http://www.warp2search.net/news/story/windows_8_broken_ex_microsoft_worker_says.html

Apparently the OS is "broken" but I've yet to read the article myself to see what exactly he calls broken, in my opinion there's always some bugs and issues but service packs and various updates do help a lot.
(There's ~300 or so updates via MS update now for W7 x64 SP1 and around ~970 in total available for download, I have around 600 of them but granted the major issues were taken care of very quickly and with SP1 out it's mostly smaller fixes and the continuing security updates and on occasion a new feature or such.)

EDIT: Metro, App store and navigation complaints mostly, some concern about user friendliness or what to call it.
(It was possible to disable much of this from what I know but apparently it's a bit less so with the latest builds of the Windows 8 OS but it'll be figured out and then those who want to can disable that interface or minimize it or how it works.)

But why would anyone bother? Not like Windows 8 offers something substantially improved over Windows 7, just an uglier Aero and hideous Explorer ribbon.

You are probably correct, there's likely not much to gain for those already using Windows 7 thus there's less of a reason to upgrade from it unless it's for the above interface changes.

Sure there's probably a number of other enhancements "under the hood" for security and the like but that's usually nothing you'd really require.
(And most probably wouldn't even know about it other than advertisement talk or similar saying it's so and so much more secure and so and so much better with performance or memory usage, compatibility and the like.)

It'll be interesting to see how it's received when it's released though I guess this is the direction they're now heading for with Windows, we'll see.

So I installed it on my second pc. To be honest, it's not that hideous. The biggest problem is the lack of the start button, the rest is ok, even a bit better than 7 (certainly feels a bit faster than a fresh 7).

I doubt it will be successful without a start button though.

What will a start button solve? You will still have the retarded full screen start shit, still would only be able to run two apps, the hideous interface, etc. Start button alone is nothing.

What do you mean run only two apps? I've only used it for like 20 minutes but didn't notice such a limitation. And I don't think the full screen start is that bad, really, it's just not where it's supposed to be (that's why a start button is needed, maybe it could just be a link to metro's start).

BTW, I don't know if it's the drivers, but I saw a small improvement on FPS in a couple of games.

I mean the "immersive" Metro apps. They are normally full-screen. but you can drag other ones running to either side of your screen, and then two Metro apps run in parallel (amazing multitasking, I know Rolling Eyes ). You probably haven't discovered it yet, because the Microsoft fucktards haven't thought of leaving any single clue of what to do. With a tablet, most of that is intuitive. But move your mouse to one corner, press and hold a button and drag down/up? You fucking kidding me? Laughing

Also, I will tell you what is wrong with a start screen from my perspective. Let's say you are watching a video on YT or player and want to find some file. Or start some application. With start menu, it covers just a small portion of the screen. But with Tardro, it fills the whole screen, and for what fucking purpose? Now imagine that mess on a 30" monitor.

I guess I agree with you on that, but I dont mind the schitzo dual mode (desktop/metro), I just hope they bring the start back so I can stay on the slightly improved desktop while the derps enjoy the metro.

It kinda makes sense IMO, to have a unified mode (metro) for tablets, phones and desktops, while keeping the old desktop mode available for those who need it (I mean, servers running metro, really? What a joke Very Happy)

I didn't realize there was no start menu at all by default, strange that it would require third party programs to re-enable similar functionality.

Windows is experimenting with Windows 8, like they were with Windows Vista (and look how that turned out Laughing )

We just have to wait for a Win9, more rationalized and fine-tuned version. Just like Win 7 was for Vista.

Win7 didn't revert any of the changes made by Vista, the real difference was that users upgraded their CPUs to dualcores and hardware manufacturers upgraded their drivers to be less crappy.

I fail to see why they are releasing another Windows that is basically a Windows 7 with tweaks...

Well obviously the intent is to make more money. Considering metro it doesn't sound like such a good plan to me though.

Windows 8 Pro (replacing Windows 7 Ultimate)
Windows 8 RT (aimed squarely at tablets with Arm-cpu's, won't be available for other systems)

Some good news for a change. Seems like they finally realized how stupid their previous separation was - after only six years of negative criticism.

We applied the principles of โ€œclean and crispโ€ when updating window and taskbar chrome. Gone are the glass and reflections. We squared off the edges of windows and the taskbar. We removed all the glows and gradients found on buttons within the chrome. We made the appearance of windows crisper by removing unnecessary shadows and transparency. The default window chrome is white, creating an airy and premium look. The taskbar continues to blend into the desktop wallpaper, but appears less complicated overall.

In other words, they've made the desktop look almost monochrome, like the Mac-desktops of old. *sigh*
