People expect 4096x4096 textures, that's why. If a game is below 10GB, it'll automagically look like shit.

It's a bit vague how big the game world really is in Risen 2. In one of the later interviews they say something like they've learned from their previous titles and almost made the game as big as Gothic 3.. which could mean it's almost as big or that they decided to take a step back and not do a Gothic 3 again (which was big but a bit empty). It's not uncommon for devs to twist their words like that, see Two Worlds II Wink

In a IGN preview they say that each of the 3 islands are smaller in size than Risen 1, but on the whole it's bigger than Risen 1 (which was kind of small imo).

They said it would be larger than Gothic 2 world, which was decent size for my taste. If they manage to fill it with interesting content number of square kilometers it covers hardly matters.

Yeah, you travel between the big islands with your ship, but that happens through the only loadings in the whole game. From what I understood they even masked those with some short cinematics. They don't want to give players control of the ship because they don't want to turn this into a pirate simulator or some thing like that (kind of what Age of Pirates is).

The chapter system in Gothic 2 was great imo, every chapter repopulated the world with new montsers and opened up new areas. I don't like big huge gameworlds in which you can aimlessly wander. Even RPGs need a little linearity to tell a proper story.

Yeah, that system was good, but honestly I don't prefer that or the extreme openess like in Gothic III. Either is just as good for me. Maybe my mind will be changed when the Community Story Project for Gothic III will be out. That will introduce chapters back into Gothic III and it actually has the main purpose of making the game in general more like the first 2 games.

http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1112628-NEWS-Risen-2-%C2%93beta-test%C2%94-starting

The "beta test" will start on February 20th and it will end on March 2nd. It will be available for those who bought the Collector's Edition of the first Risen game (as promised back then). I would ask for an access code, but whoever has one would probably use it for himself. Still, if anyone has one and doesn't want it, I would gladly take it. Smile Also, this will probably be the chance for the old PB fans to get what we want, at least as options (like a disabled travel system or on oldschool one in which we have to find teleporter stones and use those instead of a single click on the map and other stuff like this; maybe a classic option for the health bar of the enemy?).

New previews:

http://www.destructoid.com/preview-swashbuckling-and-rum-drinking-in-risen-2-221630.phtml

Quote:
Reloading the save and talking to the drunkard further also opened up the idea of using voodoo to get my way, an option available because the nameless hero had sided with the natives prior to my hands-on. I went to talk to Butch, distracted him, and pilfered a strand of bead hair. With it and a few other items, I made a voodoo doll, which I then used to assume direct control of Butch and bark orders at the filthy layabouts to load water onto my ship.

Depending on how your stance, you'll be pleased or annoyed to hear that Risen 2 definitely does no hand-holding. There's no mystical trail you can summon to direct you to a quest location, no beacon on some clearly visible map. In Risen 2 you listen to dialogue sequences carefully, remembering what you hear and parsing out where to go from there. You can always go into your journal and read transcripts for clarification, but the intention is for you to have fun figuring it out. You're a hero, and we all know heroes don't let things be done for them. Or something.

Speaking of taking control of other characters in the game: One of the interesting mechanics at play in Risen 2 is the use of helper monkeys. Not the kind of helper monkeys handicapped people need, (although you do wear an eyepatch), but one that will help you steal and murder. If you choose the monkey ability in game, you take control of your pocket primate and use him/her to get into tiny places in which your fat pirate ass would not be able to fit. If you were in jail, say, you could send your monkey outside of the cell to grab the jailer’s key. Monkeys can also be used as dungeon recon – send your subhuman pal into a dungeon and he can check out where the bad guys are and let you come up with a plan.

Has there been any other pirate themed rgps?
I can't think of any but it seems a great theme for the genre, hidden treasure, mythical beasts, black magic and the like

I'm now imagining Uncharted, but with pirates
