That happened in Baldurs Gate too (No comparison from current gen RPG's, or how to say it.) from what I remember, could kill this certain Drow only to find him alive again in the sequel.
(It was years ago but wasn't the line something like "Didn't I kill you?" - if you did not import a character the game let you choose from different possible outcomes instead - including the above - and lead the dialogue from there.)
I suppose they wanted something similar here, or rather they tried to fix something albeit it didn't really work out that well.
(Had Leliana been stabbed in a conversation option - kinda like a later DA:O DLC with Morrigan - it would have been more believable that she'd survive, still not a good answer of course, could have been handled much better.)
(Had they made it a in-game sequence it could be any of the companions and not just Leliana for example and on who's behalf they acted for.)
(Dragon Age 2 however is a bit more difficult to fix and that above isn't the only issue, same with Mass Effect 2 but there it was handled better, probably as a result of more available development time.)
EDIT: Anyway barring any bugs hopefully savegame importing is done in a better way here.
(Like that bug in ME1 which assumed you hit Conrad, had to use a save-editor to adjust that when such a save was imported into ME2.)
Of course then there's that little thing with Wrex or Garrus for one example if they survived or not.
(I mean mostly from the demo here in which they were featured depending on what choices you did during that first mission - which is one part of the prologue - but also in regards to other events in Mass Effect 3, wonder how they handled that.)

Bioware's community moderator confirmed that dead characters remain dead /except Shepard /. That's why there are Jersey Shore recruits, if you import a save with bad ending, there aren't enough crew members...
If I'd play this game, then my first priority would be to try and snuff the Jersey Shore characters. I actually liked Ashley in ME1 (I know, I know, I'm in the minority here), but I swear it, her lips are just asking for an axe in the face.
New review from a polish magazine PSX Extreme - they gave 9/10. They said it has the longest plot of all 3, and that it is a one of the best RPGs in years.
The main flaw they mention is the slightly archaic engine. The strongest parts are the plot, variated gameplay and overall epicness.
So he have finally made it into Biowere? Great, because this one image presenting Legion holds more epicness itself than whole Mass Effect series. Besides, I love its cyber-punk vibe.
