Damn, the last weeks i have had on and off what i think is anxiety when i try to sleep. My mind is racing to say the least and suddenly i make an weird error in breathing and i feel a shot in my stomach. This shot in the stomach feeling keeps coming for perhaps half an hour or more until i fall asleep or it might just stop, and i can almost feel myself zone out of my body in an inexplainable way and i have to move my body abit in order to feel normal again . Guess i irrationally worry that the breathing mistake will happen more times when trying to sleep. Damn thoughts are so damn weird in what i assume is between sleep and awake state.
I bet like always that this is some screwed up weird thing that is completely unheard of
i can almost feel myself zone out of my body in an unexplainable way
It's called 'depersonalization' and it's a part of an anxiety disorder. If that starts to bother you for some time, I would suggest you to talk with your shrink and there are good medications for that and racing mind like Xanax. But Xanax can be a devil if you take it too long, especially higher doses and can cause tolerance and dependency. Anyways, anxiety can be a living hell and hard to fight against it. I've been there.

from reading up on the wikipedia it sounds nothing like what i experience. I feel myself inside the body, just a bit out of sync in a way and moving a bit makes it go away.
I once went to the Emergency room because i had a panic attack. In the night my breathing was heavy, my stomach was all weird and i couldn't sleep. I kept tossing and turning and then i got up and i felt out of breath. Heart pounding like crazy. Then when i though "shit, something is seriously wrong with me" i really went into panic mode. I called a friend who is a doctor (this was all around 3 a.m.) and he said if it's really that bad to call an ambulance, which i didn't want to do. I went back to bed and counted my breaths (4 seconds inhale 4 second exhale), i feel asleep around 5.
In the morning i was ok, until i started freaking out again around noon. Irregular breath and a weird feeling of detachment (i kept pinching my arm). So my cousin came round and took me to the hospital. I was there for 8 hours, they did EKG, an X-ray of my lungs, blood tests the lot. End result? I was probably the healthiest person there. The doctor was then convincing me that everything might have been psychological which of course i didn't believe. Then for 3 months i had trouble with my breath... I was conscious of it which is a really weird feeling. I was constantly thinking "is my breathing ok?" "my breath is weird" etc.
Funny stuff looking at it now (this was about 3-4 years ago). Anyway a lot of people have this (but they usually don't admit it). And yes its caused by Anxiety. But go to the doctor just to be sure anyway, you never know.

Well, like I said, if that bothers you talk to your doctor. Maybe it's just nothing. Everybody have sometimes a racing mind. Some daily problems, stress etc.

Im thinking im gonna give it a few more days, then call the doctor if it persists. I thought about doing it today, but it's kind of silly to do it when it had just occured for one day. Last time it happened is months ago.

Eh, if it's periodical then i'm 90% sure its psychological. Think about going to a shrink.

I occasionally have something similar to this. I feel weird and everything I am lying on feels like it's a hard surface, when I move I feel normal again.
I have also suffered from panic attacks in the past. It took me many years to finally realise and train myself into thinking that a panic attack is nothing to worry about and I should just ignore it. I now have palpitations sometimes, which would have been the start of a panic attack, but I ignore them and they only last for a matter of seconds.

I have them for the past 6 years. Actually the right term is 'extrasystoles' or benign premature heart beats. Sometimes they really bother me, sometimes they don't but I have learned to live with them. They often start when I'm lying in bed on my left side. Unfortunately there is no cure since they are caused by anxiety.

isn't there any non addictive non damaging long term medications for anxiety?

SSRIs but they can have bad side effects when weaning off them.

Yeah, SSRI (Paxil) saved my life. The problem is that it hits you with the side effects for the first 2-3 weeks like nausea, sweating, insomnia, tremor etc. which can be mild, severe or no side effects at all. They usually all go away sooner or later. Well, if you suffer from anxiety you have three choices...
1. Get rid of anxiety by learning tricks how to ignore the symptoms. This can be really hard to achieve.
2. Treat anxiety with medications and psychotherapy. Sometimes takes a whole month or more to take a full effect.
3. Leave anxiety untreated and this is.... believe me.... a living nightmare, hell or whatever.
Most important thing I've learned is..... don't Google your symptoms! More you read about symptoms more you get dragged into a vicious circle and thus making your condition worse. But this doesn't mean you have anxiety also and maybe it's just nothing.

tetra hydra cannabinol
But I don't know if it would have worked, it might have... or made it much worse. Panic attacks FTL...
btw iv got periods of strangeness while trying to sleep myself. Iv got sleep apnea so that causes lots of strange sleeping habits. Like snoring just before I get into deep sleep making my heart race and make me panic like a mofo (me scaring myself, lol!). Sometimes this happens over and over... just before I transfer into a proper sleeping state
Not had that for a year or so tho Now I just keep waking up in the middle of the night... with 50% chance of falling asleep again.

