How would 2148 make sense? 580's came with 1536 (1.5GB) out of the box and the number you were looking for is 2048?

Basically, there is no advantage over SB; actually runs a bit hotter, which kind of defeats the point of the shrink. Sure as hell not worth the extra ~70-80 EUR over a 2600K.

There's nothing wrong with eBay if you shop smart. Buying an expensive component from MrJoeyBloggs with a feedback of 2 isn't the smartest thing to do ... buying from a dealer with 43920 feedback, 99.2% positive, is hardly a risky venture.

SB and IB are names for Intel microarchitectures. The 930/920 are Bloomfield. SB introduced some optimizations that improve performance significantly.

I'm a long time ebayer and that seller seems fine, also replied few msgs quite fast so it shows communication is good. Mind you though, not all sellers are bad even if they have only several feedback points under their belt, at times it even shows better authenticity of the product they sell.

I must say however, there're odd occasions on ebay and that's why I never lose faith Laughing
Would you believe I got a titanium xfi for 50$ shipped? Laughing was pre-owned but totally brand new looking and working. A 100$ product abroad and 133$ if I bought it locally.

Oh please don't misunderstand, I'm not knocking low-rep sellers.. I'm simply saying that it's often less risky to buy from an established, well-repped and trusted, seller than a newbie who might be selling something that's -- as fuckit deliciously described -- pre-broken Very Happy

It also doesn't really matter in a deal like that. You're covered cause of two things:

1. Paypal
2. Shipping is done fast (so no weird delays) and with tracking. Also, for 40$ it must be insured so you will have all evidence in case you run into dispute with Paypal.

Fuck i5 poop. I need a fast machine for encoding and I need virtualization features. i5 is seriously lacking in those. Hyperthreading and VTd is enough to warrant the extra $ for i7.

The i5-2500k *has* VT-D. It's the old i5s that don't. Sadly no HT though, 4 cores and 4 threads only.

Damn, nevermind.. VT-X on the 2500k and, for bizarre reasons, non-K models of the i5 have VT-D. Sorry.

There are what's called "K variants" -- the K series are multiplier-unlocked, allowing for significant OCing, the non-K chips are locked and have very limited OC potential (and I do mean VERY limited)

The i5-2500 has VT-d and barely any OC potential, the i5-2500K can be massively OCed but only has VT-x.

Naw, the 2500T is multiplier locked, it's being sold mainly a "green" CPU -- with 50W less TDP than the 2500K/S. The only chips with K variants are the i7-2600 and the i5-2500. Anything below is multiplier unlocked. Think of the K chips as the Black Editions of the Intel family.

Like I said, IB isn't worth the price premium. So looking at models with HT and going for the top models without VT-d you get to the 3770K and 2600K for IB/SB respectively. Officially the 2600K is EOL, but here in NL I can actually still get that just fine, at 55 EUR less. They can reach the same clockspeeds (although SB will be slightly cooler doing so until you hit ~1.35v) and otherwise there's hardly any difference.

For models with VT-d it's a bit different, because the 3770 is actually coming in at just 5 EUR more than the old 2600 here. But like said before, they don't overclock. It's not that they overclock badly, they just don't. Period. All you can do on them is increase the Turbo limits and even that is very limited (400-500 MHz gain).

So what do you want Leo? VT-d or overclocking? That said, why do you want VT-d so badly? You don't have it now either and I don't think VMware even make use of it outside ESXi.

I want it because I can then setup my machine to actually run a hypervisor underneath and the Windows on top to be guest. With 16GB it is just so inviting, and gaming performance is ~ transparent. Fucking shit, I was not aware K models did not have VTd.

It is just retarded. I will take a look at LGA2011.
