Kyle Katarn R.I.P

I recently had a marathon replaying the whole steam jedi knight pack (Minus the crappy jedi academy that has shit single player). Kyle katarn is a fucking epic character. I can't believe they don't wanna use him again.

Loved the dark forces and jedi knight games. Outcast was awesome too but couldnt get into JA much.

Would love a new part...true to the old one with fmv/video cutscenes. .Id pay top dollar for that

Didn't know there was so much hate (maybe it's too much to call it hate?) for Jedi Academy. It was just as awesome as Outcast for me. In some ways Academy was a bit worse, in others a bit better than Outcast, but overall I consider them pretty much equal games. Also, even now I remember the fight with Kyle Katarn at the end of Academy. That's one of the hardest fights I've ever encountered in a game. The developers did that fight properly, with Kyle Katarn being a real fucking badass!

Same here, I always thought JA was very well received, a lot of people I've spoken to actually prefer it to JO, now apparently it's hated? The hell? Neutral Oh well, no biggie.. I thought, and still do think, that the entire Dark Forces series was fantastic. I loved them from the start, though sadly the games prior to JO really haven't aged well Sad

I certainly prefer JA. Much bigger variety of moves alone made it far more interesting Smile

Lulz. Jedi Academy was the most "complete" of them all. (Speaking only about games starting with Jedi Outcast).

True, but story wise Jedi Outcast was much better.

I was being overly harsh on Jedi academy because you are not Kyle Katarn and the missions are just thrown together.

overall its a good game if you can disregard the crappy story and focus just on the gameplay. I just considere it the lowest entry in a great series, but I don't think its a bad game at all.

I also enjoyed Jedi Academy. Story-wise it was weaker, true, but gameplay was better so it kinda evened out.

For its time, Dark Forces was amazing. Interesting levels, enjoyable combat, great Doom clone overall.

For me, JA was mostly an online game. Loaded up one of those great RP mods, where you can challenge others to duels while other players watch the match. That was fun in RP.

I liked more Jedi Academy , yes the story was kinda shitty but overall was a better experience for me , in academy i felt strong and skilled like a jedi/sith should be.
I love both JA and JO but for me JA was a better game overall Very Happy

What I most feel and remember about JA when it came was that it was different, in many aspects, but I did for some reason play a lot of it online with some of the mods people put forward.

The other games are a bag of pure greatness and what in the world is this.

Let's all hope for a Pit Droids 2.

yep. this is my order: Mysteries of the sith expansion, Dark forces 2, Dark Forces 1, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy.

what can I say. I used to think outcast was my favorite, but just 2 motnhs ago i replayed all of them (dark forces 1 and Mysteries of the sith first time ever) back to back in proper order, and that's how it ended up Smile

As much as I *used* to love Dark Forces 2, I still couldn't put it above Jedi Outcast - not in terms of scope, playability or longevity. I was talking to Kenny/Stormwolf about this earlier, DF/DF2 just hasn't aged well at all.

To me, of course =)

there's just something about the epic feel of the level design in dark forces 2 that quake 3 engine doesn't offer. hard to describe, but the atmosphere in dark forces 2 just pulls me in completly. and Mysteries of the sith was just hardcore content. no hand holding, much less powerups, a shit ton of enemies. I better stop talking about it before i reinstall it again Laughing

Jedi outcast however makes the lightsaber a proper weapon. Jedi academy takes the lightsaber to another level. thats what raven did for the series best. they made the lightsaber as cool as it should be. while in dark forces 2 it was pretty shit.

I think that's because Dark Forces was, at heart, still a phenomenally good Doom clone in the SW universe. The lightsaber and 3PP was basically just a gimmick, a lot of people still stuck to using blasters and combining with force powers Very Happy

My favorite is DF2 with addon. But it might be just nostalgia, I haven't played it in ages.

there are model and texture packs that brings it to quake 3 era graphics and beyond. widescreen resolutions work with minor vert- cut out.

the game still holds up well if you have a thing for older titles.

i loved jedi knight series with a passion. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION the best Star wars game (series) there is (besides old school stuff like x-wing haha).

It was a genious mix between :

A proper story (not copy paste movie parts),

Easy, yet complex gameplay (easy to learn, hard to master, controls, skills etc).

Easy on the eye and great feel control wise (it was q3 engine, so homebase lol).

Genuinly Fun (and never felt like a console game .. was it actually ? Probably, but i never felt it as a pc player).

Sadly, i have my doubts, that they will get it right. We'll see, but i don't get hyped too much hehe.

+ MP for free for anyone lol (i bought 2, but still, they had free mp and never bothered changing that).

I'm a little sad I missed the best Star Wars games ever. It was the time I was still a student and couldn't afford to upgrade my already dated PC.

Is there any hope this new Star Wars game won't be consolish crap? Has it been confirmed it will be a new entry in the Jedi knight series?

No, that was just completely baseless and random speculation by the OP. Someone posted a press release for the upcoming unveiling a page or so back that suggested it's a an all new franchise.

JO and JA have aged remarkably well mate, well worth playing even now. And there's still an active mod scene (see id, that's what your fucking engines should be like :@). Plenty of mods with higher resolution textures etcetera and last I checked, even some shader mods.

The game (series) also spawned the probably biggest hoax of a mod.

"Knights of the Force"

Remember that shit ? ^^