Something like that here too. But no snoring, just some weirdness when breathing usualy on rare occasions. I do however snore 1 really loud snore before i fall asleep and make me light right up if i'm in straight up sitting position. Like when i'm on a buss or in a car.
After readin in this thread and from information here and there, it really does seem as if anxiety most certainly is NOT rare and can be described as a pretty common problem. I might be wrong though, just a feeling.

That's because people usually don't talk about it. Like they are a bit ashamed, especially since it's a psychological problem, so i dunno, they think people might think they are crazy or something. Psychological problems are still a bit taboo as a subject for most people.
I had loads of people who i knew tell me they had these types of problems from time to time, but only after i told them what happened to me.
they think people might think they are crazy or something.
That's actually a common part of anxiety. Fear of getting crazy or fear you might do something crazy or have a panic attack in public. This sometimes leads to agoraphobia, scared to go outside, leave the house etc.

I have suffered from night panic/anxienty attacks for several years. I now now they are caused by myself stressing and worrying too much.
When they first started they scared the living crap out of me, i'd go to bed feeling fine relaxed ect.. then fall asleep and bang 1 - 2 hours later wake. The feelings i get where awful, unexplainable detatchment from reality, numb and tingling arms, rapid heart rate, cold sweating, severe nauseous feeling, no control over walking (jelly legs) and an intense feeling of doom like a stroke/heart attack.
Fucking awful i tell you, i have no idea whats going on when i wake like that and it can hit at random. Thankfully i know what it is now and i'm not about to die!
Stress is not to be underestimated. i have been getting better at dealing with it.. I just don't give a fuck now
How long did that last for you? when you wake up until it subsides?
I count myself lucky that these are not among my problems. I DID wake up with numb fingers and such, but that was ulnar entrapment, been much better these last months though. I almost don't get it anymore, and if for some reason i do, i just stretch out my arm and it's back in business within a few seconds. Before it took half an hour atleast.
Start meditation. Some very good meditation courses/exercises for anxiety.
or there is a Linden method. Good to start with. I have his book with videos and audio instructions, very useful. I would upload it somewhere but it's 96mb compressed. I think there is also a torrent on PB.

It's still going on now, probaly on and off for 3 years. Thankfully only a handfull of times a year. It varies on the severity of the panic attack, but usually after 5 - 10 minutes i come back around and start to calm down. then i am usually awake for an hour or two feeling rough, or if i'm lucky go straight back to sleep.
Sometimes though it can carry on to the next day and i feel like shit all day, wasted and exhausted.
Meditation is good, i have started up training at the gym again which helps greatly to releave tension and stress.
might want to try weed, but as stated it can cause the symptoms to get worse if you are the type who gets jumpy or paranoid when you smoke it. it also makes a difference what kind you smoke. some strains are better for physical pain, some for mental pains (depression, anxiety, mood/emotion disorders etc). if you try it, go for a sativa dominant strain (like haze) and take it easy at first (unless you are already a smoker and know what you are dealing with).
another thing to consider, and i realize this is going to sound like a dumb hippie or new age asshole, but there is a balance between body/mind/soul that people neglect. usually in this age we live in, its body people neglect. if you think you get enough exercise then try to learn something new (in a similar situation as you, i taught myself java, 3d graphics, adobe creative suite etc in the last few years to keep my mind busy), or as suggested above, meditate and see if that helps. i imagine yoga or taichi would be great to get some exercise for your body mind and soul all at once. in my experience, making an effort to do something in one or more of those three areas helped more than anything else.
I tried the ganja, worked for me too, but, my better half back got completely paranoid when smoking weed, he'd be screaming he's falling off the couch, his brain was floating around inside his head and was going to fall out..
Whilst I'm all nicely chilled and relaxed and munching on cheetoz.. Needless to say, gave up on weed..
And yes, don't google about your conditions.. It can really freak you out..
