Child's Play... that name is present on almost 99% of these indie bundles. Why is this specific charity so popular?

1 and 2 are still amazing.

It's set up by gamers/comic artists to deliver toys/games to children in hospices and hospitals around the world.

cause everyone who makes indie games has asperger's syndrorme and think giving video games to terminal children is more important than giving to research cures for their diseases

~edit~

Whoa, never mind.. looks like CP really *is* the only charity. Oh well - that's still fine by me, it's not like Marie Curie Foundation or Salvation Army don't already get billions.

Thanks for the info Sabin. So the people behind Child's Play are the Penny Arcade comic creators. Now I've seen everything.

Both can't exist in the world? Child's Play is the only major charity of it's type. Most of the major diseases people face today already have multimillion dollar organizations raising money for research.

You seem to be upset that people should be giving more to cure diseases, and you mention asperger's. Thus, I'm going to conclude that you're just mad because you have it, and you're mad because they haven't found a cure yet.

When I buy those bundles I always set 100% to the developers. Charities ain't getting shit anymore due to their CEO's are taking 1+ million EUR away (as with the charities here) while letting other people work for free for the charities. They can go fuck themselves sideways 24/7.

I don't know how things work in whatever European hellhole you live in, but over here in the free world, organizations that want to file as charitable have to disclose lots of detailed financial information, for professional and public audit, to prevent this kind of corruption. Child's Play has always come up clean, and none of the organizers are becoming millionaires off of it.

Successful, well-off, and influential people creating a charitable organization? You've seriously never heard of such a thing? Because it happens all the time.

Your guilt and whether or not not you can assuage it isn't the point, and none of the charity's concern. You're forgetting about, you know, how they actually use the money for something. If that's your mindset on charity, that it's only there to help you feel better, then keep your fucking money, because you're hopelessly misguided.

Not to be argumentative, because I agree with your post entirely. But

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eton_College#Charitable_status_and_fees

There are places that abuse "charitable status". (And, before people start, I'm fairly certain the things that Eton do for their local community are the same as any normal school would likely do if it were in one of the most affluent parts of the UK, funded by millionaires).

I didn't mean to say it was impossible. It just certainly makes it a bit harder to get away with, when your financials are laid bare. Again, Child's Play specifically comes up clean and fair.

I do lose quite a bit of confidence in charity when organizations such as Red Cross spend money on researching whether gamers are comitting war crimes or not.

Yeah, Child's Play is an awesome charity, not only in what they do, but how they do it and how it was originally set-up.

Then don't give to the Red Cross, if you think that outweighs the good they do, or you don't like the way they spend the money. I'm certainly not saying that everyone should give to anything and everything calling itself a "charity." Certainly, check an organization out before you give. I always do.

Lose faith in a particular charity organization, fine. But to lose faith in "charity" in general? A word defined as "benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity" and "generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering"? For fuck's sake.
