seems pretty good for a f2p. Restrictions are only about some chat channels and trade it seems.

I used to play Aion when it was pay to play. Got a lvl 35 or 36 gladiator. I haven't really played it since like 2010, I mostly stopped due to grind and stuff. Though now they say F2P model will reduce the grind and add new stuff, so might be worth checking out.

I never understood why are people always waiting for a "WoW killer" It won't happen. Only WoW can kill itself. It's the biggest mistake some devs make, when making an MMO, they're trying too hard to "kill" and compete with WoW. WRONG. That cannot happen, so instead, they should just focus on making a good, unique MMO that will have it's own audience, and not compete it with WoW and trying to top WoW's success. Besides, why would anyone care for a "WoW killer" MMO, I don't see a reason why WoW needs to be topped. It's success has no affect on any of us, you are not forced to play it if you don't want to.

I agree with Hawk here. Plus, when I played MMOs I was very grateful for WoW for one good reason: kept the kids hooked, so they didn't spoil my community. Worked out great.
My next MMO will be the Secret World, and I already know, that kids won't like it: it's not shiny enough, not easy enough, you have to think (that's like the bane of most WoW players).

Devs aren't idiots. You don't throw million of dollars to take a shot at killing WoW.
It's all marketing. There are a lot of WoWhaters or WoWplayers who have been playing to long and looking for something new, and how do you get their attention? By selling your product as a WoWkiller, by providing an alternative themepark MMO without drastique changes.
So I think you take the term "WoWkiller" a bit too literally.
I know a lot of ppl around me who don't want to try out WoW, simply because WoW is associated with the "no-life" stigma. But they do buy all kinds of other MMOs like Guildwars, Aion, Warhammer Online, KotoR etc.
WoW is a lot of fun, but yes, it gets boring or frustrating after a year or two. Hell, most MMOs can call themselves lucky if they can keep the attention for more than half a year.

What a ridiculous thing to say.
But then, you get that in every MMO; people who think they are better than "the kids" but at the same time are even more annoying than them. I resubbed to Lotro atm and the amount of WoW bashing that goes on there is astounding, particularly seeing as the game is trying to copy every single feature from WoW these days.

Just made an account and waiting for servers to go up. I'm kinda confuzzled by one thing though... why is it called beta? I thought Aion launched ages ago.

That should be obvious. But they present it as a WoWkiller, stating what is wrong with the current MMO themepark model, if you watch the developer walkthroughs, what they are essentially saying is whats wrong what WoW and how they are going to do it different.

Do all communities have equal amounts of dicks and kids? Nope, and I hardly heard anyone ever try to make a case for that argument. That means some games have more kids. So, do you think harder games like EVE or completely hand-holding games like WoW have more kids? Right, thought so.

The percentage of kids playing a game is irrelevant to (at least my) enjoyment of a game. Personally I'd rather play with kids if they know how to play and act alright than "mature" adults who can't think straight because their neglected newborn is screaming while they desperately try to tank an instance. And EVE, to use your own example, has plenty of dicks, because half the fun comes from being a dick to your fellow player and the game encourages such behavior.
Scoff at WoW all you want, but I've met plenty of good and reliable players there which made ignoring the kid population quite easy.
Not to mention the entire addon- and theorycrafting community which thrives in WoW, but is all but absent in other games because of lack of support on the game's side and lack of actually knowledgeable players.

Games like Eve I can understand. But Secret World doesnt seem to be any different from mainstream games. Altho it has a darker theme it is still a kiddy artstyle, much like diablo 3 but worse. I see teenage girl characters on the frontpage of secretworlds with ridiculous fashion clothing and make up.
So your point that Secret World won't attract many kids is kinda void. The only reason the majority of the playerbase wont be kids is if Secret World has a bad marketing team.
I am quite interested tho, gameplay seems to be quite unique.

Is there any video that shows this hard combat and the reason you need to think more than other MMOs? All gameplay I've seen, even if very little, has looked like the standard MMO fare.

Exactly. The only thing that seemed unique and cool is the skill advancement system, but the 7 active skills limit renders it void, since a typical character will have to be as complicated as your average console action game.

Aion for me would be fine for reaching end game pvp etc, but the stores and bots all over the place make it hard to even get there for me.. But I did really like the look and feel of the crafting stuff.. Although I am guessing that plays no part in progression of ur toon now?
Anyone here give a rundown of the different aspects of the game how they are today?

People getting defensive as usual? Just asking for some proof of this since it's not in any video I've seen.

while i dont see the need for it, many f2p games are on steam, including most mmo's. So i dont see why not.
