Congrats bud , I'm currently working on the thesis since..forever , though I "blame" some projects that I had to do and an almost unpaid very part-time job that I've been doing since a few months ago
But it's good for my résumé, so they say. If you ask me, it feels like a trap

oh man, I worked on my MSc thesis for like 2+ years :/
I worked full time when I finished coursework and was only a part-time student but still took me way longer than I thought since by that time I was fucking sick of uni... no PhD ever for me thank you

Quantity != Quality. I've pulled an A (max letter grade for our euro friends) on every college paper I've ever written, they were all the bare minimum length (and to be quite honest hitting that bare minimum felt like rambling). |
PhD thesis are a summary of a particular research, and that is basically doing something new, or exploring something new about a certain subject. And you have to show that you are capable of certain scientific reasoning, and that you can do serious research.
Basically you choose what you will do for the rest of your life and prove that you have a solid understanding of it...
Masters thesis are not that long (at least here) - 50-60 pages, as you usually are not doing any novel research...

Well yeah, it's a PhD. it's 4 years of innovative research. So you can't get away with 10 pages. It just ain't that easy to explain something new you did in 10 pages. You have to proof it's new and innovative. Describe your methods and results very detailed, so it can be verified etc.
Your PhD is given to non-specialist to verify whether it is of good scientific quality. 1 scientific paper itself is like 10-15-20 pages. So a couple of scientific papers combined, an introduction, general conclusion, acknowledgement and a bunch of formal regulations concerning chapters etc and you are at 120-150 pages in no time.
Anyways, back to writing!

So, I'm currently in the process of writing a thesis. It is literally the most boring thing I have ever done. How the hell did you guys finish this shit? I'm completely stuck. My supervisor also wants me to explain everything, I feel like I'm writing for a bunch of ten year olds.
I absolutely have no clue what I am supposed to learn by doing this and what it should lead to. What is the fucking point here? I'm just reading paper after paper, which I have done countless times in my internships. Yes ffs by now I know how to read and write. I actually miss my internship, which I thought would never happen. I've written a 26 page thesis about my own work in five days, but I got a whopping ten fucking pages in three fucking weeks now with this thesis shit :/ Whatever retard thought of this should've been shot.

Seriously, my colleagues have less people giving them feedback on job interviews AFTER they finished their masters degree.

As if writing it wasn't boring/pointless enough..
I was writing mine with a certain professor about a certain topic, she suddenly has to go to USA for three months ("personal" problems), I find a substitute, he doesn't like what I was writing, I change several parts, more bitching, add new chapters/edit the old ones, still "weak"
^
This is where I am now.

I'm actually at a point now where I just want to give up and tell my supervisor "fuck you and your fucking recommendations, stick them in your fucking ass". He's a great guy, but everytime I mail him a piece I get a long fucking list of recommendations and revisions. He's also obsessed with explaining every insignificant detail. What is my target audience? A bunch of monkeys? All the goddam references, oh the hellish references. Goddam you asshole do I have to find a reference for every goddam sentence?
He actually showed me an example of a good thesis, 96 fucking pages long and 148 references. WHO THE FUCK uses 148 references? I felt my brain cells dying after reading two pages of it. I said the one who wrote this was just writing to write, quantity over quality. My supervisors retort "it's not useless, it's detailed".
So now I'm just putting every piece of info I can in this shit and explaining even the most logical shit. Have fun reading through pages of shit asshole. I'll also reference the shit out of this thesis, I'll put 200 fucking references in the end.
rant over, had to vent.

This is my current workflow, very effective:
Fire up PC (takes a few secs with my sexy new SSD) --> be amazed how fast the PC starts up --> open nfohump and browse --> look at time and think "fuck I wasted so much time!?!?" -->start typing shit --> look for papers --> open nfohump and browse --> read papers and dismiss 95% of it --> look at time and feel depressed --> write a paragraph --> be proud of the single page of writing --> open nfohump and browse --> revise written paragraph (i.e. try to figure out what the fuck you just wrote) --> mail shit to supervisor at the end of the week --> wait for supervisor a fucking week --> while waiting repeat efficient system --> open supervisor's comments, facepalm, curse his entire family tree, curl up and cry for a while --> repeat from first step.

Thesis log, universal date 19.6.12/16.21. At the discussion now, it's even shittier than the introduction. As a wise man once said "I never asked for this". Will try to finish this shit, lost radio contact with supervisor (it's nice he let me know of his absence of duty two days beforehand). Eagerly waiting for supervisor's comments, it's always nice when high ranking officers ask for perfection from new initiates. Logging off now, written two sentences in three hours, just a couple more sentences to go for this day.
