Which of those changes "derpifies" the game exactly? I don't get it. It's Blizzard, this is probably the 13452nd time they changed the internal systems. The only thing that I think is strange is changing the identifying system (why include it if it's only going to be a click of a button anyway?).

There's a timer to the identifying process, I assume this leaves your character vulnerable and I guess the timer might vary depending on item rarity.
(Still with that recall stone it seems fairly simple just to activate that - probably also takes some time - and then go back to the town hub and do all item management there.)

Personally I like the changes. They have nothing to do with derping down D3, read them again people and pull your heads out of your asses.
What worries me is that we can infer that skill and rune system is basically back at the drawing board which is astounding. We are talking here about two MAJOR game system that basically define the whole game and they STILL don't know how they want them to look? Project leader is doing shitty jon if you ask me. Let's wait and see what they come up with in the end.
As for the release date - shit, I don't give a fuck if they release it march, june or september. We've been waiting so many years for it, I can wait couple more months. Q1 is out of the question imho, but May/June is stiall viable release windows.

identifying an item is part of the fun. Especially now with unqiues having random stats added aswell.
having to buy and use scrolls was always more of a chore than anything.

I always was one for making identify a skill only, so no identifying merchants or scrolls. That might be too harsh though. If they really have to remove scrolls and such, I'd rather have they completely remove the identifying process. By making it a click of a button, no matter if it's timed or not, they make it as useless and tedious as repairing shit in RPGs.

I dont understand the decision of the identify change either. Pretty silly.
I agree also that it should be a skill that you can upgrade. Higher the skill, less time it takes with different items (based on rarity) taking longer based on skill level. That would make much more sense to me if they want to do away with the scrolls.
I would keep merchant identifying though for people that don't want to invest in that skill. I would just make it cost them.
If they are just going to go with a button click. . . i see no use in it at all either really.

Was there item repairing in Diablo 2? I don't quite remember but I think it was a town service type of task, I think I remember it clearly being in Diablo 1 though.
(Unsure if it broke beyond repair or if you could still fix it though, artifacts weren't all that frequent but neither were they mostly all that powerful in Diablo 1 but in Diablo 2 what with set items added to the mix along with rarer item types it likely must have infuriated some people. - not as bad as dying at level 98 with a hardcore character though ha ha, not that I would ever have managed to get that far myself but I think I've read about such things.)
EDIT: Yeah Diablo 2 had item durability.

I just don't get why they didn't get rid of identifying entirely then.

Because the moment between an item dropping and the item being identified exists - and that moment is exciting.
Personally, I think the moment should be preserved - but the particulars are debatable.
I would probably do the following:
Let minor magical items be identifiable through a minimal effort - and let the player do it at will.
Let major magical items be identifiable only through NPCs (or whatever mechanism) only accessible in the hub.

Identify system has to do with the fact how the game calculates the drops. If everything was already identified, the game would be able to tell epic drops from non-epic, magical from white, etc. Thus it would use a formula as to how many items like that should drop, thus taking away from what's possible to drop, because if you already got a super mega item, it might drop a bunch of crap for everything else, since it knows it dropped that epic already. With an item being unidentified, the game bypasses those checks and so you have a chance to get a crappy item once you ID it, or a great item, but without the game nerfing the potential of drops.
As for the delay and lack of vision on Jay Wilson's part, all I can say is that YOU CAN'T replace talent that was Bill Roper! Period. End of story.
All these delays and reworkings of CORE systems at the very end of the production cycle (after Blizz announced they'd release the game Q1 2012, nobody was pulling their tongues to say that) simply shows that Jay has NO VISION of what D3 should be. He's just tasked to make a ton of money and how to do it so they can utilize b.net's auction house to the max profit of Activision-Blizzard. It stinks of the whole new virtual market scheme.
The whole thing about reiterations making a great game is nonsense. That only works if you created a masterpiece (D1&D2) and you're reworking certain mistakes you've made. Like Bill Roper did going from D1 to D2.
Wilson has no vision and is constantly redoing systems because his ideas are failing when they get tested.
Whatever though, GW2 is coming soon and it'll pwn D3, that's for sure. Even though I own every Blizzard game there is, Activision-Blizzard is NOT Blizzard North, and these "reworkings" during the "polishing stage" are proof of a cloudy future.
Duke Nukem Forever anyone??

its ridicoulous that they would make all white items pointless... at least in d2 we had the socketed runeword items that we had to be superlucky to get that 4 socket etherial bardiche

all d3 core gameplay mechanics seem to be in a complete mess, and they are even working on changes to the skill/rune system which they havent announce yet.

cant be more of a mess than what some people here guess and assume and theorize lol.
like pickupartist, who's last reply makes like no sense whatsoever.
In d2, yes, 1 white out of a million dropped was useful.
does that make white useful ? no, it doesnt.
Whites never been useful and never will be. with the EXCEPTION of that 1 freak accident of a runeword ...
its possible we wil have something like that in d3 again, maybe not. But bitching about how "all white items are pointless" is just dumb lol.
think about it, really think lol.

Seriously, in D2, you got to the point where you didn't even pick them up anymore pretty fast.

if they want to give them a stupid meaning, they could let them be unidentified whites, with a small chance to become uncommon or whatever.
but is kinda stupid.

I don't like what blizzard has become. They seem to be unable to make a game which is not targeting every customer in the planet. Also I started to notice that every their game looks cartoony in style as wow. Even Diablo3 doesn't look as "serious and dark" as I would like.
