I know the skill variants are a meaningful change for d2 pvp players, but saying diablo 3 is a "complex" game is a completely different story.
I beat diablo (1) seven times, diablo 2 like 13 times and i´m AWARE that the game is boring in nature (as all h&s games are) but i still play it because... because... i want shiny armor bitch lol, no really... i love blizzard games as well as h&s games, but only hardcore players will notice these variants in pvp. If an average starcraft 2 player beats the campaign and play some skirmishes vs AI, it´ll look like just a remake. On the other hand, hardcore players will inmediatly notice the difference in macro-economy, units and such.
I´m not saying d3 is a pos, but those variants people talk about are hardly innovative, they are different, just as starcraft 2 units. Gfx as I mentioned countless times are definitely not what I expected. I´m tired of seeing the blizzard engine being recycled over and over. It wasnt enough to make sc2 cartoonish, no no, they got to d3 in a way too.

Tried the beta with some pals, and to be honest, I'm not impressed. It's enjoyable enough in co-op and I kinda like the atmopsphere but there are way too many decisions the game makes for the player - like stats, or the fact that certain spells can only be bound to certain keys. It's kinda as if the devs were deciding for me what kind of spell/skill combinations I wanna use. Don't need that much handholding in a game, thank you very much.

Also, the difficulty level is absurd. Playing with 3 other players, and not a single one of us ever felt the need to use even one health potion. Hell, our WD didn't even loose a single zombie dog, unless he actually unsummoned them and switched to a different skill. And yes, I know it's probably going to be slightly tougher onward, and I know there's going to be nightmare and hell and whatnot - but having to finish a game once just so it can actually start to pose any kind of challange doesn't seem like a lot of fun.

Thank you!!! That's the other niggly thing that was bothering me but I couldn't put my finger on it; predetermined controls for spells/abilities. What if I want to use Fire Bats *and* Grasp of the Dead at the same time? FB on m1 and GotD on m2? I don't like how we don't even have that choice. In my game, FB was an m2 skill only, wasn't even available as an option for m1, likewise goes for GotD; m2 skill only and unselectable as m1.

Unless I've missed something and the choice IS there?

If you go into gameplay options you can enable "Elective Mode" which lets you bind any type of skill to any button.

There's also other usefull options in there, like showing damage numbers, health bars and showing advanced tooltips by default instead of having you hold control on mouse over.

Try out the Elective Mode.

Oh shi~t. Thank you! I didn't realise elective mode allowed you to switch controls, I thought it was only for arranging the hotkey skills for easier use. I didn't know it allowed you to select two primary or two secondary skills (Firebat/Grasp of the Dead are both Secondary). The open beta is over now so I can't test it, but thank you anyhow. That's a bit of renewed hope for the retail

Yea, thanks CoFran Smile Sadly, with OB ended I probably won't have any use for that info. Makes my impression of the beta slightly better though.

It does allow you to use two primary or two secondary skills. I also think you can put the same skill on MB1+2 with different runes for example.

But you can only use a maximum of 6 skills, propably because of balancing reasons.

You can have all primary/secondary skills if you want in keys 1,2,3,4 , but you cannot have the same primary/secondary skill with a different rune. Maybe they'll allow it later.

Ahhh, that makes more sense. Either way I'm actually pretty buzzed about knowing I can bind two secondary or two primary skills to m1/m2, that widens options significantly ^_^ Honestly, I thought it was "Here are the skills you can use on m1 -- and here are the skills you can use on m2. Have fun" and that was it. Knowing you can now properly mix and match, like every other aRPG, has certainly made it lot more enjoyable.

But I think you're fucked in the higher difficulties when using only skills of the same kind Very Happy

Son of a bitch! Why the hell isn't that on by default?! Can't believe I missed that. It's a major feature that totally changes playability. Sigh. Sad

I did check, I turned on most options (hate not seeing damage numbers, for instance) but from the description of Elective Mode, I thought it was basically just unlocking the positioning of skills, allowing you to move them along the quickbar. I didn't release it turned off the game limit of only having a certain selection of skills for m1 and other skills for m2.

My bad, I guess Razz

I think it's off by default so that casual gamers don't create inefficient builds that rapidly spend resources without properly replenishing them. The more experienced players still have a lot of room for experimentation though.

one of the reasons is off by default, is because the ui for elective mode is a bit awfull.
hope is work in progress, and it will be improved in release, or shortly after. in normal mode, works fine.
but in elective, you have to work to make it work how you want. never understod why they dont just put something like char builder from website + drag and drop.

Is there any way to determine the attributes of loot without first picking it up.

What the average latency of US players connecting to US servers before this stress test, I was averaging 200ms for the stress test but as its euro servers that I would connect to if I get the game their latency would more reflect what we in europe could expect.

I didnt spot the some of the stuff in the options either, apart from setting it up as a single player, but it was more from a case that I lost connection twice and when I got in the third time I just wanted to see what the world was like.

Does anyone else think that if you had 4 players in a crypt that it would be next to impossible to see what is going on once all 4 players and ai started throwing spells and attacking.

Artwork looks dark enough but kinda cartoony, i would have liked a more grimey look.

Also noticed the crypts repeating in terms of architecture, hopefully that doesn't carry all the way through and its more diverse. Do they have any random generated stuff for caves and the like or is it all set pieces as this would affect long term playability in the single player.
Same for the logs and casts - any chance they might have different variations of them.

All in all a good game, a master piece ? we will have to see.

So, I cleared through the beta with every character over the weekend... and to be honest, before playing I was going to chose the wizard first. But after playing each character, monk was the most fun for sure. Each punch just had so much 'oomph' just like with the Barbarian, however with teleport-like skills it was so much easier to be everywhere on the battlefield.

However, the last hours of beta I played wizard again with a friend and leveled her up to 13 and crafted lots of +int gear for her... and oh boy, wizard sure is fun when she is powerful. Also, she did not have any ranged AoE spells in the beta, which she will get later on with skills like Meteor or Blizzard... so I might still start with a wizard and endure the first 20 or so levels... which is exactly the same in d2, Sorcs suck untwinked for the first 3 acts.

Anyways, my life is dull, bland and without meaning now until D3 is released, thanks a lot Blizzard!

whoa.... be careful where you point those insults man, i'm as pissed off about variants replacing real RPG mechanics as you are.

and... diablo 2? boring? WTF? you kidding me? i still watch the 10 minute cutscenes everytime i beat it again, who said diablo 2 is boring? anything but!

All i´m saying is that H&S games tend to be boring in the long run, not just diablo. Clicking gets repetitive after a couple of years -or months, depends on your tolerance level.
