K since everyone posting personal accomplishments I guess I'll do the same!

I finally got accepted to university!!!! I been trying for couple years now...i have two college degrees but because I started both in public college then switch to private to accelerate and finish them sooner they were not recognized by universities... Them not being accredited was something the private colleges conveniently forget to mention while charging 4 times the amount of public colleges...

Anyway universities were basically telling me to go back to public college and retake the exact same courses in which I had graduated with honors from before ( I.T degree and a law enforcement degree) but now after many letters to deans and coordinators, thousands of hours of volunteer service, reference letters and what not, they finally offered me acceptance!!!!! I have never had to work so hard to fork over money to people lol but I'm so happy regardless... I love justice studies and this course is only offered to cops and is accelerated so in 2.5 years I get a 4 year degree in criminal justice studies... Then a year to get my masters then on to PHD....

Anyway yay to me thanks for reading I know to most of u this is trivial so I understand if u think "pft woopdy fucking doo!"

I'd skip the PhD Mad_Max. Been doing it for 4 years and in my opinion it is a waste of time. Yeah yeah, I am solving cancer, advancing science etc etc.

But I am killing my chances in the job market. Can't stay at the university because there are almost no post-doc positions and I really don't want to beg for money constantly to be able to do some research. No company wants to hire me because the skills are too specialized and if they want to hire me, I'd have to continue what I am doing, but another 30 years or so.

So, I am looking for something in research which is not pure pure pure cancer research, and the PhD years are not counted as relevant experience. So basically I am just an old ass in the job market.

Baaaaah, back to designing mobile apps i guess. I heard some company got a whopping 1 bln ...

Explain me the difference between a college and university though... Here in Belgium we go to a university, do a bachelor, then do a master, then maybe do a PhD. But it's all in the same 'school'. Well not the same buildings, but it's the same organisation. Almost no paper work. As long as u have *some* bachelor degree which is relevant of course, you can start a masters. So you can start a masters in biochemistry with a bachelor in biology, provided you go through some transitionary program of 1 year to catch up on the important courses. So it's all very flexible (a bit too flexible in my opinion though).

I mostly need the masters or PHD for teaching position... My area of study is much less specialized but I'm far far away from thinking of PHD

Lines between college and university in Canada are quickly becoming really blurred... It was before that u needed really good marks to get into uni which took u 4 years to get a bachelor of arts degree in... College was much easier to get into, was sort of looked down upon however I liked it since it was at most 2 years and topics were much more focused on what u needed to do on the field... More hands on I suppose? People said college let u earn much less than uni... Now people from college get out there quicker with less debt and find a job maybe not as high of an income but they are working sooner and landing jobs easier... University grads come out with tons of Debt and usually don't land any job and if they do it's nothing related to their field or not nearly as much as they thought they would make!

Also now colleges and universities are mixing... Tons of courses in college are part of a bigger university program so let say u do 6 months of college then upgrade to university and such,

Damn, this college stuff is confusing in many countries. Laughing In Poland it's as simple as you can get.

You get elementary school, 6 years, you end it with an exam.

Then you go to junior high school, 3 years, and end it with an exam, depending on how it goes you get points; you apply for high schools by yourself and if you have enough points you become a student of that particular high school.

Then you have high school, 3 years, you end it with a "matura" (high-school leaving exam). Again, you score points, and then you apply for universities, if you score enough you become a student.

Depending on your degree, you may either end your university education with "licencjat" ( It is typically a three or four year degree, equivalent to the bachelor's degree in Anglo-Saxon countries. ), or magisterium (a master's degree, usually 5 years).

THEN after you finish your magisterium, you can enroll on additional courses to become a doctor (PhD).

First off, congrats MAX_MAX. Sorry to hear you got sucked into the private college trap. Situations like that should be persecuted for fraud >Sad

@spankie: PHD students in the USA are in the exact same boat. It ain't pretty =/ Also, in USA College = University. Nobody really differentiates in between the two words, and they're used interchangeably. If you want to be picky about it, I currently attend The University of California at Irvine, Donal Bren school/college of Computer Science. So a college is technically a part of a University, but like I said nobody cares here. We just call them the same thing Wink

Don't forget there are also so called "Institutes". Mine is New York Institute of Technology and they have campuses in China, Vancouver, India too

Funny thing you mention. Our Computer Scienice degree is not Accredited by that silly accreditation board..school won't get it for another 1-2yrs. feel bad for all those people getting their degrees :/ While companies probably won;t care but good luck getting into Masters program

Not like my advice means all that much, but I have an MSc and that seems to be a pretty good spot for job prospects ... educated enough to get a good job but not a PhD with your own research agenda unable to work on corporate projects.

So yeah... fuck PhD Smile
