Used to stick to private trackers, but having to seed everything was a major pain with my slow-ass upload.

Been using Usenet for the past year or two, works great.

There is "cheat" for that: if you use utorrent 1.6 you can delete the tracker url from the torrent after you connected to some seeds. The client doesn't know where to send your download stats and on the tracker page it shows as 0 bytes downloaded. Laughing
Works always for me.

like a former admin for torentz private site, that is the easyest cheat to catch and ban.
modified client ftw. easly detectable if the user is a moron, hard to detect if you cheat on a high traffic torrent with lots of seeders/leechers with an updated real client key.

I'm absolutely positive CDP actually said something along these lines before the release of Witcher 2. I remember an article with CDP about W2, where they were asked about piracy and their response was something along the lines of "we have something in the works to counter piracy" or some such. I can't remember exactly, just that I *know* it was something similar.

I guess this was their surprise.

They pretty much said pre-release they'd hunt down pirates, only in nice wording. This is funny though, since public torrents are usually the domain of "light" pirates.

That is smart, because those usually don't know better. So once they get a letter with in there that they get accused of downloading blablabla, then they are 99.9% sure of it to get payed.
Just for the sole reason that those people are scared to download in the first place and then they do it with these cheap ways.

well, I must say I'm a little dissappointed with this initiative. I thought guys from CDP actually do understand that the best way of fighting pc piracy is by making your product worth spending money for. the retail version of witcher 2, even the standard edition is a thing of beauty and I'm glad I bought it. they admitted drm was a mistake and removed it with a patch. but before the patch, the best way of dealing with issues caused by drm was to download the scene release, even if you already had the original copy.

I would very much like it if they sent me one Very Happy

I downloaded it (not via torrent, but still). But bought it afterwards on Steam Razz I could then prove to them that my evil "downloading" of their game made me buy it in the end...

I hate this corporate thinking of pirated copy == lost sale.
It's horseshit and it's time they realize that.

The best way to deal with DRM was to buy GoG version, or just download an exe file from it, which was widely spread soon after the release.

It's also true they said they're gonna do something along those lines and it really can't be argued that they aren't also fighting piracy with quality, since Witcher 2 editions are both rich and nicely supported.

Still, I'm a bit dissapointed by this move too, so I'm not really gonna defend them. Manouvers such as this leave bad taste no matter how you look at them.

It's a good thing. Get all the derps to pay for their games. Make it hard to pirate. I will always get my stuff through different channels anyway. Torrents has made it too easy and too accessible to pirate software. Hell I'd go as far as saying torrents has made pirating mainstream and that isn't a good thing for PC-gaming as a whole. The platform needs to generate a profit for the developers. Back in the day you had to have some form of connections to get to the goods. Today even granny can be a pirate without any hassle.

Scare the derps into buying the software for all I care. It's for the best of PC-gaming as a whole. It won't affect me much though. I will always find a way although I must admit torrents are hellishly convenient.

This. I am downloading like 100 games per year and planty of movies etc.

Its not like i would buy all of this if there wasnt pirated version avaible.
I would buy like max 5games/year or even less. Becouse thats how many of these houndreds of games yearly deserves to be bough.

I am not going to be fooled like my friend who bough Wither2 and ended with 5fps 800x600 game. Ive downloaded it. Tried out and it runs like shit, So i would have my money thrown into garbage bin.

And what if I download Frigth night or shark3d or whatever. I wouldnt go to the cinema (with these prices) for those movies anyway... And not even thinking about buying them on dvd or bluray with those crazy prices.

Ive tried this route already. I wanted my xbox 360 to be original only, as this is a console and I could be sure that all games works good etc... and what? ive ended up with buying 1-2 new release games and 5 discounted old titles.

just as You said - 5million pirated Call of duty isnt 5mln lost copies in sales. Maybe up to 5 or 10 percent if game is revolutionary Wink

To be honest I find it surprising, considering that GOG stuff gets warez'd on a daily basis, and they don't to anything about it.

Some might, true, but in these parts at least that's quite rare. Plus the retention usually sucks.

I live in the barren wasteland of northwestern MN, so compared to when I lived in the Cities, it is just as good. However near the tail-end of my days there, Comcast limited Usenet to 2 GB per month, so I assume my small ISP will either do the same thing or get rid of it altogether. I get about a year's worth of retention but I always back it up with a premium site.

What the fuck happened with them? Oo

Lawyers happened. I imagine it goes like this:

CDPR: Damn. We sold 1mil+ copies but a gazillion people downloaded our gaem. We're losing money!
Goldstein & partners: Oy vey! But we have a solution for you! We will threaten p2p users with lawsuits and scare them into paying fines. Even if only a fraction of them pay up that's millions of dolari we split 50/50!
CDPR: WHere do we sign?! Very Happy

And the practice is legal, at least in Germany. After all you are breaking copyright law by torrenting stuff. But the law limits the fine and lawyer costs in minor, private cases to 100€. But they often demand 10 times as much, which is what makes it so outrageous.

How do they get personal information from the ISP?
