yeah my first try went tits up pretty fast too, second one i had solaire along for the ride (who died within a minute or so with me doing pitiful damage because you can't harm gwyn while he grabs solaire, which he was doing half the time, and the other half of the fight was me trying to hit him from behind, which didn't work at all cause i'm bad and he steps forward = out of my reach when he strikes) and then i fucked up
third time did the trick, solaire died again, even faster this time, and i pretty much killed gwyn like every black knight...tank, shield (didn't even parry that much), ninja ring and soul arrows in the face if he dawdles - plus by that time, i finally knew all his moves
Finally, finally, finally managed to get past Biggie and Pac. That one was really a hard fight. Graveyard Sword+4 made it for me
Now on my way down the demon ruins.
Dark Souls is in my Top5 games ever played; for sure!
After 40h in, i'm looking forward to finish this hell of a game in about the next 5-10h or so. at least i hope so...
You are right on the eta. It shouldnt take more than 5 hours.
Welcome to the forums and congratulationz

Ok, just recently bought this game and I just can't get to the third bonfire, I think today I died 50 times trying, but after 5 hours of just trying it's not funny anymore so I guess I quit on this, it's just to hard. I played games for over 30 years and never have I encountered such a hard game, just impossible.
Maybe I am getting too old to play these kind of games.
The third bonfire? As in the first bonfire in Undeadburg?! Come on man, you've got to be trolling us!
That is, if you are going towards/through Undeadburg. If it's not Undeadburg then you are without a doubt going the wrong way, hence the reason you're having such a hard time.
No... it's in Undead Parish and I'm not trolling unfortunately, after I've killed some armored beast I go through the white light and get to face some big hollow with a cape, if I make it that far he always manage to kill me... (or by the smaller hollow that attacks me from behind) guess I'm just not that good in these kind of games.
In that case, if you haven't already, get the drake sword and farm a little to boost some stats (Endurance, vitality should help you out but you might need to dump some souls into str and dex for the drake sword).
Also try to go light and practice backstabs.
And get a decent shield with 100% physical block. Though the wooden shield (I think that's an 85% physical block) in the tower near the first bonfire in undeadburg should be ok, if you decide to keep some heavier gear on you or you manage to avoid hits either by rolling or sidestepping
Just read few pages back. We have all been talking about the game.
Also don't be afraid to use wikidot or other wiki on the game.
Prepare Yourself for the min50h journey !

Get the drake sword you say... can I buy that from the merchant in Undead Burg? How do I know how much str & dex I need to use this sword? I am only level 10 at the moment, guess I have to fight a bit, go to bonfire and repeat this process a few times to get souls and level up more. My way of playing the game so far was just fight till I die, returning me to the bonfire and tried again till I died (and hopefully got my souls back).
Maybe I will try this as a last attempt, I am not good at RPG's, had to quit Dragon Age 1 aswell when it got impossibly difficult.
I've read in some other forums and the wiki pages that there are moves like backstabbing and riposte, but the manual does not mention anything about these attacks.

In my case guess it will be 200h+ ... 10 hrs in now and only at Undead Parish
To get the drake sword you need a bow and a couple of arrows, get ~ 100 just to be safe; even if you don't use them, you can exploit some tough enemies with a bow later on so it doesn't hurt to have one and a few arrows in stock. Once you get those, got to the bridge with the dragon and from the lower part of the bridge, aim at his tail and shoot it a couple of times until it breaks; that will drop a drake sword.
To know the requirements of the drake sword either do a wiki search or the old fashion way: get the item an check it out in the inventory screen.
You can farm pretty well on that bridge as well, especially if you have the ladder dropped to the first bonfire -- -- unlike the guy in that video you'll get more than 300 souls, if you have the latest patch/TU you should be getting about 550 souls each time.
About back stab and riposte: first off the golden rule of dark souls combat is to always lock on (press right thumb stick), now there are some instances that are better suited by not locking on so you'll have to learn those by yourself. try to be careful about it when fighting enemies next to ledges; try to avoid fighting next to ledges.
To do a back stab, you need to be locked on and circle around an enemy and do a normal attack to his back; note that you need to have your shield lowered for a successful backstab.
To parry + riposte you need to hist LT/L2 right before an enemy's strike touches you (that's a parry - deflecting an attack) and right after that do a normal attack (RB/R1) to riposte (witch is pretty much a counter attack).
Keep in mind that this is a game that needs/asks quite a lot of investment from the player, and in return rewards the player equally; the rewards are on par if not better.
So if you think it's not suited for you or you don't enjoy this type of games that require investment from the player, then maybe you shouldn't delve further as it also punishes every mistake.
Having said that, I think Dark Souls is the most rewarding game in the last years and you should definitively give it a chance.
When I shut down this game last night in frustration (I was almost at the bonfire in parish undead) I got killed running from a big hollow knight just outside the church.
This morning I booted up the game and I don't know what happened, but I started at the exact point where I died with full health (a bug?). Anyway, I ran to the bonfire above the blacksmith and rested.
After that I started to just level up, took the elevator down that took me to the first bonfire and gathered lots of souls to get higher stats, got an axe which I upgraded 2 at the blacksmith and finally stood a chance at the hollow knights, I am actually getting the hang of it and have full faith now!
Will try your hints and get that drake sword and lots of arrows for my bow, now I have to conquer some knight which shoots blue electricity or something... will get him for sure now, thanks.
The extra content is the Artorias of the Abyss expansion, which adds more areas, bosses, enemies, NPCs, armour and weapons.
Artorias of the Abyss will cost 1200 Microsoft Points on Xbox 360, and $15 on PS3. It will be released sometime this winter, according to IGN.
bahahahahahah 15$ fuck that.
its like 2 horus more for 60h game

Fuck the casuals, hopefully there will be no easy mode in next Souls game.
I heard the Artorias of the Abyss dlc is much harder than main game, so yeah looks like FROM didn't give a shit about the crybabies.
I'm currently on my NG +++, guess my arse will get kicked a lot then!
How to start the dlc -
Quote:
- Make sure that the Hydra in Darkroot Basin has been taken care of, and Dusk of Oolacile has been rescued from the Crystal Golem in the route behind where that Hydra was. If there's no Golem there, exit the game from where you are and load it up again.
- In the Duke's Archives, a new Crystal Golem will appear after the first bonfire and when you take the elevator up. Kill this golem and collect the dropped pendant.
- Return back to the area where the Golem was, and there'll be a portal which you can access, and warp to the DLC content.
The DLC isn't much harder, but still the hardest area. It's a natural progression, the game's enemies get harder as you progress and upgrade your character and the DLC area is designed to be played with a character that has already been through most the main game.
Around level 90, faith build. So far so good. Long time ago I saw a bonfire now. Probably not so far back, but playing an area for the first time takes more time due to carefull gameplay...bliss.
