I don't think you could fund alpha protocol 2 with kickstarter.
a 3d game like that would take too much money and time for it's assets like models and textures.

Why excited? Obsidian is an average mainstream developer, none of there games except fallout las vegas (in my opinion though) truly delivered. Kickstarter is for indie developers for niche games that otherwises don't get funded, I don't see obsidian starting such a project. Also, a company like obsidian has overhead (staff not directly needed for production), they need millions to develop a game, they will never reach that goal.

After Brian Fargo's claim that buggy games are the fault of poor publisher QA rather than the developer, it will be interesting to see how Obsidian handles everything on their own. As for needing millions to create a game...this could just be a smaller side project with a few employees working on it. If they advertise it as something like "old school RPG in the tradition of Planescape: Torment" they will surely bring in a ton of pledges.

echoing a comment posted on the vg24/7 site and going slightly off on a tangent here.. I think it would be great to see this project take off and for a large developer such as Obsidian to deliver a decent game. Potentially it's the future for an industry that is steadily going stale with every game release looking and playing like every other game... games that are made just to satisfy a marketing departments demands and motivated purely by financial gain only.

What better way for gamers to support the developers then to have them fund it themselves.
So that we may start seeing more and more games that are made with some measure of passion again, which is not just another identi-kit first person shooter.

Developers often quote they often can't really deliver the type of game they would really like to make because of time-constraints or because of a publishers demands. It would be nice if this upcoming game could be just the start and part of something that could change this trend.

Now THIS is interesting! Aside from their hellishly buggy nature, ObsEnt make some incredibly good games! I'll back any kickstarter they throw up.

Kickstart seems to be pretty useful, might support this too depending on what they announce. Smile
(As above usually the games are pretty solid but have a few technical flaws.)

A quick look at wikipedia:

"On March 14th, 2012, Obsidian cancelled a "future next gen project", resulting in the layoff of approximately 20-30 employees both from that project and the upcoming South Park: The Game team."

"Wheel of Time (in development)[17] (Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)"

So probably, wheel of time is canceled, the're desperate and try kickstarter as last resort.

What I consider a future next gen project is something for the Xbox "720" loop etc.
I don't think they'd give up on the Wheel of Time RPG so easily.

But putting all that aside...
OBSIDIAN KICKSTARTER YES !!!!
Just thinking of what they could do without needing a publisher's backing gives me chills of excitement Smile

I envy you're excitement.
For me obsidian hasn't deliverd a true classic, great RPG after 9 years of trying, this can't be blamed on publishers alone. They failed, bankruptcy serves them Twisted Evil
I just don't think kickstarter is meant to fund a company in trouble.

I'll have to wait and see if Obsidian can actually release a technically stable and finished game that isn't watered down and called Dungeon Siege 3.

Why would I like them? They didn't make a single game that I can say I enjoy. I have to try Alpha Protocol again though.

Right now Obsidian is my favorite existing studio, the fact that someone who claims to like rpg's dislike them I find baffling beyond comprehension.

That's that NWN2 expansion, right? I never played it, since I don't like NWN2. And I don't mean the content or anything like that... it's simply the core of the game that bothers me. I'm not really a fan of party-based RPGs either... actually it's more that combined with isometric camera that I'm not a fan of, since I used to really like games like M&M6 (I think that's the one I really loved years ago, but then again, I also really liked Icewind Dale back then). I think this is also the reason why I found Dragon Age such an average game, even for this day. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate any of those (and I don't hate Obsidian either if that's what it seemed like), but they're not really my thing.

Edit: Oh, I forgot about KotOR II. Well, I guess there is a game made by Obsidian about which I can say I enjoyed. It seems you guys understood that I hate them. As I said, I really don't. I just don't like them, they're just "a developer" for me.

There isn't a single game from Obsidian I haven't thoroughly enjoyed.
Even DS3 was great, although I admit,it could have been better.

I think obsidian gets too much hatred due to buggy games...as if no one else delivers buggy games(coughbethesdacough).

Which reminds me,I have to play alpha protocol again. Razz
