First of all... how the hell is there auto-targeting? I use mouselook and, because I'm your average FPS player, it's damn fine by me.
Secondly, you really can't judge missions until you get to the one with the fat guy where you're on a motorcycle and the fat guy is driving and you're supposed to shoot the guys behind you. This mission is better than any other mission from the entire GTA series, I swear. It's just too damn fun.
Finally, I don't think you've enjoyed this game fully until you noticed that, just by standing around, the whole world just keeps going on like you aren't even there. What do I mean by this? Well, for one, I think it's fricken awesome when the police come barreling down a road after someone else, run him to the side, and shoot at him in his car. Suddenly there's a 10 car pileup in the middle of the road and what were you doing? Nothing! That kind of shit is HILARIOUS! Completely emergent gameplay that's unscripted; too awesome.
Oh yeah and the only reason the control scheme is harder in SA is because they added "secondary fire". I'm not kidding, that's like the only extra control added since Vice City PC. Oh yeah, there's gang and lowrider controls too, but you barely ever touch those anyway.

Pros:
1. Graphics engine underwent an overhaul. Stuff looks alot more detailed than previous installments. Anti-aliasing is also supported via ingame menu now, but only up to 3x.
Cons:
1. The control scheme is utterly horrid.
Trying to shoot from a vehicle is not possible, as everytime you move your mouse, it changes your camera angle. No way to disable this via options. Thus, you can't see where the fuck you're turning/going during chases where you need to kill/damage opponents.
2. Dialect.
Two points here: A. It tries TOO hard to be gangster. Every other word is "motherfucka", or "nigga".
B. I feel like I need a dictionary to understand what the hell is being said. I find myself trying to decipher what people are talking about, instead of being able to focus on the mission at hand. Maybe I come from the wrong racial/ethnic background or something? Perhaps they don't want non-gangbangers appreciating the story?
3. Missions.
Pretty unforgiving. Slightest fuckup on your part and you fail. Especially the beggining one where its you on a bike vs. a car full of uzis.
You have to follow your buddy back to an unknown point. The only problem is, if you dont go FASTER than your buddy , the car will crash into you and rape you. So basically you slow down to wait for his fat fuckin ass..meanwhile taking damage, until you know where to go. Restart, go faster, to the point you found out last time, bleh. Its doable...but clearly not player friendly. Whats with this tap the "specified key" to go faster? What is this...a fuckin button mashing contest?
4. Lack of station variety.
Well, you have 9 stations devoted to gangster rap, a dub, some modern ass one (still gangsterish), a country station, a talk station, and a custom
No way to toggle it so that every time you enter a car, one station is automatically turned on. Keeping have to fip through shit.
5. Gimmicky Gameplay Bullshit
Didn't get too far, but I did experience the eating/working out section. Pure button mashing bullshit/shallow choice. Enough said.
Bottom line: It beats GTA: VC in regards to graphical appeal, size, and scope. However, it fails HORRIBLY in regards to control scheme, camera control, and storyline appealingness (pure opinion there, however). Maybe it gets better down the line, but I just couldn't enjoy this/wade through all the bullshit to get there.
My two cents. No doubt alot of you guys will like it, nothing wrong with that. But they didn't remedy any of the problems of the previous one gameplay wise, simply added to it. Undeserving of the high ratings its gettting everywhere. |

I think the graphics are really nice considering the size of the area. I have all the settings at their highest and it looks great - especially when it starts raining or there is lightning.
If you tweak the controls they are fine too. That stupid inverted vertical axis made the mouse useless. The only thing I'm confused about is the targeting. I can only seem to get the manual aim and not the lock on thing.

ksponge: Poor audio card support. I know this as a fact because my good computer doesn't have audio problems but my friend's crappy one does.
As for the "is there a way to keep the radio station the same" question... nice job looking into audio options.
For the record, I bought the game, so I have the manual (which is fecking awesome) which makes me a tad more knowledgable about game options and such.
Go into "audio" and select "auto-tune". This makes it so that every car you go into will have whatever station you last set the channel to. There, happy? Now you don't have to deal with the TWO (yes, I actually checked) rap stations. The rest are alternative, rock, rasta, chat, and country (probably missing one). There's some really good stuff in there that takes you back to '92 (if you're even old enough to remember it, jeez you kids these days...).
Oh and while we're at it, "EQ" is a toggle that makes it so the music sounds different with each car. Adds to the realism of the game. Thus a crappy car will make the music sound crappy. A jeep might have huge bass compared to other cars. But if you just set EQ to off then the music is at max quality in all cars.
Oh, and YOUR WELCOME.

