So the tutorial left out some stuff I kinda need help with.
First and foremost, I haven't figured out how to bring up the save/quit menu. It's always escape but it doesn't work. None of the F buttons work.
I'm on I think mission 3 or 4 where you're looking for some station in an asteroid field. You find it and a bunch of weapon platforms start popping up, missles hitting me. How do I manually steer my ship? I mean I want to move AWAY from the platforms but there's nothing to use as a guide point. I could set it to "avoid" a target but that means I might fly into the range of another weapons platform.
At one point in the beginning of the mission it tells me to navigate around some asteroid? What asteroid and how the hell do I do that lol.
So far this game is fantastic, it's like EVE Online...only offline
Also, does the MP portion of it not work anymore? It just sits there and says "connecting"

Escape certainly works here, though it has a slight delay. Have you patched it? Don't think there's any other way to reach the menu.
To move freely, hold Shift. Can't remember the asteroid, but a good way to deal with the weapons platforms is to use one or two of those missiles/torpedoes.

hold shift+left click+ up/down the mouse in any direction you want the ship to go.
that mission it's a little tricky: check for a ship wreck, it will get you easier to break the perimeter; also try to snipe the missile platforms with fighters/bombers while trying to avoid the other platforms phalanx fire over them.

Got it on steam so ya it's patched up. It worked at the beginning but as soon as I get into the mission it doesn't work.
[edit] I can't even snipe. My missles won't activate and if I get in shooting range to the platforms I start getting bombarded with missiles.

Aight there is literally nothing I can do to win this mission. Missiles keep hitting me and my ECM or whatever misses the missile half the time so I blow up with 3 hits of missiles. I have to get close or I can't fire, if I get too close I get abolished.
Is there something the retarded tutorial left out?

Hmm, maybe you can try cracked executables for the esc problem? Not sure how it'll work with steam though.
Maybe you used all your missiles in another mission. If so, then sending fighters and bombers( assuming you have any) might be your only option. Possibly restarting from a point where you had missiles and then *not* spending them all.

I don't remember the specifics of the game anymore, but one thing is for sure - it was one FUCKING GREAT game.

Yes, but you have to use points to 'buy' them I think. Can't remember if that's possible at that early stage of the game though.

seems you have a really nice bug . if you can't make the steam version work, then try using a cracked version. i've played the game many times over the years and never had such a problem as the one you describe (or at least i don't remember)

how would the cracked version help? I'm using it through steam and it's fully patched? I dont' think it's so much a bug as it is me just sucking at this game haha. I can't imagine they'd make the game where you HAVE to use missiles on that mission knowing full well you'd use them on another.

From what I saw on the forum, there are some people complaining that the widescreen hack sometimes prohibits the ESC menu from appearing. I hope that's not the case.. but it does seem that way :\ I grabbed it on Steam last night so I'll check it out later myself =)
