Lol there so much bullshit flying around these days. First of all I saw some numbers a week ago somewhere and it concluded that the profit from making games far outweighed that of making movies. It's also cheaper, on average, to develop a game. Making games is generally a profitable industry. Some goes bankrupt sure but that's capitalism for you. Those who are terrible at running a corporation should go bankrupt in a world with a healthy economy.
Personally I think making a profit by being a games developer is too easy today. Take Funcom as an example. They totally botched the release of two of their largest projects, AoC and AO, and they still manage to turn a profit. Hell they're even making a third as we speak. There's a lot of those examples out there. It's probably because it's still a very young industry and the market isn't fully saturated yet. In any other industry you would go bankrupt if you fucked up your primary moneymaker on releaseday, unless you had enormous financial reserves saved. There's very few game studios going bankrupt. If they do it's usually because of terrible management. Most that disapears does so because they're being bought by EA, Activision or Ubisoft to name a few. Why do these profit maximizing behemoths keep buying independant studios? Beacuse it's fucking good business obviously.
Second; when companies are making good profits on making proper games why the fuck would they stop? It doesn't make sense. "Yeah we're making good profits making AAA games, I know, but everyone is talking about facebook and social gaming these days. Let's do that instead". Yeah like that's gonna happen. Sure they might branch into other areas to increase profits, but they won't stop making proper games as long as people crave it. Capitalist law says if they did someone else would start making AAA games instead, because there's profit in it.
Thirdly; let's assume there's a demand for proper games, and there is and there always will be. Let's also assume making new consoles will be too expensive and Sony and MS stops doing just that. What will happen? What do we have left? Yeah the PC and the Mac. What will happen is that some smart brainiac at Asus, Nvidia, AMD or whatever will make a PC-box. Some cheap ass lightweight-PC that comes in a convenient box and behaves like a console. A box you can easily upgrade with new RAM, CPU, GPU or whatever. It will use some kind of retardedly simple standard to save human idiocy from itself. That is unless Apple or Samsung would dive into the console market because it would be wide open without MS or Sony.
Techology will not peak in processor power and software performance that much in the next 10 years, that people will use their phones or ipads to play games on their tv's instead of a dedicated gaming console/pc. That's my analysis and I've been playing games since the early 80's. If they did then some wiseass would make their era's equivalent of BF3 and it wouldn't work properly on their stone age smartphone. People will always want a better experience. Games are far away from peaking in reality perception. When they do you can stop making new tech as the immersion would be perfect at the stage you're at. We're far away from that moment in time still.
So I don't give a fuck. You can stop making new consoles tomorrow for all I care. It won't happen obviously because why the hell would anyone stop doing something they are turning out huge profits on? Can these retarded analysts please stop analysing already? You are retarded. Social gaming my hairy butt lol...
