As far as I've worked out, it's just in-house developed titles that EA can exercise control over with regards to no-Steam. One of the guys behind Amalur apparently said he wanted it on Steam, and EA had no choice but to say okay (from what I've read on Gaf).
Edit: Or EA aren't involved with it at all...
"EA isn't even publishing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on Steam. 38 Studios is, so I"m guessing they have the same sort of agreement with EA as Valve does."
And he's right. From the Steam Store page
"Title: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning™
Genre: Action, RPG
Developer: Big Huge Games , 38 Studios
Publisher: 38 Studios"

As I expected, that "groundbreaking" combat system is absolutely idiotic. The game has a certain appeal but it's way too consolish, derpy or however you may want to call it. The post-processing effects are so damn retarded... what's with all that vaseline?! What's their point?! While I understand the fact that they wanted this kind of art style, I can't understand the overall poor and muddy graphics.

This game is a bit of a turkey. Clunky console port with little appeal.
Look at it next to Skyrim and laugh.

I'm going to play the demo to the end to give it a fair shot - but so far, the combat is the only thing, that might be better than Skyrim. Of course, Skyrim combat was boring repetitive shit, so yeah ...

I thought it was alright, but for a company that said "we're going to try shipping with zero bugs" there sure are a few noticeable ones.
Performance is great and load times are fast, but the graphics suck. Post processing creates way too much bloom, but turning it off makes the game too dark. I also hate how you can only jump down from ledges at specific points. Combat is fun at least.

The demo was ready a few weeks ago...and put a side...they are working hard on bug fixes...we all know it is impossible in an open world not to have bugs...the game is out Feb 7..lots to do until then...I like the game...graphics are nice...reminds me of torchlight style...it is no Skyrim...but what could possibly beat the "RIM"...another "RIM" LOL!

Finished the demo, timed out before I could finish two quests otherwise I explored nearly everything but I probably missed a dungeon and there were some locked areas I did not get access to, I liked it though as mentioned there's a few glitches.
(Tons of items though and the game is fairly open ended, nice combat and interesting variety in NPC and monsters plus quite a few quests - or so it appears - and overall it's a interesting game world, numerous skills and very open class progression also, still these ~1 hour 30 minute / 45 minute timed after completing the intro / isn't all much to judge the game by but I liked the initial impressions it gave.)

Like I said in my initial response - it's a mixed bag for me.
Graphics are not my style, but it's workable. Reminds me of Fable a bit, don't know why. I absolutely loathe the consoleish controls, having my character smack dab in the middle of my screen is irritating to no end. The story sounds interesting, but the execution of the story seems very simplistic and childish. Combat so far is a button-masher, no interesting combos/cross-play between skills. Yeah, it doesn't have set classes, but combat seems like a poor man's gothic/risen. Also, too easy. This of course might get more complex at later levels, however it's very forgiving and spamming is a very valid tactic - I bet that's how 99.9% of console gamers intend to "win".
We'll see ...

Yeah I didn't mention it much but the camera caused some issues here too and it's pretty closely zoomed in, art style is understandable in that it allows some nice detail while keeping things relatively simple but it's a bit basic and the cartoon like visuals or perhaps it's better to say that they're more colorful and imaginative anyway it does look like MMO titles from a few years back and it will definitively not work for everybody.
Not that many issues with the controls but I relied on the default control set and didn't need to do much, dodging and slashing / hacking worked through most of it with a bit of magic and side weapons (daggers in my case.) now and again, overall the game demo was very easy once you got to the third level or so and could customize your class more in depth.
(AI is a bit simple too, stealing items isn't all too difficult and the minigames for unlocking stuff and dispelling wards are pretty easy too.)
Combat does allow for some more interesting techniques but seeing how it was already rather easy (Locked to the normal difficulty level however.) using the fate style would just pulverize anything (I had to use it on a named troll boss though.) and special attack abilities also tend to just decimate whatever you are fighting even for "champion" type mobs.
(Only that orange named troll proved any tougher challenge other than the introduction, even groups of sprites weren't all too tough.)
So yeah it's a bit console oriented or well simplified in some ways, maybe that's better to use to describe it.
(Animations are pretty good too but with obvious pauses and openings during combat, it's very easy to learn different enemy behaviours and what works best against them.)
Thant and some generic visual glitches and bugs such as remaining loot bags and having to click the various character menus in a certain way (Somewhat below the middle.) to open that menu.
EDIT: Oh right the story in terms of RPG set ups is a bit basic, some names are also a bit strange such as that Zelda girl.
(Various other stereotypes here as well but fantasy sort-of is like that, with some differences such as that in Witcher as a example.)
(I'm not good at all with explaining so I try to avoid full reviews but I also try to give some opinions about the game though I am pretty forgiving and casual, can play most anything but it takes a bit for a game to really draw me in.)

I think on the hardest level it could be challenging. You see, the AI is actually smart. I ran into a wolfpack and they did not attacked me mindlessly. They regrouped, and smashed their hits one after another. Things like this, on the hardest level and maybe at the later levels could be challenging.
That being said, I kinda liked the combat and the combat camera. I will try the full game.
Great artistic style btw, imagine how this game would look with CDP's Red Engine.

I actually think a really "smart" AI would attack at the same time. Also, it's funny, that you can stunlock almost any enemy. They should have learned from PB, as in those games' combat system you have to expect a reaction from the enemy.

how open is the world in the demo? is it like fable (small linked areas that would basically be hallways if it werent for the sky above), or elder scrolls (walk straight across the map without stopping)?

Hmmz.... not trying to troll the game or anything, played thru the demo and while it wasn't really terribly, I can't say anything in the game really jumped out at me. Prob gonna save my money for "The Darkness II".

It's zones connected with pathways, so closer to Fable. You can see what it's like on the map: http://www.ea.com/uk/reckoning/1/world
The demo is mostly those two areas to the west.

Kinda fun, it's like a derpy Skyrim + Fable mix. I never buy games for $60, if a game is this consoley I just don't see how it's justified

More like constant 140+, but that's a given, with the technically simplistic graphics.
