Freelancer is a great Game, but the Space-genre is a little bit dead Sad
If you like Space-Action you can't go wrong with older Games... the graphics are still great, but you need a joystick for the most, to really enjoy them Wink

Space sims have died, theres that X2 game which isnt that good (Horrible combat, incredibly slow and unfulfulling gameplay), the Derek smart games which dont need any introduction, and eve is an online game so its very different.

My recommendation is Independence War 2, its around the time of Freelancer, and really the best your gonna get when it comes to newer space sims. It focuses more on missions then free-form career...unfortunatly there hasnt been an elite/frontier type sim that holds its merit in a long time.

yeah I was gonna suggest I-War 2 as well works great with an MS Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro or another bulky stick - Freespace 2 is great as well, again an older game but worth checking out. Smile

If your really retro and not a graphics junkie then the x-wing series by Lucasarts can be enjoyable as well, X Wing Alliance was the last game they brought out in that series - at the time of them releasing, Voodoo 3000 cards were still around and a P3 550 with 256 megs was considered top end gaming. It hasn't aged well because I tryed to play it the other day but worth looking up anyway.

Novalogic brought out a space game around the same time as the others I had sugggested called Tachyon the Fringe - it got fairly mixed reviews, didn't like it myself even though I bought it but I see Gamespot scored it 7.5 so it can't be all bad.

Graphics arent everything mate. If you really like space simulators then try Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. The former is perhaps my favorite game of all time...

xwing alliance rockss but if you have an FX series nvidia card dont bother because you cant play with a higher res than 640x480 without the ingame text being all garbled up, lucasarts doesnt care to fix it and niether does nvidia, there are user fixes for it but they suck, if you have an ati card however GET THIS GAME.

Alliance is good, but it's not great in my opinion - probably much better on a LAN like the old X-Wing/Tie Fighter game. I prefer Freespace even if it lacks the realism of other games and is more of a straight shooter with fancy graphics and an involving storyline.

I never really played tachyon to be honest, only the demo - it seemed like World War II in space - but I enjoyed what I played. They used actual bullets instead of lasers in that game too. Worth checking I suppose.

Eve Online is the best space game ever. Playing it since beta 3 and am still addicted. Graphics are still top notch.
You can't control your ship with a joystick though.

i do not play MM games at all, i refuse to pay full price for the software, then have to pay monthly just to play it. what could be worse than sinking $600 a year into a video game and when you get where you want to be they pull the plug on it?

i know someone who plays WOW, and EQ before that. they really seems to like it. they say that paying keeps out the riff-raff and improves the online experience. i think thats a load of horseshit, but it works for them. i must admit that Freelancer was supposed to be an MM (and although i love the game i would not have played it had it been an MM), and would be much improved by the online/LAN end of the game being more dynamic, like wars you could side on, bases to own/operate/defend etc etc.

so how much does Eve Online cost? it has one thing going for it that all these other MM games apparently do not: you don't have to pay for the software then turn around and pay monthly. you can download it for free, right?

then we have Star Wars Galaxies, the space add-on looks very cool; sadly i will never play it cause i do not want to encourage developers to keep churning this stuff out. how much is that per month?

XWing vs Tie-fighter: yea looks cool, good luck running it on XP or 2000.

Freespace: i located a copy of this once, but it would only run 640x480, and i think 1024x768 is low res...

Freelancer: i was trying various mods last time i played (last winter, i think), but the only one with any tension (Starfyre Studios) was not being run on servers anymore. only thing not to like about that mod was the star wars ships and how they tampered with the original systems (like the ice and asteroid fields looked like a bunch of floating potatoes). i think they claimed it was an optimization but it looked like a fuck up they never fixed. the other mods can be really cool to downright pointless, but there is nothing to do after you get a big ship in nearly all of them. too bad there was never a way to build a base, or at least buy one. hell, a base ship would have been nice that could hold a fighter and be somewhat remotely controlled.

Xwing Alliance was a great game, although it starts pretty slow and the ending (flying the tunnels in the death star) was not implemented very well.

Hegemonia was pretty good for a space fix, although it is an RTS.

i will second that X2 was horrible. what made it worse was how bad you want it to work after you play it. combat was stench, impossible to hit anything its so poorly implemented. graphics were nothing wonderful, and you have to enter a key just to look at the forums... too bad for those who bought it, goto look at the forums and see tons of performance related complaints. and even worse: no multiplayer at all!!!

The people in this thread have already mentioned most of the notables, including Tachyon: the Fringe, which I thought was much better than Freelancer (a game that I found to be even more disappointing than Master of Orion 3, but still good). Try finding copies of Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga and the X-Wing and TIE Fighter Collector's Editions if you want to play versions of those games that might work on modern PCs without DOSBox or something.

Strangely, nobody has yet mentioned the spiritual predecessor to Freelancer, which is Wing Commander: Privateer. A group of fans recently released an open-source version of that game with the addon for free. The graphics are still dated, but quite a bit better than on the original. There's also Starlancer, which is the direct predecessor to Freelancer and is also pretty good.

I haven't gotten to play X2 yet, but X: Beyond the Frontier was good. It's like Privateer, but has a much more complex economic model where you can buy your own mines and space stations and shit in order to make money. BTW, the only games mentioned that are really similar to Freelancer are Privateer, the X games, and Tachyon. And, of course, the Elite series, if you're willing to go that far back.

I just remembered another couple of games: Starfleet Academy and Klingon Academy. Most people didn't really like them, though. They're gigantic too, because they have live-action FMV; they're both 6 CDs (if you include the addon for Starfleet Academy). Then you've got some of the more-consolified Star Wars sims that haven't been mentioned, like Rogue Squadron.

Most of these games were made before the beginning of the century, as the space sim genre is dying out. There's a lot out there if you're willing to look beyond the dated graphics, though.

There are also a few old ones, like Shuttle and Microsoft Space Simulator.