well i agree with immunity...fuck the 'professional' *ahem*paid advertising*ahem* reviewers, this game aint worth 50 bucks. and no bad console port deserves a 9.0. after all the sound glitches and ctds im seriously wishing i could take it back. i just think of all the other game devs who worked 2x as hard as r* and got 10x less money to show for it. well hopefully modders will make something from this one...once its patched and playable.

near the start of the game you go see an old guy who gives u a gun and you also get some training. During training it says something about locking on and switching targets with the scroll button. has anyone got this to work? am i the only one that cant lock on to targets or switch targets? wtf?
even in the control options it has setting for target change.

Someone had posted way way back in the discussion that if you do not have T&L lighting options available with your video card then you can not play this game. The gforce 440MX series did not have this option if I remember correctly. Hope that helps you out.

I've got a framerate problem.
Here are my specs :
P4 2.66 ghz
Radeon 9600 128mb
1gb ram memory
By default, the video settings were set to "high" with 800*600 32bits resolution. In this configuration I only get 20-23 fps.
Then I changed it to 1024*768 32bits and it's hardly enjoyable, i get 10-12 fps.
I wondered, although my graphic card isn't a good one, if this low framerate could be caused by my monitor which is a cheap flat one ?
I heard that flat monitors are not that good for gaming.
Thx for your help
 |
It's not your damn monitor, how could it be? Think for a few seconds huh? You play other games fine i assume, you watch movies, but you think your monitor decides to lower its own maximum refresh frequency just to piss you off?
(yeah im so damn not-nice, i know im sick of idiots and their questions)
Try lowering your view distance, try messing with the options, not just preset "High" stuff. Its the small settings that count.

Read a few reviews and came across answers to my aim lock questions...
Gamespot.com
Quote: | Either method works, though we had several cases where the game would simply stop responding to any mouse input until we alt-tabbed out of the game, moved the mouse, and then jumped back in. This isn't exactly the sort of thing you want to have happen in the middle of a shoot-out. Mouse control also removes the lock-on aspect of the targeting, giving you easy access to manual targeting. The refined control the mouse gives you seems like an unfair advantage at times, because it's very easy to rack up one-shot kills by aiming for the head. If you have a smooth mouse hand, even the roughest firefights are really basic...provided the mouse doesn't die on you.
|
So i plugged in my dual analog and the auto aim works fine for gamepads only. the mouse aim is far better in my opinion anyway. quicker kills.

yeah you're right but I just doubted it because I noticed that other games also played less "fluently" (at least it looked like) than they did with my other monitor (a CRT one which I usually use but I lent it to a friend).
I'll try to poke about in the settings.
Thx for ur answer

Hey, i remember the controls in the previous GTA games being better, especially with the cars
i need enable 'mouse steering' so that my mouse won't move around the camera
however, when i do this and let the camera turn itself when i turn the car, it's WAY too slow.. like i'll have turned and the camera will SLOWLY turn and i wont be able to see what the shit is in front of me until it takes its time to finish turning..
also, i've noticed, especially with the bicycle, it'll sometimes seem to 'lock' the steering in one direction until i turn it the other way.. it wasnt like this in the other GTAs... its either a glitch or it was done to try to make it seem more realistic, but it seems kinda random.. anyone know what the deal is with that?
oh one last thing, does anyone know how to assign different axes on my joypad to different things without having to use the logitech drivers? it seems the game was designed to be played with a pad, i wouldnt mind trying to play it like that at least to see

I merely stated my honest opinion of the game. Don't have to agree with me.
As for the "professional" reviewers you refer to, tis somewhat a naive statement. Even a lobotomized monkey would realize that money changes hands in the advertising/game reviewing industry, and that alot of times undeserved praise is given. Exlusive demos, exclusive first looks etc. etc. Tis all about the money.
Now back to the topic at hand.
Anyone beat the mission where you have to chase the 3/4 mexicans ontop of a train car? My...."homie" can't seem to shoot for shit, even at less than a foot away, and the the train escapes before all of them have been capped?
Tried taking the high road as he suggested, but he still can't shoot em for shit.
What am I missing?
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

After playing boiling point, GTA SA seems dated. The gfx are really boring and. The gameplay however is awesome, feels so damn real.
Anyway, anyone know how to increase the no of characters and vehicles on the screen at any given time? i can't stand the clipping!!!!!!!!!111
