Boatmurdered
A succession LP of DF done on the Something Awful forums back in the days when the game didn't even have Z-levels yet.
Read it, enjoy it, bask it in it's insanity.
Yep, pretty much one of the best LP reports out there.

Also, don't forget another, more recent classic.

That is wonderful.

I had a similar experience with a giant crab that emanated a poison gas cloud. My warriors were somewhat more ready to fight, but the gas was a deciding factor in what would otherwise have been a war of attrition.

Best fight I ever had in adventure mode was with that mod I was talking about earlier, started getting chased by raptor wyrms or summat, smaller dragons that stalk in 3's, and nearly got caught before I ran upon a group of 12 brook trolls. I let them sort out their differences from the periphery, keeping the fight even with an occasional cheap shot from the rear.

Right, how could I have forgotten Bronzemurder, which is less insane than Boatmurdered but hilarious nonetheless xD

Now you're just arguing semantics. Getting fucked in the ass with a broom stale is an "improvement" over getting stabbed in the eye with a fork Rolling Eyes

I enjoy Dwarf Fortress quite a bit, but I've never really found it as "hard" as some people make it out to be.
It can be cumbersome to manage, that's why we have stuff like Dwarf Therapist, and a pain to look at, so god gave us tile mods, but if you don't play it intentionally stupidly, it should be easy not to lose it.

If you pick a reasonable starting spot, it isn't hard to set up farms, wells, and start making mugs. My first priority after food is always trying to make sure I have most work shops and all the things needed for various moods. About the only thing that can set off a well maintained fort is an insane dwarf who can't find the cat bones that he desperately wants.
A couple of draw bridges will protect you from any crazy sieges (which become more annoying than dangerous)

yeah dwarf fortress is only as hard as you want it to be.

you can be perfectly safe if you wish to be, by using drawbridges and similar stuff as crossmr said.
I never do that stuff though, because it'd be too boring if everything goes perfectly.

to get a good game of dwarf fortress you should go out of your way to allow crazy shit to happen.
ie don't start in areas with abundant resources, start in areas with an aquifier, don't wall off your fort in the case of a siege, meet besieging armies head on with your military, etc

df is just most fun when shit hits the fan, especially when you have someone to tell that story to after you're dead Smile

That could be interesting if it didn't take so long to get back to the point where I'd want to experiment with that kind of stuff. I've built up my militia enough that I'd go out and fight some sieges. I trained up so that I had like 3 squads of 3 legendary dwarfs. goblins and stuff show up, I'd go and slaughter them. The most I lost was the guard dog I tied up to warn me of thieves.

You can make it very hard. You pick a place with no river, no water at all, and have to live on rain water. Get a place with no flux, or some other really crappy stuff. You could make it a total nightmare and start in some highly evil place with no water, flux, and randomize your load out or something if you wanted.

The only issue I have with that, is that you're essentially setting yourself up for failure.

It's one thing to say "let's make things a little harder" but in a situation like that if you leave yourself without something essential, at some point you're going to enter the depression spiral as one too many dwarves in a strange mood don't get what they want and then spiral out of control.

Just for you Surray I decided to play a harder map... but even playing a harder one it's more annoying than it is hard.
The new vampires are broken.
There is no real way to identify and deal with them in game.
By the time you know you have a vampire problem, it's too late. They've probably killed a very important dwarf in the game. Even dealing with them is broken. You can convict them of murder, but if they get a beating, they'll heal instantly, put in jail? they'll kill as soon as they get out. Killing them rarely happens.
The best you can do is restrict them to a burrow outside and wall them in.

Kids seem to be broken in this edition as well, the birth rate is ridiculous, and people are reporting huge percentages of kids in forts resulting in several issues.

The map I took was a mountain, with no river, no aquifier, and apparently no iron, also like 3 trees and barely any vegetation.

Even still, I got 250 dwarves and food coming out of my backside.
The only major issue was that of my 3 main military dwarves, one was a vampire, who then killed the other one leaving me with one decent fighter.
Even on duty the vampire would wander off and slaughter people, ignoring orders.

I've had several important jobs people killed off by the vampires. The risk vs ability to manage is way off here. It takes a long time to skill up a dwarf and then the vamp just comes out of nowhere and kills them instantly and there is nothing you can do about it.

Not very "Fun" even for DF.

This version is barely playable in my eyes. hopefully there is a quick version update, because I found the playability of the previous version to be much higher than this.
