I have lots of free time now, and I want to play a good stealth game!

So far I've played

All Splinter Cells
All Thief games
All Deus Ex games (well, you can play them stealthily, so... Very Happy )
All Assassin's Creed games
All Hitman games

They don't have to be TPS/FPS games though, I might have missed some isometric stealth games or something...

Ah, forgot about Death to Spies, played all of them, excellent stealth game. Smile

Played Alpha Protocol, Saboteur, Velvet Assassin and Chronicles of Riddick as well.

I never really got into Commandos games, but then again I was really small back then and I barely knew English Laughing

Neon, do yourself a favor, and play the Commandos games now. You can tweak the resolution nicely. Really worth it. Another great example, of how great games used to be.

there arent many stealth games left unfortunately Sad

Dark Messiah has stealth elements
Hidden & Dangerous 1 & 2 outdated shit but good stealth
Prison games:
Prisoner of War (that ones good and barely known)
The Great Escape game has some stealth but its only enjoyable if you know the movie
the crappy Prison Break game

or you fire up a PS2 emulator and play some MGS

All Assassin's Creed games

how are they stealth? Just cause you can go into incognito mode whenever and they magically somehow never see you?

yeah have to agree with you here, AC series doesn't qualify as "stealth" in my opinion, i know, i hated them all but the first, but... who can blame me really and the third was by far the worst, more of a soap opera than a game really.

oh and since someone mentioned it, how was MGS guns of the patriots or whatever it was called?
that's one of the few series i was almost tempted to be a lol wut to play.

MGS isn't really a stealth series. it's espionage. It doesn't matter if you get caught or not... you just shoot and follow the story. Splinter Cell 1 and 2 were more about stealth. Hitman weren't really stealth games either. according to this http://www.listal.com/pc/stealth/1 nolf is also a stealth series. Laughing

Long ago there was this... stealth game on the pc and consoles.. it started with you trying to escape... a pow camp... ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_of_War_(video_game) \o/ that was a fun little stealth game. There's also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadly_Dozen which when it came out was plauged with crysis like AI. But it was a fun little tactical shooter. Enjoyed it a lot.

for true stealth... Deer Hunter series Devil Troll
second sight has some stealth moments

of course you're not forced to use stealth in MGS series, that's always a sign of developer incompetence if theres only one rigid method to progress at any point, sure you can argue that it doesn't matter if you get caught or not and it really doesn't but at least in the original skulking around in the shadows or under cardboard boxes was a really fun and exhilarating approach to dealing with the enemies, it shows that the developer put a lot of thought into the game mechanics that you could slither around in your cardboard shell of godhood or just spaz out violently and how you manage to harm others in your death throes.

nowadays games with stealth mechanics rarely have so much thought put into them and when stealth is a primary mechanic the solution is nearly always "oh i know, how about you die instantly if anyone even thinks about noticing you" deus ex HR i'm looking at you...

i found sc games more stealth than mgs. mgs isn't a bad game at all. i just never experienced difficulty in completing stages and segments. I found it very easy to do certain things once you got ahold of the controls. but other than that, if you fail more than once you just should give up Laughing stealth seemed to be the easiest part of those series. Stealth in early sc games felt rewarding and it had a sense of challenge.

Splinter Cell 1-4 is basically the definition of stealth, there is nothing that comes remotely close to it imo.
And dont forget that Splinter Cell 4 for Xbox/PS2/GC and Splinter Cell 4 for X360/PS3/PC are essentially completely different games, that makes for 5 fully fledged SC stealth games.
Too bad there is no good xbox emulator out there, so theres no real way yet to play Double Agent the way it was intended by Ubisoft Montreal. (next gen ver. was developed by Ubi Shanghai) I havent tried the GC/PS2 versions tho, they have no bump mapping and shitty lighting but emulators are out there.

Hitman is my other fav out there, but the feel is completely different, hiding in plain sight, nothing feels more powerful than that.
For all that derping down that awaits us in Absolution, I cannot wait to see it in action. (and the amazing crowd system)
