|
 |
-- Hitman gets dumbed way down
-- STALKER gets canned
-- Metal Gear looks like some manga shit
-- Duke Nukem was a turd
-- RAGE was nothing special
-- Dragon Age 2 - LOL
-- Syndicate turns into yet another FPS POS
-- Rainbow 6 comes back dumber than ever
-- Call of Juarez TEH KARTEL
-- Brink, the all new flappity flappity flop, where is it now?
-- Homefront, the game that looked good for years, COD wanna-fail-be
-- Resident Evil dives further into the generic shooter category
-- Sniper Ghost warrior devs learn nothing from their previous "Sniper" game. I look forward to that being in the bargain bin, again.
-- Red Faction game, after an open world one, turns out to be a linear corridor shooter
-- New Brothers in Arms game, whatz a popular movie + letz mekk a game
-- Operation Floppoint
-- F@3R
-- Death to spies gets Absolution-like xray vision
Probably lots more I missed. Some decent studios shut down too.
There's no denying there were some great games this year as well, but at the start of 2011 all of these games had enough promise to continue being as good as their predecessors (the way Deus Ex 3 had proven to a degree).
Now look at them. More games down the toilet in the ever expanding pool of games to no longer give a shit about. What's even left for tactical shooters now that MGS is tacticool, ARMA + RO2?
What's in store for 2012?

Yeah I agree. They've raped a lot of potentially good games in 2011. You can thank Mr. Xbox and Playstation for that in my opinion. Catering to idiots is how you sell 20 million copies of CoD these days.

I don't understand your point. You list a subjective list with bad games released this year, disregard some of the best games ever made, and call it a bad year. I can make a list of depressingly bad games for every year'.

This 2011 was a surprisingly epic year for gaming, but it also laid the foundations for a potentially terribad 2012 like Interinactive said.
Innovation is a completely unknown concept by now, but we already know it. Companies like EA, Activision, Ubisoft are constantly destroying our beloved franchises and derpin' down everything, but we already know it.
We can only watch this situation impotently, all we can do is cross our fingers and try to "think positive". What the future has in store for us definitely doesn't look good...but at least we have the awesome indie games, which is a start.

Isn't there always wasted potential and aren't IPs always being ruined? I don't exactly understand what's so special about this year and why it deserved a new thread in that regard. I guess it's somethig subjective, so let's agree to disagree.

tbh is really hard to find a thing to innovate from like 5+ years ago.
is not like you can get a new concept like dungeon keeper for every game.

The only games i played this year
- Crysis 2
- Portal 2
- Saint Row 3
- FEAR 3
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (just to see how bad it is, i played 1 level and removed it (just like their other shit games))
All others that got released either sucked or i was not interested in.
I remember playing more games in the past than the last 2-3 years .... gaming industry is going downward anyway. They only care about money instead of story lines etc.

No, but spending time refining your game is innovative already these days. Hell, even QA is innovative for most studios (sup, id/Bethesda?).
And then there are games like DXHR, which got enough of it right to still be a good game to my (and many fellow humpers') standards yet not be a clone of DX. Or BF3, which while it does not do anything particularly innovative gameplay wise, gets a lot of it just right which makes it a better game than its unbalanced predecessors. Or Portal 2, which is everything Portal was and actually really did manage to present some really innovative gameplay. Or the Shift games, which were a surprisingly refreshing take on the genre and quite possibly the best non-sim I've ever played and just one of the best racing games ever (probably the best mix between arcade and sim ever). Or (and I'm sorry for those of you who haven't had a chance to play it) Mortal Kombat, which is just as "simple" of a game as the first one, which is exactly what makes it so fucking good and I still hate them for not bringing it to PC but it was a worthy purchase for me on the PS3.
And that's without even including the tons of smaller titles; last year I spent more money on "indie" than I did on AAA games. Especially these show that you can still be innovative.
