Not trying to be a troll here, but am I the only one who thinks that if I were a film, TV, or games maker that I too wouldnt like to see the product that I and many other people spent time making, promoting and putting the product on the shelf, that I would be desperate to stop people pirating it, thus losing me money.

You cant blame these people for trying.

Well like the owner of valve said about piracy, it's the manner in which company's distribute there software is the key in how to deal with piracy.
Not draconian laws like this be discussed by people who cannot even access computers let alone type on a keyboard.

God, this shit is pretty funny. I never liked GoDaddy, but now with SOPA and them supporting it the rest of the world finally sees how shit they are

@ Mantis: look at Louis C.K. - his solution worked. The problem isn't that people don't want to buy stuff, it's because they feel it's too expensive. At least that's the case for me with most games and films (and I in fact buy a LOT still). Compared to 11 years ago I now pay more than twice what I used to pay for what I consider to be much better products in many cases. Every AAA title is now 50 Euros or more, which is 110.19 guilders. For that money I typically get a game that'll last 6-8 hours, has a crap ton of bugs and is dumbed down to the point where a 4 year old can finish it with ease. 11 years ago I paid 45 guilders for that. Games would still try to challenge you, innovate wherever they could. And once done, I could usually either replay it in the case of RPGs, or mod it in every other case (HL, Q3, UT) to get even more hours out of it.

I agree to a cetain extent that games are to expensive its been an issue since I started playing games 27+ years ago, and piracy has also always been in issue, but honestly I think a lot of people would still pirate games if they were the same price as Blue ray films.

I dont think games have become more expensive, not at all, remeber when the Sega master system was released, card games were £15 and Cartridge game were £25, and going back further if I remember correctly Atari game cartridge were mega mone in comparison with people wages.

I think even the games makers have said themselves that they want the price brought down, but its the middle men who make the prices, not them.

I think people dont really understand the amount of work and money that goes into video game production, and that they dont get the same kind of money run movies do, in terms of movies get Cinema>rental>purchase.

I'm not saying that videos games arent expensive, but I do also think that in the same shoes I would want the piracey scene strangled, it has become big in the past 10 years, and piracey has become much easier and more widespread.

Having worked in the music industry and more specifically also digital distribution of it, I can atleast say they arent exactly helping themselves with how stubborn and draconian their outlook of it is.

Well the stuff I wrote above wasn't bullshit. Prices in the UK are far more reasonable than for the rest of us though, so for you it is slightly different. For me though, prices have in fact more than doubled and as a result I don't just think twice before making most purchases, I think 5 times. That's also why I haven't bought (nor pirated for that matter) Skyrim yet for example. I knew up front that it was gonna need balancing and mods to make it worth it for me. If I take Bethesda's (sorry, I've come to despise them for what they did to Fallout and ES Razz) last fuck-up, I'm glad I pirated it rather than buying: Rage. Lacking a demo and being very skeptical about the game I had to find out one way or another whether it was any good. By pirating it I found it that it had potential but wasn't quite worth the 50 EUR (42 quid, for the record).

Some developers do indeed. Those are also the developers who put out quality games most of the time.

Mantis2K9 wrote:

Can you honestly say we still get as many games worth the full price as say, a decade ago? 2011 has been a good year, but even so it is no 1998 in which we got HL, Unreal, SC (and BW), FO2, BG, Commandos, R6, Grim Fandango, SiN, Heretic 2, Thief, Rogue Squadron, Falcon 4 - and that's just the PC titles I can remember. Every single one of these offered more playtime than 95% of all games nowadays, with better narration, technological innovation (HL for its ridiculously scalable engine, Unreal for sheer awesomeness) and challenging gameplay. And each of these was successful even for today's standards. And most of these also had proper demos, with retail versions being very easy to crack.

So no, I don't think it's just piracy. The big software houses have become lazy for the most part. There's very few developers I'm willing to trust based on gameplay videos and screenshots; I can't rely on reviews either, since most "journos" are the same kind of retarded crowd that buys into Derps of War 27 Smile

You can't even trust the oldest and best developers to deliver anymore, just look at id.

Yeah I agree when it comes to prices in other parts of the world then I havent got a great amount of knowledge, I did look at US prices and they did seem a little steep.

But as for the UK pricing I'm gonna stick by my guns past and present.

As for you last point, I think some really good titles get released every year, more than often enough I know which are good and which are not, sometimes I buy them full price and sometimes I buy themwhen they get in the bargin bin.

I often wait for demos, and rarly get caught out.

I Will admit tho I bought Jurrasic park from PSN, I thought it was a resident evil type game, but turned out to be a big waste of money I cant take back.

A lot of shops these day offer you the chance to take back a game ( console ) and get a refund if you dont like it, or atleast most of your money.

One thing I found with people who pirate games is that they often end up with loads of games, and when you say to them, which ones you played, often they have hardly played any of them Laughing its like they are collecting them.

I dont think Developers have really changed over the years TBH some have always churned out the same old crap, especially the ones who get the movie liscences.

I got three games for Christmas, Batman, BF3 and SKyrim as far as im concerned these were worth every penny.
