I'll create a proper thread and template when more concrete info is released, but...!! For a Freelancer/DSO-esque space title, this is something I would recommend to EVERYBODY as soon as it's released; Galaxy on Fire 2!! It's originally an IOS (iPod through to Pad2) and Android space opera title, much the same as Freelancer, one I've sunk a scary amount of time into both on my Pod and now the HD remake/redesign on my iPad. I've been fervently hoping for a Windows release since FishLabs put out the OSX version last November.... and now it's coming! Very Happy

FullHD Announce Trailer:
Gameplay trailer:

This really is a scary good Freelancer clone and I'm really hyped now that it is coming to PC as well.

Yeah, I was talking to my missus this morning about how much I envy Mac owners getting their version of the game when I would love a full desktop one myself ... only to see that it was actually announced a couple months back and it's currently in beta. I have the first two on my Pod, GoF2 HD on my Pad2 and also the Valkyrie addons for GoF2 on my Pod, still waiting for Valkyrie to come for GoF2 HD. Heh, I'm a bit of a GoF junkie grinhurt

Wow so far so good. Other than the asshat decision to not include widescreen resolutions and the pain in the ass that is to change.

So far it's pretty damn....in depth. Sort of feels a bit like Eve Online only in single player.

How is the MP and what's it about?

AND HOW THE FUCK DID THIS COME OUT SO LONG AGO WITHOUT ME KNOWING?

Check out this thread, there are some instructions for widescreen mode.

Ya I'm playing in widescreen but the cutscenes and so forth are all still playing where half of it is off screen.

[edit] How the bloody hell do you exit the game? Escape doesn't bring up the menu, all the F buttons are already assigned Neutral

[edit] [edit] Multiplayer won't even connect to a master server. The MP dead?

morboz..

Everyone can throw the "heavy hitters" out at you like Freelancer, Freespace and Independence War; and by all means based on the fact that they're the cream of the crop.. I'm certain you'll enjoy them.

But..

If YOU enjoyed Darkstar One and you want some suggestions of games "like" it from that same era.. I would suggest Spaceforce: Rogue Universe (I actually thoroughly enjoyed it) and The Tarr Chronicles.

Earlier games that are like it (and run on older systems) are Tachyon (with Bruce Campbell's voice acting) and Terminus (many disliked it.).

Even earlier still would be Xenocracy and Phoenix (these will be very difficult to find).

Space sims are the only genre next to Mech sims that I actually buy retail and I own about 95% of them. I rarely finish them.. but I have played all of them.

I'd recommend I-War 2 over I-War as I found the learning curve in the first game to almost kill the enjoyment. I-War 2 had an awesomw story though, great graphics and was a LOT easier to fly.

The Freespace 2 Source Code Project has literally taken that old excellent game and breathed new life into it as their are literally dozens of total conversions and alternate story mods.. complete with their own graphics, music and storylines.

All of these games can be enjoyed with a joystick.

BTW.. SpykeZ.. you probably know you can change Nexus to widescreen (details at the Widescreen Gaming Forum) and space will look fine but it totally borks up the in-game menus and message screen, and there's no way to fix that.

Ooooh, I thought I was the only one who enjoyed Tarr Chronicles and Spaceforce! Good call, emdeec Both games are a little rough around the edges, but yeah; definitely recommended for DSO-alike titles, though those with little patience be warned --- Spaceforce is a cheap bastard and can end up with a lot of frustrating battles due to the shitty energy regen on your weapons.

I'll just add another oldie-but-goodie, though it's not REALLY a space sim; Hardwar.

I LOVE Hardwar! Still drag it out and play it now and then. I think I've even ran it on XP (with some tweaks). Zedo's site is still around.

I actually have an old dual-boot W95C and 98SE hardware-based box to play my old 9X era games on (LOL.. got two Voodoo 2's in SLI in it). Only way to go.

Have a REAL DOS box too.

It's even playable on Vista/7 too and the modding community is absolutely massive, with some of the mods and tweaks being downright essential so as to fix the broken economy in the game. Hardwar is brilliant and EXACTLY the sort of the game that deserves a remake/update. There are plenty of space pirate/merchant/etc titles, but next to no world/ground based ones, like Hardwar.

Nice on your W98 Voodoo box! I'm envious ^_^

I got nothing against the first I-War really. It's just that the first 3 times I'd played it I got overwhelmed by all the various ship systems you had to run literally on your own.

That.. and I found the "big'' ships to be cumbersome.. so I moved on to I-War 2 a couple years later and thought it was much better. Even Particle Systems knew what was wrong with the first game and fixed all of it in 2.

Having said that.. I did re-install I-War a couple years ago again and vowed to learn how to fly the friggin' ship. Once I actually started aceing the obstacle course i actually started playing but at that point I'd lost heart and interest in the game and gave up again quickly.

I wish I'd actually put the effort into it way back when it was released. Things would have been better. I own the deluxe edition with the add-on.

I hear GOG offers #2 now (I even snatched it somewhere) but frankly.. I-War 2 has always ran and looked gorgeous for me in XP.. to this day.

@sabin..

I hadn't been to Zedo's in ages and somewhere someone mentioned him and Hardwar the other day and I found his page again and was amazed at the fact that people are still crankin' out stuff for that game!

I don't see the point in the new patch that makes light wells obsolete though.. that just plain takes the fun out of the game.. IMHO.

@emdeec

hey there
well, since opening this thread, i was blown with some half a dozen games on my 'to-play list'
i always enjoyed this genre, but somehow missed most of those games Sad
so now im in the process of catching up to ten years or so of missed gems
currently playing Freelancer, then i just wanted to have a look at I-War 2, played just a bit, and now im constantly fighting the urge to play it instead of Freelancer Crying or Very sad
their just THAT good, and now after having a look at Spaceforce and The Tarr Chronicles, following your advice, i feel compelled to get my hands on those as well.
i simply must stop checking this thread for a while Very Happy
curse my "abundance of un-played excellent games pile" waiting to be played, in this era of scarcity of quality games.
well, back to Freelacer... maybe I-War... Damn

No Starlancer? Personally, it was one of the more enjoying space-sims since X-Wing, Tie Fighter and WC:Privateer. Too bad Freelancer ended up completely different and disappointing.

There's also a really big community modding Freelancer as well..

Discovery Freelancer:
http://discoveryfl.com/

Lancers Reactor:
http://www.lancersreactor.org

The Starport:
http://the-starport.net/

The only thing I disliked about FL is it didn't last long enough. If I can say I finished it.. then trust me.. it HAS to be short.

Most of the mods (be sure and get the Freelancer Mod Manager (AKA FLMM) and it will make installing and running them real easy.

Most of the mods are alternate universes running on private servers with multi-player.. but a few are actually whole new SP experiences. The king of Freelancer mods is Crossfire. It's even bigger a download than the base game and will only run in FLMM (as will most mods).

The cool thing about FLMM is that you can load and play any mods or combo thereof (some don't mix.. but FLMM will even inform you of that) and when you're finished it will unload them and revert your Freelancer install back to "vanilla".. way cool.

Starlancer was okay.. but honestly.. for some reason I've never quite figured out.. I dislike Wing Commander.. so..

It took me years to even cozy up to Freespace.. just strange.

emdeec, when I first read your post about FS2 project I read it incorrectly "The Freespace 2 Source Code Project has literally taken that old excellent game and breathed new life into it"
I took the THAT as being I-War2 and got excited, as if there was a total conversion of I-War or IW2. Drat, that would have rocked!
