It got a pretty solid score (8.2) from Gram.pl, one of polish sites. Pros: pirate atmosphere, interesting and dynamic combat, some nice graphics when it comes to locations, friendly interface, interesting use of firearms and body control skills/magic, big world, a lot of freedom and a good, fleshed out story. Cons: some bugs here and there, towns/villages are too small, bosses easy to beat, voodoo's too limited, bad animation during conversations.

Also, the reviewer claims the game is 100% fuild on a Q8300, GTX260 and 4 GB of ram.

I'm kinda hoping it'll turn out to be a good game, but I suppose we won't know until it actually hits. I purposefully avoided the beta, worrying it would spoil the fun.

Me Gusta Me Gusta Me Gusta

That's my rig, except for the GTX260 (HD6850) and that my Q8300 is running at 3.3GHz Smile

Hahaha, it sure as shit wasn't 100% fluid on my i5 and a 570... so yeah, that's some mighty optimisation from the beta then! Huzzah! Very Happy

Or the reviewer didn't specify what settings he ran the game on, might have been quite scaled back although I hope they optimized the game of course. Smile
(CPU is fine as I see it and the RAM whatever it is has 4 GB to spare and as it's a 32-bit game that's fine too, this will likely be mostly GPU bound however and a 260 is a bit dated by now.)

EDIT: Or he didn't specify "fluid" and meant ~30 FPS or such, that's also one possibility.

He wrote it was "pushed to the max", but I don't really know what fluid means in his case. It's usually a very subjective matter.

The beta indeed ran quite poorly even on powerful rigs, let's hope it's true. Smile

It's the same engine as the first Risen so in theory shouldn't be that demanding, we'll see

They added a variety of effects and such though and the lod is different with how instead of fading it kinda expands or turns as you move which is a bit odd when you notice it.
(It reminds me of those old sprite based games or simpler 2d based vegetation in certain games, which is still quite common but handled a bit better now.)

Then again it's several smaller islands instead of one large area and it (or at least the beta.) was fairly sparsely populated.

Things have been changed around a bit or simplified but it should hopefully be a fun game, will be released this Friday so there's not too much of a wait.
(Thought it was next Friday but I was wrong.)

It's actually the same engine since the first Gothic. It's the Genome Engine, which is PB's and they used it for all their games. It did change quite a lot over time though.

Wasn't one of the big features of Gothic 3 new engine?

Gothic 1 and 2 used Spacer, not Genome.

That was a different reviewer. The guys that wrote this review seems much better.

Did you read it? It's a pretty thorough look at the game's mechanics. Obviously it's one person's opinion, but it seems rather well-informed.

Well, I don't know for sure if it was called the same or not, but the engine build used in Gothic 3 was an evolution of the build used in the previous 2 games.

Yup, I read it earlier this morning and I found it indeed pretty exhaustive. He makes some good points and gives the impression to know what he's talking about (unlike many other reviewers out there) Razz . Though that 99% given to ME3 couldn't been unseen, especially considering that the site is called RPGFans Laughing

Hopefully we'll read our own reliable Humpreviews® in a few days, those should clarify everything Very Happy

Yeah. The 99% ME3 shit is unforgivable. But this dude's reviews (I glanced at his TW2 review and his Skyrim review) seemed pretty spot-on (in terms of my own sensibilities/responses to those games).

The things that worried me about the Risen 2 beta/demo thing (restrictive skill trees, stupid fetch quests, lack of general pirate-ness) seem to be main themes for the game if his review is to be trusted. I'll still get the iso demo though.

Can anyone confirm that the start of the beta version and the finished game are *completely* identical? That no quests have been added/changed in the final version?

heading over to the world of Risen forum , anyone got popcorn?

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Gamebanshee review by Brother None:
http://www.gamebanshee.com/reviews/107840-risen-2-dark-waters-review.html

It's rather comprehensive, totalling 6 pages in length, but it's worth a read since it goes through EVERY game element and mechanic. No score, but concludes on a note that Risen 2 is a "quintessential two steps forward, one step back title."

Best review so far, IMHO.
