This game was recently make F2P and put on steam so I thought I would give it a try. Set in a post-apocalyptic setting, I think it is sandboxy and most things are crafted, and there are no classes so you can train whatever skills you like.

Anyone played it? What do you think? I have only played it for about 80 minutes but it seems promising.

I am liking all these games going F2P.

What is there to like? Sure, it seems impressive at first, but if you wish to play more than a few hours, you realize you have to churn crazy amounts of cash $$$ or invest huge amounts of time to grind (and not all game offer that).

I was in the Alpha many moons ago.

Being in the Alpha ruined it for me.

Probably should give it a try because it was the Alpha so that sort of thing was expected but you know

It's a good MMO. Unpolished but complex and interesting. Also FPS style combat is rare to see in a MMO so that's a big plus.

I played it for a few months, and I've planned on coming back, but haven't gotten around to that yet.

? It's certainly better than having to pay right off the bat.

No. Because there is almost always a X-day trial which is enough to show you if you'd like or not a game. Try EVE Online for 14 days and you'll know if you should or should not pay for a subscription which gives you access to everything. With F2P games, in most cases, players end up paying a lot more monthly than a subscription. That's why you have all these F2P crapfests on PC and iOS.

Most F2P games offer subscription in which case you get everything as if it wasn't F2P. So at most you will pay as it was a normal subscription MMO (Ones I can remember Age of Conan, Star Trek Online, Fallen Earth). So you're wrong.

Most games? No. Most games that started as P2P - maybe, and not even that. AZN influence of retarded (but economically sound) model are taking hold of western development (aka what used to be "normal").

I actually found the Fallen Earth F2P model to be very well done. You have access to ALL the content, no limits. Every class, skill, every area or quests, anything that's in the game can be accessed by a free account.

The limits are basically how much cash you can hold at the same time, how many characters you have, customer support, and you gain experience at a slightly lower rate than the original game. (75%). You can also only craft 8 hours a day.

When I played, I didn't feel like I hit any wall where I had to pay to keep progressing, or to enjoy the game (like is the case with most F2P games).

I did get bored of the game anyway tho, it simply felt like I was spending all of my time grinding materials to craft new stuff. The combat wasn't terribly fun either.

I like the atmosphere of the game and wanted to like it, but boring combat + uninteresting grind (which could easily be made more fun) = I decided to stay away. It did interest me enough to consider going back eventually tho.

Well another point is that even subscription based MMOs have item stores, even EVE online. To me that brings the F2P and P2P very close, with one big exception that no one forces you to pay in F2P.

I haven't tried Fallen Earth model yet, but I've played AoC and STO for a while(months) and haven't had a need to buy anything yet.

@Kanint
The point of grinding in F2P games is to be as boring as possible, so people buy improvements instead of grinding. They have no interest in improving it. Take NFS World; you can either race for two months so you earn 1,500,000 credits to buy a Lamborghini or Veyron, or you can put a 20$ "investment" and get an improved version instead. Which is more attractive to most players you think?

Or just pirate NFS Undercover ffs - it's the same shitty engine, with more cars and you get them all for free.

This! It's ruining the MMO-Market as we know it.
MMO's in the Past: Enough content that keeps you entertained & willing to pay a sub
MMO's in the Future: "Wtf is this shit, bless god they dont charge money for it....oh shiny new thing in the Itemshop, instabuy"

I tried it briefly, maybe an hour and it was actually quite nice. I don't know how it is later on or if there is too much grind though. I can't stand grindy games.

I like F2P because I can jump in and out, take breaks if I want to and don't feel as if I am wasting money. I don't have to cancel my sub and resubscribe etc etc. Also the fact is that because the games are F2P, I am much more willing to try out ones that don't look amazing, or try them without much research. I have played all major MMOs from UO and EQ onwards, I am very used to subscribing but the simple fact is that MMOs are fairly boring to me now and subscribing feels like I am shackled into the game.

I bought SWTOR, and quit before my month was up. I felt obliged to play, and when I didn't feel like it I cancelled so I don't get charged again.

F2P models are not perfect but they give us more flexibility to try them and play multiple MMOs without subscribing, it also seem to be reviving a lot of flagging games that are not AAA+ titles. There is no way I would have tried Fallen Earth or STO for instance if they were still subscription games.

yeah i agree the game is pretty unique. decent graphics, some revolutionizing choices.
except that it's unplayable, it's a pretty good game to play with your buddies for a while.

i've tried to play some with my brother - given up after 15 minutes. The server is swamped, and the lag is huuge.
gotta wait some till the hype cools down;)

you should try APB though, also from gamersfirst ( if didn't already ) - although only appreciated when playing with a friend. Otherwise i won't guarantee you'll stick around.
just spent 7 hours straight with my brother. Which was kind of surprising to me as I am a pretty demanding player ( being a no-life has it's downs, after you've played x000th game in your life you get pretty picky )

I tried it. There is a lot to like about this Fallen Earth. What killed it for me was a quest where I pick up a quest item off a table and five guys 'appear' in the room behind me firing away. It felt extremely canned and ruined immersion. That and also the absurdly short respawn times that make it difficult to loot bodies and escape before the respawn. I'll play it again some day.

Ok, but you're not forced to buy things, you can play the game as it is. Personally I didn't spend a dime to buy anything in these F2P games and had fun at the same time. And then, most of the times, very few people stick with such kind of games for a long time, it's very rare, at least for what I know. Most people prefer subscription based MMO games, like myself.

You don't know that and, IMO, I think you are wrong. Also, in the near future, if you prefer this model, probably you won't have any MMO around to play, as the subscription model is slowly going to the grave. Why?

Because of 2 simple things:

- the practical aspect: f2p with microtransactions can be* equally profitable for producers/pub.
- the psychological aspect that is more complex than my description actually: f2p gives the player a most precious freedom to NOT be constrained anymore to play a game because he has paid for it (forcing a value into it's investments) and also allows him to make plenty of choices concerning the eventual microtransactions.

can be* - there's a whole discussion about this but no point in getting into it now...

What's the state of this? Are there people playing? Is it worth getting into?

I played it a bit earlier and enjoyed it, even if it's pretty unpolished game. Reason why I don't see myself coming back is that it seems it's hardly being updated anymore.

I really have no idea of late, I played it for a long time when it was sub and then a little after it changed hands. It was still ok for me at that time but I had already got a ton of skills etc under my belt so not sure if the f2p is hindered.

I liked the setting, wish or not sure if they have already now updated anything like the engine or graphics etc etc.
