Hi

I was wondering if anyone is able to help me on this one as it seems my HP Compaq Presario CQ-61 220sn has died. It just will not power up.

I came home, it had crashed to black screen. My roomie told that he had turned the laptop on, it made it to windows boot screen and then crashed. So he just left it there like that.

I tried to shut it down by holding on the power button - it did nothing
Disconnected AC and battery, reconnected them and pushed the power button - it did nothing.

Tried removing the RAM and HDD - nothing changed.

First I though just the power button may be broken? But then I noticed that if the battery is not connected and I plug in the AC, the notification LED on the left side turns on and then turns off after about 5 seconds. If the battery is connected, and I plug in the AC, the notification LED doesn´t turn on at all. Also, "Battery charging LED" doesn´t turn on too.

So any thoughts? Some general power messup? AC broken? Just the power button failure?

Though I don't think the AC is the problem. As it was standing there, crashed, the cord was connected and my battery only lasts for like 10 minutes.

Honestly I´m lost here Sad

Nope, the problem will be the PSU Smile

A laptop has a small internal PSU so that it can use the outlet power and battery while switching between them or letting the battery charge etcetera. If you're not scared of opening it up, look up a disassembly guide (with HP you can usually find them on their support site) and take off enough so you can have a look at the corner where the AC enters. Do a visual inspection of that area, chances are that you'll see a broken (burned or partially melted) capacitor Smile

thank you guys! I actually started to disassemble it last night. will look at it tonight. can't deal with it atm, because I'm at work.

Thanks for the cooling tip also.

My laptop is over 2 years old.. so it would have been weird if it had lasted any longer (since it's HP)

for the future note, what brand would you recommend to buy?

Nah, ASUS/Dell laptops are quite spot on... though it depends in the end on what you want to do with your laptop

The upside to HP is that replacements part are easy to get. My mum's laptop had a fan break last year, so I ordered the exact same fan (literally the exact same model) from China for $7.something..including shipping Razz

Been running fine ever since!

The downside is that they're crap, along with Compaq (worst of the worst within the HP brand) laptops.

Very common to see the power brick go kaput after a few months of use.

I have a ASUS Ultrabook and i love it. 13.3 inch screen, 256gig SSD, i7 sandybridge, 4Gigs Ram and its the size of a MBA. It actually play skyrims quite nicely (mostly all on low but still)

Instant on is nice, but from completely off it has about a 8 sec boot time to win7.

My favorite laptop i have ever owned.

The second gen of these are coming out soon adding ivybridge, and back lit keyboard.

got home!
But I can´t acces the psu because I can´t get the screen off. Don´t have the right tools atm :S

Probably would be easier to buy a new and better one, than start repairing the old one.
Also thank you guys for the links.
ASUS sounds like a reasonable choice. It just has to run Star Wars The Old Republic decently for me. (do not care for ultra high graphics) Any other games I do not have for.

edit----
Asus K53E caught my eye. Would Intel Core i3-2310M paired with GT540M and 4GB ram be decent?
