caught.
So either the vast majority are Romanians doing it, or the Romanians doing it are so thick they keep getting caught, but the majority are other races and not as stupid.

^^ that, however, is a very good point. It's 92% of the people CAUGHT. Who knows what else is involved for those that manage to get away? It could be Russians, Serbians or Polish, but in my experience and eyesight.. Polish guys and gals come over to England and work their fucking arses off. They don't organise gangs and rip the country off for tens of millions due to ATM fraud.
Anyway, for what it is worth; I apologise if I caused offence. I didn't intend to. If it was English people doing it, I'd be saying "Those chavvy fucks!" just as well -- I'm an equal opportunities hater

It's all over Europe and it's not new also, been going on for years now, friend of mine got skimmed last month (money was withdrawn from Canada! of all places). And 92% actually sounds a little weak to be honest, since i have yet to hear of skimmers who didn't come from Romania. For me the reason to never pin anywhere but the bank to get cash and pay cash all ways.

I have had my doubts about certain ATM machines as well and just pressed stop and moved to another machine. You know, ATM machines don't change color overnight...
Good you got all your money back. Imho, can't be that hard to prevent it from happening. What is the cost of installing a monitoring camera near an ATM? Or just put big signs 'This ATM is under video surveillance'. I'd drive 500m around to get money from an ATM under surveillance. Doesn't even matter if you get reimbursed or not. It's always a little misery to go to the bank, wait for the money et...
