Not realy. HOMM is a turn based strategy, this is more of a realtime city builder (like caesar) coupled with a logistics game (like transport tycoon)
Basically you build up your city on one island, untill your citizens demend some other goods. Then you go the a nearby island with the appropriate resources, set up a production chain there and get ships, to regularly transport those goods to your main island. Then your citizens are happier, they get upgraded and they demand more advanced goods... then you repeat this process into eternity ...
nothing like homm at all ... imho

kind of similar from the sound of it just no combat being the main difference, i'll have to check it out once the iso demo arrives either way and realtime instead of turn based.

Well don't get fooled, there is combat, it's just RTS style ... and mostly with ships.
There are some land units, to take over islands (haven't seen any of them in the demo, but they were in the anno series b4). But since the main objective is to get goods from island A to island B ... in ships ... the main thing is making sure your ships (goods) arrive in time and in one peace ...
IMHO the only things in common with HOMM are the words: "strategy", "game" and "ubisoft" :S

Am I missing something? it seems all the 'wartime' actions that aren't related to combat are gone..the espionage, the sabotage, the propaganda..I really liked those in 1404. take an enemy down without needing to build 50 combat units.
are they still in here, and I'm missing how to find them?

Lol good to see i'm not the only one. This shit is hardcore, also to keep track about how many fabrics you need in one chain to support the other chain etc etc ffs

Keep an eye on http://www.anno2070-rechner.de
It's still in alpha though so it's not quite as good as their 1404 tool and no English translation yet.

Constantly balancing the budget, monitoring where there's over or under production, watch which consumer product starts to go down in the storehouse so I need to build more facilities, etc.
My favorite tactic was to export all production to other islands and do nothing on the main city island but build. That way I also had to monitor the load of ships and if they couldn't move all the produced goods from the islands to my city, I would need to put even more ships onto that trade lane. In later games the amount of trade traffic in my carefully built harbor was a sight to behold.

2070. Our world has changed. The rising level of the ocean has harmed the
coastal cities and climate change has made large stretches of land
inhospitable.
The latest in the award-winning strategy series, Anno 2070 offers a new
world full of challenges, where you will need to master resources,
diplomacy, and trade in the most comprehensive economic management system in
the Anno series.
Build your society of the future, colonize islands, and create sprawling
megacities with multitudes of buildings, vehicles, and resources to manage.
Engineer new production chains such as Robot Factories, Oil Refineries and
Diamond Mines and trade with a variety of goods and commodities.
* A new era
While adhering to the fundamentals that made the Anno franchise a success,
the near-future setting will bring numerous new gameplay mechanics,
architectural breakthroughs, and all new challenges. Additionally, players

seen in prior Anno games.
* Become an architect of the future
Face the current world challenges to shape the world of tomorrow. You can
either join the Tycoons to pursue an industrial and efficient course, or
