Cos its not always your personal opinion. Sometimes you clearly say what you've read or heard about something.

Dunno, I guess to just make it clear they are not staing a fact, its just their opinion. IMO anyway.

Yes, apparently. People have a hard time dealing with opinions differing from their own. It's just an attempt to hammer into their little minds that just because I say something that they don't agree with, does not mean I'm attacking the core essence of their being and self identity. People are retarded like that.

To clearify what I mean - what you write is not always your own opinion. So thats why you sometimes decide to put imo after what you've written.

Edit: I was gonna type a couple of examples...but I realized that I can't be arsed.

I agree completely, and I don't generally post "imo" or even worse "imho" (if you don't regard your opinion as important, don't write it at all).
And yet people would insist to take my word as if I was stating a fact and would argue with me. Laughing

I used to have this in my sig to mitigate the damage:

Quote:
Disclaimer: Posts written by me are my views, ideas and opinions only, and should not be taken as facts, unless stated otherwise!

Same reason people say "no offense". It lessens the impact of their words, to avoid getting backlash.

Now that sounds like I'm stating a fact from some psychology book I've read. But I'm not, so IMO.

You don't automatically assume this?

Person: This game sucks! imo!

He needed to say imo for people to understand? Is this how conversations in real life go for some people? It seems very foreign to me

Person: This game sucks! imo!

well its the internet and when you say something on it people take it you heard it from some one it was crap ... so by adding imo you add this was your opinion and not someones

A: this game is crap
B: Metacritics thinks the same
A: yeah but imo none of those reviewers wrote if they would fix the controls this game would be GOTY
C: but i like it but imo it looks like a ps2
A: dazz STFU
B: yeah

Articles make bibliography references when they are quoting or paraphrasing someone.

Forum users use IMO when there's doubt between opinion and fact. I don't see what's the big fuss is about.

I do think it's overused, but I also think it has its uses. It's definitely needed in one form or another. (Either quote someone, either list a source when stating something someone else said, but in most cases it's easier to do it the other way around and write IMO when there's doubt)

And don't get me wrong obviously you can't compare forums to articles. On forum it's just used to lessen the impact on your words, because maybe you don't want to get called out on your post, and maybe you don't feel like explaining. It's usually hard to argue with someones opinion.

I think I said it best the first time.

Quote:

I'd read that as a fact, or at least as a bold statement. Either way I might call the person out on it. If he had included IMO it's unlikely I would mention it. The poster in this case sounds arrogant to me.

But maybe that's just me.
