I'm back again with another thread but this time about my shitty isp virgin media broadband.
There connections are nornamally top notch but there restrictions take the piss.
Like if i download 3-4 giogs of data, i get capped for 4-6 hours depending on the time of day.
I'm on 10 mb broadband and getting the free 10 mb which will put me on 20mb broadband, but there restrictions are piss poor.
What does everyone recommend for another isp in the uk?

Just been klooking at sky m8 but when i ent to order they was saying for the speed i was after i have to order there phone package aswell, well they can spin, another customer lost.
Although a good price i can't get my parents to goto spy phone oh well.
I might just stick with virgin media and go faster as they have the fastest speeds as long as the prices are good.

Be Unlimited. Best ISP around. I do well over 1Tb on an average month and have done more many years. No caps at all. Check it out if it's in your local exchange.

Look here - adslguide.org.uk and reads lots

All xDSL ISP's have quirks, its finding the one with the quirks you can stomach.

The fact that in 2012 there are still ISPs that cap your bandwidth is both horrifying and hilarious.

And this is UK, a modern fucking country! Laughing Even in Poland I don't think there's an ISP that caps your bandwidth. Laughing

Virgin used to be great for speed and line quality... but have painful usage caps in place. If you download more than a certain amount during peak time (10AM-3PM) then they cap you down to half of what you currently subscribe to ... for FIVE HOURS. Also they've recently instituted a peak-time cap on filesharing too. On 30Mbit and above you can download 7GB between those times (10GB for the 60Mbit line and 20GB for 100Mbit line) Between 4PM-9PM you can only download 3.5GB on the 30Mbit lines. Again, the 50% reduction in speed lasts for five hours. As you can see, anyone below 30Mbit package has a 75% reduction once they hit their usage limit -- meaning 20Mbit becomes 5Mbit.

It really is quite insulting what they're doing, the caps are unreasonable and unfair, especially for the prices Virgin charge.

Anyone claiming otherwise is wrong or lying Wink

It seems like Sky really are one of the only ones left not capping Sad BT are by far the worst though... they don't just have caps, they have download limits -- if you pass that limit in the month; they charge you £1 per 1GB over, in £5/5GB increments. My mum recently received a £390 bill from them because of it, she's on the BT Total Package 1, which gives you 10GB a month.

Any decent ISP is going to be LLU, and because of that they are going to want your phone line too.

There are a couple that wont, but any on BTw wont be unlimited.

I too am with Virgin and I used to have the cap but for some reason ever since I reset my router to fix an unrelated problem ( using a paper clip in the back to push the little button) the cap never kicks in anymore, I assume its just coincidence as greedy companies like Virgin don't let things like that happen.

Unless of course they discarded the cap for my speed (30 Mb)

The cap virgin recently instated doesn't mean much though if you think about it. Yes, it cuts your bandwidth in half once you download over a certain amount - But they doubled everyones bandwidth for free anyways. So if you had 50mbps you got/get upgraded to 100mbps, and if cut in half due to caps you still have a perma 50mbps.

So really, it's not as bad as people are making it out to be.

What's the limit in GBs?

For the grandfathered in 50mbps package (Which is now doubled to 100mbps for most people on the network) 5GB during prime time. So you get 5GB at 100mbps and then 50mbps for the rest of the night. Virgin raised the prices by a couple GBP per month as I recall, but every ISP has been raising prices lately anyways.

You really only get fucked if Virgin hasn't doubled your bandwidth yet, and you are still paying the same price. However, they have rolled out the upgrades to the majority of their network so if you aren't doubled yet call Virgin up and complain and they'll flip the switch to give you the increase.

What is interesting is that I think they have relaxed the policy in the past few days though. I was getting the 50% cut, but the past few nights i've downloaded a fuckload and haven't been seeing the cut.

Considering the *only* other option for most people in the UK for 50mbps+ service is BT Infinity - Virgin is still the better option IMO. With BT Infinity they will cap you once you reach 300GB for the month, and they cap you at 4Mbps. Thats fucking horrible if i'm paying for 100mbps service. I'd rather have at least 50mbps at all times, then be cut to 4mbps.

Another vote for Be Unlimited. I've been downloading, deleting, re-downloading Steam games as my HD space goes up and down. I've been torrenting a massive amount of stuff (1080p Elektra mkv? 11gb? Ummm... sure, why not. Very Happy ). They never capped me. Their routers suck, afaik, but you can buy another of them. I will say that the last time I looked at their new users deals, they did mention something about capping, but that was a good 3 or 4 years ago now.

*sadface*

I'm on their dirt-cheap £15 a month package, which is why I didn't know that. I don't give a monkeys if something takes ages to come down, long as they don't cap due to high usage.

Then again, a friend got a new connection and got the latest ep of Community in 2 minutes. Crying or Very sad

The point is that people are paying the same as they were on 50mbps though. So in the end you are still getting 50mbps, but with the added bonus of 100mbps outside of peak hours.

This isn't correct. On the 100Mb connection, VM only slow your speed for 5 hours in total if you download more than 20GB in between 10AM-3PM, or if you DL more than 10GB in between the hours of 4PM-9PM.
