Usually (at least in my country) when you file for bankruptcy your remaining properties are becoming property of the owners of the debts, which means they can't work on the patch, even if they wanted to.

Yeah, but Troika went brankrupt and a few devs worked on - and released- a couple of patches for Bloodlines in their own time and on their own money. I doubt BHG will do the same... though it would be awesome if they did Sad

Let's give them some time, and who knows. They probably don't know themseleves what they're going to do now, yet.

This is what happens when you go to the dark side (EA games).

I hope in an unofficial patch.
The only people that are having my sympathy are the people that were let go.

But over 400 staffers in an upstart studio... That's bad business. I mean, Obsidian has around 100, stretching to 150 when they have temporary employees. Bioware used to be pretty much the same in terms of employees. A mixture between mismanagement and poor decisions led to the closure of BHG. So they kind of had that coming.

With Amalur released, BHG could have kept only a core team to work on the patch. I can bet that most of the work on the DLC's was made before the launch. A smaller team could have delivered those, saving the money. Loads of money were swallowed by the Copernicus project, which is , allegedly, almost finished. But, we have yet to see a launch date or even some videos showing that the game is near completion. So, BHG is more like collateral damage in the end. I'm waiting for the announcement about the closure of 38 Studio. I have a feeling that it will be soon.

I assume the team was that big because they were setting up for an MMO.

"In July 2010, The Rhode Island board of Economic Development approved a $75 million guaranteed loan to 38 Studios. 38 Studios has promised to bring 450 jobs to the state by the end of 2012"

That explains a lot. And trust me, you don't need so many people to develop a MMO/patching/introducing new content. Ask Blizzard how many staffers worked/are working on their WoW series.

Also, there is the fact that neither Steam or EA didn't pay the devs their royalties from the sales so far (they should have gone the GOG way, imo). The Rhode Island state co-signed the 75 million$ loan, but the devs never got the entire amount. Also the loan was taken from a private company and no public money were affected. The public money will enter in discussion if 38 Studios can't pay the loan (which wasn't fully granted, so there are a lot of ways to attack the loaner's claims).

Some is on the wiki (the links to the articles is also there). Other was given by ex-staffers on the Amalur forums. Loads of people to blame for this failure. And most of them at the top.

Some of the new inclusions into the game would have included higher quality graphics, no loading screens between areas, expanded combat animations and “greater effort on the world”.

Yet people have tried to tell me multiple times that EA partners help in no way except publishing games..

So 50million for the mmo and still nothing?

(Think how many kickstarter projects it could have been used to finance and develop)

Yup. That could make many people's dreams come true, instead (if it ever sees the light of day) it'll be another MMO that people will quickly forget

Well, they are always looking for the El Dorado. The one who will beat WoW.
Usually, the lacking of imagination and creativity in the AAA industry is in the inverse proportion of the money they spent.

There wont be a game that beats WOW, it was the first major hit..

Unless innovation gives us something completely new, it is going to be a long time before
we see something like a smash hit again.

Everyone is too afraid to sink enough money into something completely different so it is
all being re-burped, "But it worked for Blizzard!".

Mmmm.

The Old Republic could've beeaten WoW, simply because of the Star Wars fanbase.

Eve doesn't beat WoW in numbers, but is different enough that it can survive in the same game-genre as WoW.

Amalur? I love KoA, but a generic fantasy setting MMORPG isn't going to beat WoW, and anyone with a brain could tell you that. Why play a WoW fantasy wannabe when you can play WoW. What's needed is different settings, and an innovation in the genre.

To copy and paste my comment from gamesindustry.biz

"I kind of agree with Curt here. If 38 Studios were a publically traded company, the Governor's comments would've affected the share price. The fact that it isn't doesn't lessen the impact what he said had on the business affairs of the studio. It's a bad mistake, and the Governor shouldn't have spoken out in such a negative fashion to the media."

Probably less that than the fact that everyone else is so inept and blandly trying to copy WoW. You don't need to copy WoW if you're the ones who sell it.

Well, yes, but my point was that a new hit won't come from anyone but Blizzard, because a) other companies are trying to copy the WoW formula and b) when they don't copy it wholesale, they do stupid things (like the lack of end-game content in TOR). More chance of Blizzard creating a new hit than anyone else because a) they won't need to try and create a WoW clone/WoW killer and b) they're fairly smart.

Smile
